Development Of Image Processing Techniques For Core-Scale Characterization And Synthetic 3d-Printed Core Replicas, Ahmed Galal Alqassaby Almetwally Jan 2021

Development Of Image Processing Techniques For Core-Scale Characterization And Synthetic 3d-Printed Core Replicas, Ahmed Galal Alqassaby Almetwally

Theses and Dissertations

Fluid-flow physics in porous media has been continually simplified by assuming isotropic homogeneous media with minimal rock-fluid interactions. Such simplification did not reflect reality and retained the ability to understand the flow behavior essence in unconventional reservoirs. The developed physics should be reevaluated on ideal porous media, indeed, which has minimal geometrical and interaction uncertainties. Therefore, image processing techniques were utilized to processs the CT scans of core samples to construct ideal 3D-printed replicas for coreflooding experiments and simulation models. The results from both were then compared for vcalidation and cross check. Methods, Procedures, Process: Grayscale CT-scan of a Berea …

Dimensions Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Sluggish Cognitive Tempo As Predictors Of Executive Functioning, Depression, Anxiety, Substance Use, And Convergence Insufficiency, Danielle Beyer

Theses and Dissertations

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. In addition to the well-known ADHD symptom clusters, a fourth dimension has been identified as sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and describes symptoms of sluggishness, drowsiness, and daydreaming. SCT represents a unique symptom domain than cannot be accounted for by the other ADHD dimensions. The current study sought to replicate and expand upon the extant literature, hypothesizing that ADHD/SCT symptoms would significantly predict: 1a) impairment in executive functioning on a self-report measure; 1b) impairment on laboratory measures of executive functioning; 2) symptoms of depression and anxiety; …

Developing A Machine Learning Based Approach For Fractured Zone Detection By Using Petrophysical Logs, Haleh Azizi Jan 2021

Developing A Machine Learning Based Approach For Fractured Zone Detection By Using Petrophysical Logs, Haleh Azizi

Theses and Dissertations

Oil reservoirs are divided into three categories: carbonate (fractured), sandstone and unconventional reservoirs. Identification and modeling of fractures in fractured reservoirs are so important due to geomechanical issues, fluid flood simulation and enhanced oil recovery.Image and petrophysical logs are individual tools, run inside oil wells, to achieve physical characteristics of reservoirs, e.g. geological rock types, porosity, and permeability. Fractures could be distinguished using image logs because of their higher resolution. Image logs are an expensive and newly developed tool, so they have run in limited wells, whereas petrophysical logs are usually run inside the wells. Lack of image logs makes …

Sexy For Me: Enjoyment Of Sexualization, Embodiment, And Psychological Well-Being In Recreational Pole Dancers, Kelly Cuccolo

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Recreational pole dancing may have dual implications for women’s mental health. Previous research (Pellizzer, et al., 2016) conducted under the framework of Objectification Theory has reported that enjoyment of sexualization can exert negative effects on body image through self-objectification and positive effects on body image through embodiment. The purposes of this study were to a.) replicate findings from Pellizer et al., (2016) and b.) to examine the theorized outcomes of Objectification Theory not addressed by previous research (eating disorder (ED) symptomatology, depressive affect). Methods: Recreational pole dancers (N = 82) were recruited from five recreational pole dancing schools. Participants …

Systemic Veterinary Parasitcides For Residual Malaria Vector Control In Central America, Staci Michele Dreyer Jan 2021

Systemic Veterinary Parasitcides For Residual Malaria Vector Control In Central America, Staci Michele Dreyer

Theses and Dissertations

Malaria continues to be one of the most severe public health concerns worldwide. The malaria parasite, Plasmodium, is transmitted from person to person through the mosquito vector Anopheles. Vector control is a crucial element of anti-malarial campaigns and works best when there is thorough knowledge about an Anopheles vector’s biology and behavior in a given region. To fully eradicate malaria, new vector control strategies must be developed that exploit the behaviors of different vector species. One promising strategy to target vectors that primarily bite outdoors and display generalist feeding behaviors (zoophagic) is the use of veterinary systemic parasiticides. Veterinary parasiticides …

Modulation Of The Hyperfine Coupling In A Tbpc2 Single-Molecule Magnet With Electric Fields, David Fehr Jan 2021

Modulation Of The Hyperfine Coupling In A Tbpc2 Single-Molecule Magnet With Electric Fields, David Fehr

Theses and Dissertations

In theory, a quantum computer can do everything a classical computer can do, and more. This is possible because of the principal difference between their respective fundamental units of computation. Classical computers use bits that can take on values of 0 or 1, but quantum computers use quantum bits, called qubits, that can take on values of 0, 1, or any combination of 0 and 1 by exploiting the rules of quantum mechanics. However, this quantum nature is extremely fragile and therefore it is imperative that qubits are protected from their environment. Conversely, qubits cannot be so isolated that their …

Impacts Of Vertical Grid Resolution On The Representation Of A Convective Environment, Caitlyn Mensch Jan 2021

Impacts Of Vertical Grid Resolution On The Representation Of A Convective Environment, Caitlyn Mensch

Theses and Dissertations

In a pre-convective environment, modeled atmospheric conditions can be presented as discrete parameters, which serve as valuable resources both in forecasting potential severe weather events and also in assessing changes in convective potential over time. However, the value of these parameters may depend on the vertical resolution of the simulation that is used to do the calculation. Upper-air radiosonde sounding data from various research campaigns (e.g., PECAN, DC3, TRMM-LBA, etc.) in both midlatitude and tropical convective regimes are analyzed and later interpolated to the pressure levels in a range of atmospheric reanalysis and operational models. Indices such as CAPE, CIN, …

Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb Jan 2021

Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb

Theses and Dissertations

Asteroid astrometry can provide precise information on an object’s orbital position and motion, while lightcurve photometry can help determine its rotational spin rate, its shape, and the possible presence of a binary satellite object in orbit around it.

This thesis therefore reports the astrometric and photometric study of three near-Earth objects (NEOs): 68347 (2001 KB67), 494999 (2010 JU39), and 455432 (2003 RP8). Because NEOs represent a record of the early solar system, serve as possible sources for minable material, and sometimes present an impact hazard to the planet Earth, the study of these asteroids is important for understanding their orbital …

By A Thread: Adapting And Understanding The Literary Past Through Contemporary Costume, Sherry Bollero Jan 2021

By A Thread: Adapting And Understanding The Literary Past Through Contemporary Costume, Sherry Bollero

Theses and Dissertations

For over four hundred years, Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted from text to the visual realizations on the stage and later the screen. Scholarship has attended to the playscript and the performance, but it has largely neglected the position of the costume as a bridge between the literary past and contemporary adaptation. This project contends that costumes as adaptations themselves play a significant role in contemporary constructions of the literary past. In particular, the project attends to the contribution of costumes in the visualization of Shakespeare’s histories on screen. To explore this topic, the project considers several aspects. Specifically, the …

Narratological Limitations Of Telling Trauma: A Case Study Of Lorena Bobbitt And Sexual Assault, Brittney Christy Jan 2021

Narratological Limitations Of Telling Trauma: A Case Study Of Lorena Bobbitt And Sexual Assault, Brittney Christy

Theses and Dissertations

There are many barriers that women face when they tell their stories of sexual assault, namely—that they will not be believed. A number of factors hinder believability, many of them related to the broader relationship that narrative plays in our lives. Narrative expectation, cultivated by the texts we consume, shapes what we find believable or “tellable” in the words of scholar Amy Shuman. Difficult narratives are often rendered “untellable” because they contain unfamiliar patterns or because they fall outside recognizable frameworks of understanding. Sexual assault narratives are rendered untellable for many reasons, including social misunderstanding of the problem and the …

Decentering From Distress In The Moment: A Brief Randomized Control Trial, Sheila Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

The utility of mindfulness techniques to regulate emotions and enhance distress tolerance is an area of expanding research interest. Decentering, a mindfulness mechanism believed to exert therapeutic influence, is the realization that thoughts, feelings, and reactions are transitory patterns of mental activity. Existing research indicates that decentering may occur through brief mindfulness interventions. Most studies concerning brief mindfulness induce a state of mindfulness prior to a task to examine its influence on dependent variables, such as cognitive or emotional outcomes after mindfulness. This study is novel and fills a gap in the literature regarding the utility of inducing state mindfulness …

Numerical Investigation Of Aerodynamic Effects On Ash Impaction And Outside Ash Deposition Rates During Second Generation Atmospheric Pressure Oxy-Coal Combustion, Monika Kuznia

Theses and Dissertations

Oxy-combustion is one of the most competitive technologies for retrofitting existing pulverized coal-fired power plants to facilitate carbon capture and sequestration processes to reduce fossil fuel-derived carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. However, one of the obstacles hindering the widespread commercialization of this technology is the need to recirculate large volumes of flue gas to the boiler. Second generation atmospheric pressure oxy-combustion technologies have been developed to reduce the volume of recirculated flue gas by using high oxygen concentrations in the inlet oxidizer streams. However, recent experiments have shown that an increased ash deposition propensity is associated with these oxygen-enriched …

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of 7.2× 6.1× 7.0 m3. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV/c to 7 GeV/c. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the …
