Assessment Of The United States National Security Space Management And Organization, Charles G. Simpson May 2015

Assessment Of The United States National Security Space Management And Organization, Charles G. Simpson

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzes the results of the Report of the Commission to Assess the United States National Security Space Management and Organization, dated January 11, 2001 in order to determine which recommendations were beneficial, which recommendations are still in effect and what additional measures should be undertaken to continue, and even advance, our standing as a premier space power. It analyzes the potential managerial and organizational shortcomings of National Security Space within the United States Government, specifically the Department of Defense. Additionally, this paper reviews the various management and organizational force restructuring which occurred as a result of the commission’s …

Literature Review For Outpatient Ostomy Clinic, Lisa Drury May 2015

Literature Review For Outpatient Ostomy Clinic, Lisa Drury

Theses and Dissertations

A literature review was conducted regarding the importance of outpatient ostomy clinics for new ostomates. Currently, in the rural setting the author is employed at, there is inpatient care available for ostomates; once the patient is discharged from the inpatient setting, access to outpatient ostomy care is limited.

Using CINAHL and SCOPUS data bases; it was noted that there was very little research conducted on outpatient ostomy clinics for the period of2009 to present. From the journal articles utilized for this paper, follow up outpatient ostomy care by a Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN) and education for the ostomate, caregivers …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Vs Antidepressant Medications In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, David Ogato May 2015

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Vs Antidepressant Medications In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, David Ogato

Theses and Dissertations

Depression is a common and debilitating mental illness in the U.S. It affects a great number of people and yet often it goes undiagnosed and undertreated. Older adults are especially under-diagnosed because of different presentation in symptoms and increased commodities. Mark, a 55 year old male patient presented with fatigue at the clinic. Fatigue can be a symptom of many conditions. Labs were unremarkable and there were no physical examination findings indicating depression. Patient did not report complete depressive symptoms until PHQ-9 was employed. He was diagnosed with moderate depression, opted for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) over antidepressant medications (ADMs). …

Increasing Palliative Care Referrals In Terminal Lung Cancer Patients, John Edward Roll May 2015

Increasing Palliative Care Referrals In Terminal Lung Cancer Patients, John Edward Roll

Theses and Dissertations

Late referrals to palliative care services for patients suffering from terminal lung cancer is an ongoing problem that unnecessarily shortens patient survival time by inadequate and poorly timed symptom control that affects the remaining quality of life for both patient and family. The latest mortality figures available (2011) showed approximately 157,000 people died due to cancer of the lung, trachea, and bronchus (CDC, 2014a). The purpose of this independent study was to review and effectively analyze the literature and understand the reasons and barriers to early referral of palliative care services by health care providers for their clients diagnosed with …

Lung-targeting drugs are thought to be potential therapies of refractory lung diseases by maximizing local drug concentrations in the lung to avoid systemic circulation. However, a major limitation in developing lung-targeted drugs is the acquirement of lung-specific ligands. Pulmonary surfactant protein A (SPA) is predominantly synthesized by type II alveolar epithelial cells, and may serve as a potential lung-targeting ligand. Here, we generated recombinant rat pulmonary SPA (rSPA) as an antigen and immunized an alpaca to produce two nanobodies (the smallest naturally occurring antibodies) specific for rSPA, designated Nb6 and Nb17. To assess these nanobodies' potential for lung targeting, we …

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley Apr 2015

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley

Theses and Dissertations

The need for health literate communication is evident in a changing and complex health care system. Yet, little formal training is available for nurses, physicians, and other health clinicians. Poor communication in the healthcare setting has negative effects on the patient, on the clinician, the health system and the larger community. This literature review identified techniques evident in the literature to produce positive patient and clinician health and communication outcomes. Supported interventions include communication techniques such as motivational interviewing, teach-back, teach-to-goal, the Four Habits Model and the Ask Me 3 model. The impact of such interventions can be measured through …

Resurgence Of Measles In The U.S. Despite A Preventable Vaccine And School Entity, Tamara Troutman Apr 2015

Resurgence Of Measles In The U.S. Despite A Preventable Vaccine And School Entity, Tamara Troutman

Theses and Dissertations

Measles, a vaccine preventable, highly contagious infectious disease was once considered eradicated from the U.S. (Kutty et al., 2014). However measles outbreaks have recently reoccurred in the U.S. even despite the preventable vaccine and school entry laws. As evidenced by research, non-medical exemptions coupled with measles endemics worldwide have contributed to the recent U.S. measles outbreaks (Gustanaduy et al., 2014; Wang, Clymer, Davis Hayes, & Buttenheim, 2014; and World Health Organization, 2015). Even though compulsory vaccination may seem like an answer to decrease non-medical exemptions research has shown it could do more harm than good (Elliman & Bedford, 2013; Doshi …

Vaccinations: Home School Children's Effects On The Community, Kristy E. Peterfeso

Theses and Dissertations

Measles, a word that seemed to be obsolete, has now made a comeback recently in the news with the increase in outbreaks that are becoming apparent in communities throughout the United States. The definition of measles according to Frank Domino MD, editor of The Five Minute Clinical Consult Standard of 2015, is a "highly communicable acute viral illness that is characterized by a maculopapular rash and the classic triad of cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis" (Domino, 2015, p.742). Many individuals in today's society are choosing to not vaccinate their children for religious or their own personal reasons. Schools still require vaccinations …

Ongoing and near-future imaging-based dark energy experiments are critically dependent upon photometric redshifts (a.k.a. photo-z’s): i.e., estimates of the redshifts of objects based only on flux information obtained through broad filters. Higher-quality, lower-scatter photo-z’s will result in smaller random errors on cosmological parameters; while systematic errors in photometric redshift estimates, if not constrained, may dominate all other uncertainties from these experiments. The desired optimization and calibration is dependent upon spectroscopic measurements for secure redshift information; this is the key application of galaxy spectroscopy for imaging-based dark energy experiments.

Hence, to achieve their full potential, imaging-based experiments …
