Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Purpose
Plain radiographic evaluation of acute shoulder trauma in adults requires a minimum of two projections, commonly the anteroposterior (AP) and lateral scapular projections, with additional projections taken for diagnosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether the addition of the apical oblique (AO) projection to the AP and lateral scapular projections increases the number and/or alters the types of abnormalities detected in the examination of acute shoulder trauma.
Methods
Examinations of 56 adults who had undergone three-projection (AP, lateral scapular, AO) radiographic shoulder examination for acute trauma were allocated into two-projection (AP, lateral scapular) and three-projection …

Growth factors can be isolated from bovine milk to form a whey growth factor extract (WGFE). This study examined whether WGFE promoted activation of the AKT/mTOR pathway enabling increased lean tissue mass and strength in resistance trained men. Forty six men with >6 months of resistance training (RT) experience performed 12 weeks of RT. Participants consumed 20 g/day of whey protein and were randomised to receive either 1.6 g WGFE/day (WGFE; n = 22) or 1.6 g cellulose/day (control, CONT; n = 24). The primary outcome was leg press one-repetition maximum (LP1-RM) which was assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 …

Barefoot Versus Shod Training: Effects On Navicular Drop And Foot Pressure Analysis, Evan Condry, Daniel Himmerick, Tiffany Vanhaaften
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose: Running is a popular form of exercise around the world. The running population generally runs in a rear-foot strike pattern (RFSP), yet there is questioning on the possible benefits of running in a forefoot strike pattern (FFSP). The main goal of FFSP is the possible reduction of running related injuries by reducing the stress on the medial longitudinal arch. The purpose of this research study is to determine if a barefoot running retraining program will have an effect on navicular drop height, plantar pressure area, and peak plantar pressure of the medial aspect of the foot.

Recent advancements in extraction technologies have resulted in rapid increases of gas and oil development across the United States and specifically in western North Dakota. This expansion of energy development has unknown influences on local wildlife populations and the ecological interactions within and among species. Our objectives for this study were to evaluate nest success and nest predator dynamics of sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) in two study sites that represented areas of high and low energy development intensities in North Dakota. During the summers of 2012 and 2013, we monitored 163 grouse nests using radio telemetry. Of these, …

Are Firearms Causing An Increase In Gun Crimes? A Granger Causality Test Of Dallas' Street Gun Arsenal, Dustin Dean Thompson
Are Firearms Causing An Increase In Gun Crimes? A Granger Causality Test Of Dallas' Street Gun Arsenal, Dustin Dean Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
From 1980 to 1992, Dallas, Texas saw an increase in both gun violence and the number of firearms. Nine firearm measures that define Dallas, Texas’ street gun arsenal along with two gun violence measures are used to test whether firearms are causing an increase in gun violence or gun violence is causing an increase in firearms. By estimating vector autoregressions and employing Granger causality tests on one firearm measure and one gun violence measure, the result is that the rising number of homicides committed with a gun are causing an increase in the total number of firearms. There is little …
Oil Extraction Infrastructure Development And Resulting Land-Cover Change In Mckenzie County, North Dakota, 2009 To 2014, Eric Torgerson
Oil Extraction Infrastructure Development And Resulting Land-Cover Change In Mckenzie County, North Dakota, 2009 To 2014, Eric Torgerson
Theses and Dissertations
Improved techniques and methods in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing have allowed once inaccessible resources to become profitably accessible in the Bakken Region of North Dakota (Fershee 2011). This recent development has been rapid, and associated land-cover change can be described as spatially extensive (Baker et al. 2012). After an extensive literature review and to the best of my knowledge, little research has been conducted in the Bakken Region regarding land-cover change associated with oil development. Using high-spatial-resolution, four-band imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) in conjunction with Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) techniques, it is possible to …
Transit Photometry Of Recently Discovered Hot Jupiters, Sean Peter Mccloat
Transit Photometry Of Recently Discovered Hot Jupiters, Sean Peter Mccloat
Theses and Dissertations
The University of North Dakota Space Studies Internet Observatory was used to observe the transits of hot Jupiter exoplanets. Targets for this research were selected from the list of currently confirmed exoplanets using the following criteria: radius > 0.5 Rjup, discovered since 2011, orbiting stars with apparent magnitude > 13. Eleven transits were observed distributed across nine targets with the goal of performing differential photometry for parameter refinement and transit timing variation analysis if data quality allowed. Data quality was ultimately insufficient for robust parameter refinement, but tentative calculations of mid-transit times were made of three of the observed transits. Mid-transit times …

Enhanced Optical Wireless Channel For Indoor And Intravehicle Communications: Power Distribution And Signal To Noise Ratio Analysis, Rana Rageh Shaaban
Theses and Dissertations
Visible light communication—(VLC) provides wide bandwidth and high security
capabilities for free space optical communication. This thesis presents the key concepts,
underlying principles and practical applications of visible light communications. In
particular, this thesis focuses on the received power distribution pattern and signal to noise
ratio for line-of-sight indoor and vehicular applications. Several methods are used to
modify the SNR and power distribution levels. It is shown that in the absence of
obstruction, the optical footprint is nearly circular and offers a platform for large- scale
deployment in commercial environments, which is similar to micro and Pico cells.

Testing Theoretical Models Of Binge Eating: An Examination Of Escape Theory And Affect Regulation Model, Terra Lee Towne
Theses and Dissertations
The present study tested two theoretical models of binge eating (i.e., escape theory and the affect regulation model of binge eating) by combining an experimental design with ecological momentary assessment. After undergoing a negative affect induction, 139 participants, all of whom were current binge eaters, were instructed to eat a pint of ice cream (binge eating condition) or to eat as much as they would during a typical snack (control condition). Participants assigned to the binge eating condition ate either with (binge eating + self-awareness condition) or without (binge eating condition) a visible video camera pointed in their direction. Participants …

Female Veterans And Homelessness: A Resource Guide For Occupational Therapists, Jamie Schacht, Alison Tonsager
Female Veterans And Homelessness: A Resource Guide For Occupational Therapists, Jamie Schacht, Alison Tonsager
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Female veterans are the fastest growing subpopulation among the homeless population in the United States (U.S.) (Boothe, 2017). Female veterans report lack of access to gender-specific programs and therapy groups within the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to meet specific needs post-deployment (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2015b). Difficulty with reintegration post-deployment has been linked with homelessness among female veterans. There is evidence to support female veterans' over-representation in the homeless population is due to a higher prevalence of risk factors for homelessness as compared to male veterans and females within the general population (Byrne, Montgomery, & Dichter, …
