The Long-Term Significance Of Working As An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, Christopher J. Felege Jan 2018

The Long-Term Significance Of Working As An Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, Christopher J. Felege

Theses and Dissertations

The use of undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs) has increased in recent years at a number of institutions, especially in active-learning and high-enrollment introductory courses. Currently, there is research demonstrating their benefit to students, and the short-term impacts of the experience on the UTAs. However, no study to date has investigated the long-term impacts of the UTA experience on the participants themselves, and a number of studies call for such an investigation. This dissertation sought to fill that gap in understanding by utilizing a Grounded Theory approach to investigate the perceptions of participants who had served as an UTA in the …

Removal Of Emerging Poly- And Per-Fluoroalkyl Substances By Water Treatment, Ryan Alexander Hanson Jan 2018

Removal Of Emerging Poly- And Per-Fluoroalkyl Substances By Water Treatment, Ryan Alexander Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (per- and poly-PFASs) are emerging contaminants that have raised great concern in recent years. Two anionic per-PFASs in particular, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), has received worldwide attention for their persistence in the natural environment, resistance to typical environmental degradation, bioaccumulation potential, and adverse health effects in humans. The stable chemical characteristics have enabled these chemicals to be used in many industrial and consumer products over the past 50 years. They have been detected all over the world in various environmental matrices.

The water treatment removal of per-PFASs has been well documented, but the full …

Conduct Unbecoming A Christian Missionary: Aaron Mcgaffey Beede's Work On North Dakota's Standing Rock Reservation, 1901-1916, Sonja Natalie Hathaway

Theses and Dissertations

Research for this dissertation focused on a close reading of Aaron McGaffey Beede’s journals, letters, and publications. Contemporary sources were used to compare or explain ideas and actions. Rather than an exhaustive treatment of secondary sources, the dissertation uses a broad sampling of topics and sources in an attempt to pull together many of the disparate threads that provide the context for Beede’s thoughts and actions.

This dissertation began as a study and explanation of the work and legacy of the Episcopal missionary Aaron McGaffey Beede, particularly his work in preserving Indian customs, traditions, and stories. Understanding Beede and his …

Examining The Relationship Between Technology Usage And Objective Assessments Of Impulsivity And Cognitive Performance In Young Adults, Sheryl Holter Vogel Jan 2018

Examining The Relationship Between Technology Usage And Objective Assessments Of Impulsivity And Cognitive Performance In Young Adults, Sheryl Holter Vogel

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined objective measurements of cognitive performance in tasks a clinician may use when evaluating an adult for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to determine if the cell phone behavior and self-reported text-message dependency and social media use accounted for the variance in scores. Seventy-four participants were included. in stepwise multiple regression analyses. Independent sample t-tests found age of first cell phone was significantly higher for men than women and reported significantly decreased sense of control over their social media use. Reported number of texting behavior (i.e. daily number of texts sent, received, and checked) were positively correlated …

The Fiscal Adjustment Within Public Higher Education: How 2 Year And 4 Year Public Institutions Achieve Long-Run Budget Equilibrium, Ryan Jockers Jan 2018

The Fiscal Adjustment Within Public Higher Education: How 2 Year And 4 Year Public Institutions Achieve Long-Run Budget Equilibrium, Ryan Jockers

Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyzes the fiscal adjustment of both 2-Year colleges, and 4-Year research institutions and finds very different behavior that has implications for market power and returns to scale within their operations. The 4-Year research institutions have greater stability, show evidence of constant returns to scale, and are able to maintain enrollment levels even when tuition prices increase. Further, they take advantage of the diverse revenue streams available to them due to the nature of their operation. Conversely, the 2-Year colleges have less stability and fewer revenue sources, exhibit behaviors of increasing returns to scale, and are not able to …

Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak Jan 2018

Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak

Theses and Dissertations

This work details the development of the Critical Phase Analysis Tool (CPAT), a tool for analyzing and grading the quality of approach and landing phases of flight for the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID). General Aviation (GA) accounts for the highest accident rates in Civil Aviation, and the approach and landing phases are when a majority of these accidents occur. Since GA aircraft typically lack most of the sophisticated technology that exists within Commercial Aviation, detecting phases of flight can be difficult. Moreover, because of the high variability in GA operations and abilities of the pilot, detecting unsafe …

Exploring Star Formation In Cluster Galaxies, Sandanuwan Prasadh Kalawila Vithanage Jan 2018

Exploring Star Formation In Cluster Galaxies, Sandanuwan Prasadh Kalawila Vithanage

Theses and Dissertations

Galaxy clusters are the most dense virialized environments in the known Universe. Hence they are the best locations to study the effect of the high-density environment on the evolution of galaxies. The intracluster medium (ICM) plays an important role in galaxy evolution. The goal of this dissertation is to study the effect of the ICM on galaxy evolution using star formation. A sample of 10 galaxy clusters were observed through the $r$-band and redshifted $H\alpha$ narrow-band filters using the Mayall 4-m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Continuum image subtraction was used to measure H$\alpha$ flux to quantify star …

An Investigation Of Severe Weather Environments In Atmospheric Reanalyses, Austin Taylor King Jan 2018

An Investigation Of Severe Weather Environments In Atmospheric Reanalyses, Austin Taylor King

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis performs an intercomparison of reanalysis datasets with the goal of determining their respective proficiency in representing severe weather environments capable of producing phenomena such as strong wind, large hail, and tornadoes. A select reanalyses is then used to investigate the climatology and trends in pertinent severe weather parameters over a three-decade period from 1986-2015.

The intercomparison is performed by comparing a peer-reviewed dataset of Rapid Update Cycle 2 (RUC-2) proximity soundings to collocated soundings derived from the nearest grid point in six different modern reanalyses. These soundings are compared via various parameters related to severe weather such as: …

A Study Of 15-Year Aerosol Optical Thickness And Direct Shortwave Aerosol Radiative Effect Trends Using Modis, Misr, Caliop And Ceres, Ricardo Alfaro-Contreras, Jianglong Zhang, Jeffrey S. Reid, Sundar Christopher

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

By combining Collection 6 Moderate Resolution and Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Version 22 Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aerosol products with Cloud and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) flux products, the aerosol optical thickness (AOT, at 0.55 µm) and shortwave (SW) aerosol radiative effect (SWARE) trends are studied over ocean for the near-full Terra (2000–2015) and Aqua (2002–2015) data records. Despite differences in sampling methods, regional SWARE and AOT trends are highly correlated with one another. Over global oceans, weak SWARE (cloud-free SW flux) and AOT trends of 0.5–0.6 Wm−2 (−0.5 to −0.6 Wm−2 ) and 0.002 AOT decade−1 are found …

A Bidirectional Subsurface Remote Sensing Reflectance Model Explicitly Accounting For Particle Backscattering Shapes, Shuangyan He, Xiaodong Zhang, Yuanheng Xiong, Deric Grey Nov 2017

A Bidirectional Subsurface Remote Sensing Reflectance Model Explicitly Accounting For Particle Backscattering Shapes, Shuangyan He, Xiaodong Zhang, Yuanheng Xiong, Deric Grey

Earth System Science and Policy Faculty Publications

The subsurface remote sensing reflectance (rrs, sr−1), particularly its bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), depends fundamentally on the angular shape of the volume scattering functions (VSFs, m−1 sr−1). Recent technological advancement has greatly expanded the collection, and the knowledge of natural variability, of the VSFs of oceanic particles. This allows us to test the Zaneveld's theoretical rrs model that explicitly accounts for particle VSF shapes. We parameterized the rrs model based on HydroLight simulations using 114 VSFs measured in three coastal waters around the United States and in oceanic waters of North Atlantic Ocean. With the absorption coefficient …

Application Of P300 Event-Related Potential In Brain-Computer Interface, Ali Raider, Reza Fazel-Rezai Nov 2017

Application Of P300 Event-Related Potential In Brain-Computer Interface, Ali Raider, Reza Fazel-Rezai

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate one of the applications of P300 event-related potential (ERP), i.e., brain-computer interface (BCI). Researchers and students will find the chapter appealing with a preliminary description of P300 ERP. This chapter also appreciates the importance and advantages of noninvasive ERP technique. In noninvasive BCI, the P300 ERPs are extracted from brain electrical activities [electroencephalogram (EEG)] as a signature of the underlying electrophysiological mechanism of brain responses to the external or internal changes and events. As the chapter proceeds, topics are covered on more relevant scholarly works about challenges and new directions in …
