The Relationship Of The Self-Concept And The Reflected Ideal Self To Various Components Of Friendship, Dennis L. Johnson
The Relationship Of The Self-Concept And The Reflected Ideal Self To Various Components Of Friendship, Dennis L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation was designed to examine some of the rela tionships between self-concepts, evaluations by others, and friendship. It was hypothesized that a person who is seen by a second person similarly to the way the first person would like to see himself will be more likely to form friendships with the second person, and more likely to see him as ego supportive than when such similarity does not exist. It was also predicted that people who see themselves as being quite different from the way they would like to be (unfavorable self-concepts) will be more likely to be involved …

A Multidimensional Scaling Approach To Interperson Similarity And Attraction, Brenda Gryting Heltne
A Multidimensional Scaling Approach To Interperson Similarity And Attraction, Brenda Gryting Heltne
Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this investigation was to determine what judgment strategies are actually employed when judging the similarity of individuals, and the relationship of similarity estimates to a rated attraction index. The Stone-Coles (1970) multidimensional scaling technique was utilized. The input was based on the estimates of interperson similarity made by 16 pledges of a sorority. Each pledge also ranked the attractiveness of the other 15 pledges.
The four factor-dimensions which emerged from the judgmental data, similarity estimates, were interpreted as "dating conservatism-liberalism," "sociability," "non-dependability-dependability," and "dominance-submission". Only the "sociability" and "dominance-submission" dimensions were found to be linearly related to …

Inventory Analysis: Economic Order Point And Order Quantity, Dennis G. Lardy
Inventory Analysis: Economic Order Point And Order Quantity, Dennis G. Lardy
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of inventory control and management has plagued business since its inception. It has not been until recently, however, that business has begun to deal with the problem on a scientific basis. The expansion of the firm into a large industrial complex has brought about the recognition of the need for better inventory control. This paper studies the basic mathematical models that have been developed for use in management and control of inventories. The study deals primarily with the economic order quantity and economic order point determination.
Various cost inputs and methods of determining and estimating them are discussed. …

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder
A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder
Theses and Dissertations
Piaget (1929) contends that a verbal interview is the only procedure which is flexible enough to follow and examine the development of cognitive processes in children. However verbal methods are inconsistent with the suggestion by Piaget (1951, 1963) and several colleagues (Furth, 1964, 1966; Sinclair-de-Zwart, 1969) that language merely reflects underlying cognitive processes, and is not a source of logical development. In addition verbal methods allow for verbal misunderstandings by both subjects and experimenters, provide for experimenter bias and may foster response sets.
To minimize these theoretical and methodological difficulties, several investigations (e.g., Braine, 1959, 1962; Sawda & Nelson, 1968) …

Numerical Control: A Decision Model For Small Manufacturer Guidance, Donald Homrighausen
Numerical Control: A Decision Model For Small Manufacturer Guidance, Donald Homrighausen
Theses and Dissertations
Much has been written about numerical control (N/C) and its various benefits and limitations, but there is a definite lack of and need for a unifying decision concept, particularly one oriented to small machine shops. Numerically controlled machining operations can be a major investment for a small shop and therefore management needs good guidance for sound decision making when it comes to deciding whether or not to introduce N/C to his operations.
This study examines the various aspects of N/C and categorizes them under three general areas: (1) technical aspects, advantages and disadvantages, (2) economic aspects, and (3) intangible aspects. …

Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii
Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The Sharp-tailed Grouse has evolved a highly complex system of visual and acoustical signals due to increased social interactions necessary with the predator pressure of an exposed environment. The first portion of the spring mating season is primarily involved with establishment and defense of territories. Predominant acoustical signals are aggressive, highly ritualized, and involved in individual location and recognition. During mid-season females visit the lek, are courted by males, and copulations occur. Acoustical signals are concerned with attracting and stimulating females, vary on a time and frequency continuum, and are thus not as highly ritualized. During the last portion of …

Theses and Dissertations
Problem: The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes underlying the unsuccessful professional laboratory experiences of student teachers at Saint Cloud State College. Two problems of a specific nature were scrutinized in this study:
1. What were the reasons that made student teachers ineffective in their student teaching experiences at Satin Cloud State College, furthermore, what limitations did personality factors place on student performance?
2. Which, if any, of the selection criteria could identify the potentially unsuccessful student teachers.
Method: This investigation was primarily a study of records and evaluations of those people who were admitted to teacher …
Nationalism And Patriotic Idealism As Thematic Aspects In Art, Daniel A. Doucette
Nationalism And Patriotic Idealism As Thematic Aspects In Art, Daniel A. Doucette
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis has a two-fold purpose: (1) to provide an historical outline of the incidence of patriotic thematic material in Western art by presenting examples of works from dominant Western cultures beginning with Greece and Rome and including Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United States. Examples given are in sequence from the eleventh century to the present excluding the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries. Greek and Roman examples are from two major epochs—the Hellenistic period of Greece, 323 to 146 B.C. (Greek period of nationalism) and the period 27 to 117 A.D. in Roman history (the period in …
An Attempt To Unify Two Divergent Currents In The Art Of The Twentieth Century, Robert J. Hromyak
An Attempt To Unify Two Divergent Currents In The Art Of The Twentieth Century, Robert J. Hromyak
Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to unify the apparently conflicting themes of hard edge painting and figurative subject matter.
There are historical precidents for both styles in the twentieth century in the work of Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian on the side of abstract geometric form, and Tom Wesselmann on the side of figurative painting.
Presented as evidence of the possibilities of such an approach are ten acrylic paintings and ten serigraphs.
Task And Socioemotional Interaction As Contexts Affecting The Agreement-Attraction Relationship, William D. Wittman
Task And Socioemotional Interaction As Contexts Affecting The Agreement-Attraction Relationship, William D. Wittman
Theses and Dissertations
The majority of the research supports the hypothesis that agreement is a major variable in attraction, but several recent studies have shown other conditions may also be important. Following Wright's (1969a) friendship model, Wright and Crawford (1969) have shown that males are oriented toward both "task" and "social-emotional" situations, while females are oriented primarily toward "social- emotional" situations. The present study was designed to investigate the role of agreement within these two situational variables. It was hypothesized that, for males in a task situation, agreement would yield greater attraction than disagreement. For females, greater attraction was predicted for agreeing pairs …
