A Blackboard-Style Decision-Making System For Multi-Tier Craft Control And Its Evaluation, Jeremy Straub, Hassan Reza Apr 2015

A Blackboard-Style Decision-Making System For Multi-Tier Craft Control And Its Evaluation, Jeremy Straub, Hassan Reza

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This article presents an approach for decision-making in support of the control of an autonomous system of multiple tiers of robots (e.g., satellite, aerial and ground) based on the Blackboard architectural style. Under the proposed approach, the system evaluates prospective approaches for goal satisfaction (identified by user selected final rules), identifies the lowest-cost solution and determines the best path to achieving the goal, via the analysis of the Blackboard rule and action set. Two different approaches to this rule and action path generation are discussed. This article presents the proposed Blackboard-style architecture for autonomous multi-tier control and describes its implementation. …

Vaccinations: Home School Children's Effects On The Community, Kristy E. Peterfeso Apr 2015

Vaccinations: Home School Children's Effects On The Community, Kristy E. Peterfeso

Theses and Dissertations

Measles, a word that seemed to be obsolete, has now made a comeback recently in the news with the increase in outbreaks that are becoming apparent in communities throughout the United States. The definition of measles according to Frank Domino MD, editor of The Five Minute Clinical Consult Standard of 2015, is a "highly communicable acute viral illness that is characterized by a maculopapular rash and the classic triad of cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis" (Domino, 2015, p.742). Many individuals in today's society are choosing to not vaccinate their children for religious or their own personal reasons. Schools still require vaccinations …

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary P. Waller Apr 2015

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary P. Waller

Aviation Faculty Publications

Efforts to quantify personality characteristics in the pilots of manned aircraft extend back for decades. For individuals interested in piloting Unmanned Aircraft, similar analysis of normative personality characteristics remains relatively unexplored. This research examined the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality profiles of individuals pursuing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) studies at the University of North Dakota (UND). Using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) general personality index, the responses of a UAS Student sample (n=65) were compared to a Normative sample (n=248) previously collected by Petros (2013). The sample group, comprised of students with either Pre UAS Operations or UAS Operations declared …

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley Apr 2015

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley

Theses and Dissertations

The need for health literate communication is evident in a changing and complex health care system. Yet, little formal training is available for nurses, physicians, and other health clinicians. Poor communication in the healthcare setting has negative effects on the patient, on the clinician, the health system and the larger community. This literature review identified techniques evident in the literature to produce positive patient and clinician health and communication outcomes. Supported interventions include communication techniques such as motivational interviewing, teach-back, teach-to-goal, the Four Habits Model and the Ask Me 3 model. The impact of such interventions can be measured through …

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring Apr 2015

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have shown that any amount of breastfeeding decreases a child's risk of otitis media, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes . Breastfeeding for one month or more decreases the risk of SIDS; two months or more decreases the risk of celiac disease; and breastfeeding for more than three months decreases the risk of type 1 diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and asthma. The benefits continue to grow if a child is breastfed more than six months (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012) .

Even though the benefits of breastfeeding are well documented, low-income women are still less likely …

Resurgence Of Measles In The U.S. Despite A Preventable Vaccine And School Entity, Tamara Troutman Apr 2015

Resurgence Of Measles In The U.S. Despite A Preventable Vaccine And School Entity, Tamara Troutman

Theses and Dissertations

Measles, a vaccine preventable, highly contagious infectious disease was once considered eradicated from the U.S. (Kutty et al., 2014). However measles outbreaks have recently reoccurred in the U.S. even despite the preventable vaccine and school entry laws. As evidenced by research, non-medical exemptions coupled with measles endemics worldwide have contributed to the recent U.S. measles outbreaks (Gustanaduy et al., 2014; Wang, Clymer, Davis Hayes, & Buttenheim, 2014; and World Health Organization, 2015). Even though compulsory vaccination may seem like an answer to decrease non-medical exemptions research has shown it could do more harm than good (Elliman & Bedford, 2013; Doshi …

Students' Emotions For Achievement And Technology Use In Synchronous Hybrid Graduate Programmes: A Control-Value Approach, Nikolaus T. Butz, Robert H. Stupnisky, Reinhard Pekrun Mar 2015

Students' Emotions For Achievement And Technology Use In Synchronous Hybrid Graduate Programmes: A Control-Value Approach, Nikolaus T. Butz, Robert H. Stupnisky, Reinhard Pekrun

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Synchronous hybrid delivery (simultaneously teaching on-campus and online students using web conferencing) is becoming more common; however, little is known about how students experience emotions in this learning environment. Based on Pekrun’s (2006) control-value theory of emotions, the dual purpose of this study was first to compare synchronous hybrid students who attend online versus on-campus in terms of control, value, emotions and perceived success and second to compare students’ degree of emotional activation in the domains of programme achievement and technology use. Survey data from 101 graduate business students revealed that online students reported significantly higher levels of technology-related anger, …

Generalized Trust And Diversity In The Classroom: A Longitudinal Study Of Romanian Adolescents, Gabriel Bădescu, Paul E. Sum Mar 2015

Generalized Trust And Diversity In The Classroom: A Longitudinal Study Of Romanian Adolescents, Gabriel Bădescu, Paul E. Sum

Political Science & Public Administration Faculty Publications

Generalized trust, the faith we place in strangers, is a fundamental attribute of democratic societies. We investigate the development of generalized trust using data collected from Romanian high school students within a multi-level, panel research design. We find that diversity in the classroom, defined through ethnic and socio-economic differences, has negative effects on generalized trust. Associational membership interacts indirectly with diversity, counteracting the negative impact of ethnic diversity but reinforcing socio-economic distinctions. The findings support cultural theories of generalized trust and point to the potentially positive role educational policy might play in encouraging trust among youths.
