Persistence At A Tribal University: Factors Associated With Second Year Enrollment, Thomas C. Motl, Karen D. Multon, Fei Zhao

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Participants include 89 college students from a tribal university in the Midwestern United States. A survey regarding attitudes and adjustment to campus was administered to all students during their first semester of college. Variables assessed included psychosociocultural integration factors, such as educational goals, trust of others at college, longing for home, school pride, and fair treatment from others (Motl et al., 2009). Objective variables indicating level of academic preparation for college (high school GPA, ACT scores, and class percentile), academic integration (college GPAs), and persistence (2nd-year enrollment status) were gathered from the university. Using logistic regression procedures, a model was …

Using Self-Study As A Process For Teacher Inquiry Into Classroom Diversity, Aimee Rogers, Lisa Ortmann Jan 2018

Using Self-Study As A Process For Teacher Inquiry Into Classroom Diversity, Aimee Rogers, Lisa Ortmann

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Educators in our region of the country likely agree that although there is growing diversity in our public schools in terms of culture, race, ethnicity, gender-identification, primary language and other aspects of diversity, the diversity of practicing and developing teachers has remained relatively unchanged. According to a national report, 82% of all undergraduate degrees in education across the country were awarded to white students in 2009-10, three-quarters of whom were women (AACTE, 2013). In our region of the upper midwest, the statistics are closer to 96% white and 73% female (North Dakota State University, 2017). Although as a teacher workforce, …

The Co-Treatment Of Physical Therapy And Music Therapy And Its Effect On Parkinson's Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Kayli Muckenhirn, Laura Whiteley Jan 2018

The Co-Treatment Of Physical Therapy And Music Therapy And Its Effect On Parkinson's Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Kayli Muckenhirn, Laura Whiteley

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background. A multidisciplinary approach combining physical therapy and music therapy can improve functional mobility in individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Objective. The authors studied whether a multidisciplinary approach of PT and MT would reduce the primary symptoms associated with PD.

Methods. In a single subject design, one patient participated in the following interventions; seated activities, task-specific training, balance and posture, pre-gait activities, and gait activities. The patient was evaluated on the first, mid-term, and last days of treatment. Evaluations included the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39), Freezing of Gait Questionnaire (FOGQ), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG), Five Times …

Emg Analysis Of Latissimus Dorsi, Erector Spinae, And Middle Trapezius Muscle Activity During Spinal Rotation: A Pilot Study, Hunter Huberty, Jacob Klingbeil, Michael Miller, Michael Utt Jan 2018

Emg Analysis Of Latissimus Dorsi, Erector Spinae, And Middle Trapezius Muscle Activity During Spinal Rotation: A Pilot Study, Hunter Huberty, Jacob Klingbeil, Michael Miller, Michael Utt

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Purpose/Hypothesis: Rotation of the spine is a common movement used for completing daily activities and participating in sports. As a contributing factor to back injuries, the performance of spine rotation is an important consideration for the rehabilitation and prevention of future back injury. Muscles involved in spine rotation have been researched, though limited findings exist for one of the largest back muscles: Latissimus Dorsi (LD). The LD muscle contributes to many movements of the trunk and limbs given its multiple attachment sites including the pelvis, scapula, ribs and humerus. Influence of the LD on spine rotation, however, has not …

Hybrid Inductive Power Transfer And Wireless Antenna System For Biomedical Implanted Devices, Reem Shadid, Mohammad Haerinia, Sayan Roy, Sima Noghanian Jan 2018

Hybrid Inductive Power Transfer And Wireless Antenna System For Biomedical Implanted Devices, Reem Shadid, Mohammad Haerinia, Sayan Roy, Sima Noghanian

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a hybrid system consisting of a novel microstrip antenna that can be designed to resonate at various frequencies within the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band (e.g., 415 MHz, 905 MHz, and 1300 MHz), combined with a pair of high frequency (HF) coils (13.56 MHz). The system is designed to be fabricated on an FR4 substrate layer, and it provides a compact solution for simultaneous wireless power transfer (WPT) and multi-band wireless communication, to be utilized in implanted medical devices. The external antenna/coil combination (EX) will be located outside the body on the skin layer. The EX …

A Guide For Occupational Therapists: Utilizing Trauma-Informed Care To Guide Intervention For Children In Foster Care, Courtney Crabill, Katie Hanson Jan 2018

A Guide For Occupational Therapists: Utilizing Trauma-Informed Care To Guide Intervention For Children In Foster Care, Courtney Crabill, Katie Hanson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of this scholarly project was to create a guide for trauma-informed interventions for occupational therapists specifically to use with foster care children. Currently, there are approximately 600,000 children living in foster care in the United States (Child Welfare League of America, 2015). Children in the foster system who have experienced or witnessed violent actions often demonstrate post-traumatic stress like symptoms and diagnoses. Often times these experiences affect their development, coping skills, emotional regulation, and relationships and attachments (Lynch et al., 2017; Deutsch et al., 2015; Heim et al., 2010). It is estimated that between 40% and 60% of …

Animal-Assisted Intervention For Healthcare Professionals: An Occupational Therapy Facilitated Program, Samantha Coyle, Caitlin Duggan Jan 2018

Animal-Assisted Intervention For Healthcare Professionals: An Occupational Therapy Facilitated Program, Samantha Coyle, Caitlin Duggan

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Introduction: This scholarly project explores literature regarding Animal-Assisted Interventions and possible impacts on healthcare professionals. Literature published within the past two decades has emphasized the various roles and benefits that the presence of animals may provide within various healthcare settings and with diverse populations. The evidence of animal-assisted interventions has been extensively researched and supported as it pertains to the client or patient involved. The problem is that no one has taken the time to evaluate the benefits that having an animal in the healthcare system may have on healthcare professionals (i.e. therapists, nurses, physicians). Due to the lack …

Occupational Therapy Practice Trends For Occupations Impacted By Puberty In Children With Asd, Sydney Larson, Kelsey Hemberger Jan 2018

Occupational Therapy Practice Trends For Occupations Impacted By Puberty In Children With Asd, Sydney Larson, Kelsey Hemberger

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Introduction: Adolescents face physical, social, cognitive, and emotional changes during the developmental stage of puberty. Pubertal changes can be difficult for neurotypical adolescents to cope with, but especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, adolescents with ASD experience challenges with adapting to physical and emotional changes, managing new hygiene routines, abiding to social norms, and inappropriate sexual behaviors (Beddows & Brooks, 2016; Cridland, Caputi, Jones, & Magee, 2015; Cridland, Jones, Caputi, & Magee, 2014). While occupational therapy plays a role in helping adolescents with ASD, a lack of occupational therapy literature on this topic leads to unknown …
