4ms Framework For Aging Healthcare, Christine Zaki Aug 2021

4ms Framework For Aging Healthcare, Christine Zaki

Nursing Capstones

Background: At the beginning of the pandemic, primary care clinics in North Dakota (ND) had just a trickle of daily telehealth encounters. Over time, these encounters increased, primarily for the youngest seniors (55 – 70 years old). Due to increased COVID-19 cases among the elderly population in ND, the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) allocated a grant to the University of North Dakota (UND) to promote telehealth use in the elderly residing in rural ND and receiving home care through the desired home care agency. This project aims to promote telehealth to reduce exposure to COVID-19 among the geriatric populations …

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4m'S, Witeh Esoe Aug 2021

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4m'S, Witeh Esoe

Nursing Capstones

COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges in accessing healthcare services. The lack of accessibility to healthcare drastically impacted older adults, especially those in rural America, who experienced multiple issues accessing quality care with an increase in healthcare cost leading to a significant increase in morbidity and mortality rate from COVID-19. Consequently, the usage of telehealth services skyrocketed during the pandemic. As a result, the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) emerged with the aim to promote the use of telehealth services to reduce COVID-19 exposure to older adults in rural North Dakota (ND). Thereby keeping older adults safe at home and still having …

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4ms, Melissa Koehl Aug 2021

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4ms, Melissa Koehl

Nursing Capstones

The current 2019 novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has presented new threats and challenges in healthcare, especially when attempting to conduct wellness exams amongst the most vulnerable. Older adults with underlying medical conditions are at great risk for exposure and infection of COVID-19. The Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) grant was given to the University of North Dakota (UND) to create a geriatric telehealth team and implement a telehealth project, promoting the use of telehealth technologies amongst older adults utilizing the 4Ms (mentation, medication, mobility, and what matters). A modified wellness assessment tool was created and administered through telehealth technology to …

An Education Intervention In Integrating The Mobile Applications In Treating Disruptive Sleep Patterns In Mental Health Patients, Agnes M. Aondo Aug 2021

An Education Intervention In Integrating The Mobile Applications In Treating Disruptive Sleep Patterns In Mental Health Patients, Agnes M. Aondo

Nursing Capstones

Background: Disruptive sleep patterns in patients with mental health disorders are a common occurrence. Unfortunately, many people are often treated for their mental health disorders solely or prescribed more medications to manage sleep, leaving sleep evaluation, and management addressed inadequately in the clinical setting. There is extensive evidence supporting the benefits of integrating mobile applications into clinical practice.

Objective: The purpose of the clinical project was to determine if an educational intervention would increase APRN’s knowledge about the mobile app in the care of mental health patients who experience disruptive sleep patterns in primary care outpatient clinics

Methodology: A one-group …

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4m'S, Janet Obonyo Aug 2021

Telehealth Assessment In The Elderly Using The 4m'S, Janet Obonyo

Nursing Capstones

COVID-19 has accelerated an already urgent need for telehealth in the United States. While health care systems have been providing telehealth for years, the number of providers and patients who need to participate in telehealth has ballooned overnight. Though telehealth has been in use for a while, the geriatric population seems to be disadvantaged, especially those who reside in rural settings. Due to increased COVID 19 cases among the elderly population in North Dakota, the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) allocated a grant to the University of North Dakota to promote telehealth in the elderly receiving homecare services in rural …

Just A Little Respect: Authority And Competency In Women's Speech, Bridget Anne Carroll Aug 2021

Just A Little Respect: Authority And Competency In Women's Speech, Bridget Anne Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

Young women have conflicting motivations directing how they use pitch, vocal fry, and uptalk intonation. High pitch and uptalk may emphasize their femininity, but low pitch and vocal fry are associated with better leadership. Thus, it is difficult to predict how young women will speak in a particular situation. This thesis measures how 16 young women used pitch, vocal fry, and uptalk in three different speech styles collected through videoconferencing calls. Surveys determined how the changes in speech affected the listener's judgments of the speaker. The lowest average pitch was in interview style speech and the largest range of pitch …

Participant Reference In Colombian Sign Language Narrative, Martha Lois Gateley Aug 2021

Participant Reference In Colombian Sign Language Narrative, Martha Lois Gateley

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the research on discourse in sign languages thus far has been carried out on American Sign Language. With this thesis, I add to the current research by comparing what is known about participant reference in American Sign Language with Colombian Sign Language.

This thesis analyzes six separate stories totaling 72 minutes, signed by 5 different native signers of Colombian Sign Language. ELAN (a computer software for annotation) was used to mark all of the referring terms in the subject position and categorize the terms by type (nominal reference, pronominal reference, zero-anaphor, and classifier) and by function (introduction, reintroduction …

Open Pedagogy: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Findings, Virginia Clinton-Lisell Jul 2021

Open Pedagogy: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Findings, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Open licensing used in open educational resources allows for teaching and learning practices that are not possible with traditional copyright. There is a growing body of empirical research on open pedagogy. However, definitions and instantiations of open pedagogy vary in the literature. The purpose of this review was to systematically search and synthesize empirical findings on open pedagogy. In this, the definitions of open pedagogy across empirical reports were examined. Generally, open pedagogy was defined in the context of open licensing affordances; however, there were exceptions particularly when examining faculty experiences with open pedagogy. Synthesized findings may be used by …

Stress And Coping During Simulated Evas And Habitat Living, Gloria R. Leon, Travis Nelson, Pablo De Leon

Space Studies Faculty Publications

Planning for long duration exploration missions (LDEM) involves both the effectiveness of the extravehicular operations, in particular as it is related to the functioning and comfort of the space suits, and how the crew functions together in accomplishing the objectives of the mission. The University of North Dakota Department of Space Studies has developed a multi-modular Inflatable Lunar/Mars Analog Habitat (ILMAH) and is testing iterations of their NDX-2AT space suit. Five 12-14 day missions, each consisting of 3-4 individuals (Total 13; 11 men, two women) were carried out. Team members independently completed a Daily Rating Form (DRF) each day of …

Development Of Mipi Camera Interface Prototype Adapter Board, Haruka Kido, Alessandro Geist, Cody Brewer Jul 2021

Development Of Mipi Camera Interface Prototype Adapter Board, Haruka Kido, Alessandro Geist, Cody Brewer

Electrical Engineering Student Publications

This project is the development of the prototype FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array)-Compatible MIPI CSI-2 (Camera Serial Interface) D-PHY adapter board. The FPGA used on the SpaceCube processor card does not have I/O that natively supports the D-PHY standard, and thus requires additional external components to adapt the interface to the FPGAs I/O. The goal of this project is to develop a prototype board with this external circuitry. The project tasks include 1) preliminary research and analysis of the adapter circuit requirements involving waveform comparisons, 2) signal processing chain tests for voltage measurements, 3) calculations from I/O channel system simulations …

Telehealth Education In Nursing Curricula Enhances Nursing, Melissa Marx May 2021

Telehealth Education In Nursing Curricula Enhances Nursing, Melissa Marx

Nursing Capstones

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has drastically increased the use of telehealth in nursing practice. Many practicing nurses used telehealth with little to no formal training. Did the pre-licensure registered nurse (RN) programs prepare the nurses to provide the best possible client-centered care when using telehealth? When pre-licensure RN programs are looking at meeting the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) Essentials, adding telehealth education to the curriculum is an expected element of developing a strong academic program. The Essentials outline the necessary curriculum content and expected competencies of graduates from baccalaureate, master’s, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, as …

Autonomy In Nurse Education On Advance Health Care Directives, Rachel Wolden May 2021

Autonomy In Nurse Education On Advance Health Care Directives, Rachel Wolden

Nursing Capstones

Advance Health Care Directives (AHCD) are important documents in place as a way for nurses to respect a patient's autonomy in all aspects of their care. When critical ailments or accidents happen, AHCDs can be an important tool to carry out patient wishes. An in-depth literary search was performed to determine the extent of nurse education received on advance directives. Analysis of a plethora of different scholarly articles from nursing students to veteran staff was reviewed. Beliefs, attitudes, and education were researched on AHCDs and comfortability in nursing. Discussion of the importance of advance directive education given to nurses will …

Introduction Of Incivility Strategies In The Empowerment Of Nursing Faculty And Students, Angela Wolf May 2021

Introduction Of Incivility Strategies In The Empowerment Of Nursing Faculty And Students, Angela Wolf

Nursing Capstones

Incivility in nursing education is a growing occurrence that is shown to have profound negative effects on the entire nursing profession. This is a cycle that starts in nursing school and left unchecked carries forward into the workplace. Uncivil behavior is experienced by students, faculty, and peers. A thorough literature review was conducted to describe incivility that occurs in the classroom and possible interventions that allow for improved conditions for nurse educators and nursing students. One study conducted in the university setting using a mixed study design indicated various possible causes including students pay for their education, so this gives …
