EERC Maps and Infographics

The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership Atlas provides a regional profile of CO2 sources and potential CO2 storage locations across the PCOR Partnership region. The fifth edition provides an up-to-date look at PCOR Partnership activities, including additional regional characterization and updates on full-scale demonstration projects. Additional background information on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is included to give a better understanding of how CCUS addresses concerns about climate change while allowing future energy needs to be met.

Prior work suggests that amyloid precursor protein (APP) can function as a proinflammatory receptor on immune cells, such as monocytes and microglia. Therefore, we hypothesized that APP serves this function in microglia during Alzheimer's disease. Although fibrillar amyloid β (Aβ)-stimulated cytokine secretion from both wild-type and APP knock-out (mAPP−/−) microglial cultures, oligomeric Aβ was unable to stimulate increased secretion from mAPP−/− cells. This was consistent with an ability of oligomeric Aβ to bind APP. Similarly, intracerebroventricular infusions of oligomeric Aβ produced less microgliosis in mAPP−/− mice compared with wild-type mice. The mAPP−/− mice crossed to an APP/PS1 transgenic mouse line …

How Accurately Can Parents Judge Their Children's Boredom In School?, Ulrike E. Nett, Elena C. Daschmann, Thomas Goetz, Robert Stupnisky

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

The purpose of the present study was to explore what parents know about their Children’s boredom in school; specifically, the frequency, intensity, and antecedents of their Children’s boredom, as well as how they cope with boredom. A questionnaire was administered to 437 grade 9 students (54% female, Mage = 14.82) and their parents (72% mothers, 14% fathers, 12% both parents, Mage = 45.26) measuring variables related to students boredom in mathematics class. Three different measurements were used to evaluate the accuracy of parents’ judgments: (1) the correlation between parents’ and students’ answers, (2) the mean differences between parents’ and students’ …

Digital Fragment Analysis Of Short Tandem Repeats By High‐Throughput Amplicon Sequencing, Brian J. Darby, Shay F. Erickson, Samuel D. Hervey, Susan N. Ellis-Felege Jun 2016

Digital Fragment Analysis Of Short Tandem Repeats By High‐Throughput Amplicon Sequencing, Brian J. Darby, Shay F. Erickson, Samuel D. Hervey, Susan N. Ellis-Felege

Biology Faculty Publications

High‐throughput sequencing has been proposed as a method to genotype microsatellites and overcome the four main technical drawbacks of capillary electrophoresis: amplification artifacts, imprecise sizing, length homoplasy, and limited multiplex capability. The objective of this project was to test a high‐throughput amplicon sequencing approach to fragment analysis of short tandem repeats and characterize its advantages and disadvantages against traditional capillary electrophoresis. We amplified and sequenced 12 muskrat microsatellite loci from 180 muskrat specimens and analyzed the sequencing data for precision of allele calling, propensity for amplification or sequencing artifacts, and for evidence of length homoplasy. Of the 294 total alleles, …

Longitudinal Effects Of Embryonic Exposure To Cocaine On Morphology, Cardiovascular Physiology, And Behavior In Zebrafish, Eric J. Mersereau, Cody A. Boyle, Shelby Poitra, Ana Espinoza, Joclyn Seiler, Robert Longie, Lisa Delvo, Megan Szarkowski, Joshua Maliske, Sarah Chalmers, Tristan Darland, Diane Darland

Biology Faculty Publications

A sizeable portion of the societal drain from cocaine abuse results from the complications of in utero drug exposure. Because of challenges in using humans and mammalian model organisms as test subjects, much debate remains about the impact of in utero cocaine exposure. Zebrafish offer a number of advantages as a model in longitudinal toxicology studies and are quite sensitive physiologically and behaviorally to cocaine. In this study, we have used zebrafish to model the effects of embryonic pre-exposure to cocaine on development and on subsequent cardiovascular physiology and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in longitudinal adults. Larval fish showed …

Species-Recognition Program: A Computer-Assisted Approach To Recognizing Species, Steve Kelsch, Jeffrey Carmichael May 2016

Species-Recognition Program: A Computer-Assisted Approach To Recognizing Species, Steve Kelsch, Jeffrey Carmichael

Biology Faculty Publications

Species recognition is a crucial component for many types of biological studies. To that end, broadly trained students must be able to accurately identify many different types of organisms. Courses that focus on learning the names of different species traditionally rely on preserved specimens viewed during class or laboratory time. Unfortunately, reliance on preserved specimens comes with many challenges in providing students with an optimal learning experience. The curriculum activity described here uses a modified PowerPoint file (species-recognition program—SRP) as a means of helping students learn to recognize and identify fishes based on subtle visual cues. Our results indicate that …

The Relationship Of A Pilot's Educational Background, Aeronautical Experience And Recency Of Experience To Performance In Initial Training At A Regional Airline, Nancy Shane May 2016

The Relationship Of A Pilot's Educational Background, Aeronautical Experience And Recency Of Experience To Performance In Initial Training At A Regional Airline, Nancy Shane

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how a pilot’s educational background, aeronautical experience and recency of experience relate to their performance during initial training at a regional airline. Results show that variables in pilots’ educational background, aeronautical experience and recency of experience do predict performance in training. The most significant predictors include years since graduation from college, multi-engine time, total time and whether or not a pilot had military flying experience. Due to the pilot shortage, the pilots entering regional airline training classes since August 2013 have varied backgrounds, aeronautical experience and recency of experience. As explained by …

Measuring Change In Pm2.5 Emissions As Nextgen Operational Procedures Are Implemented At Large U.S. Airports, Demerise Eileen Tighe May 2016

Measuring Change In Pm2.5 Emissions As Nextgen Operational Procedures Are Implemented At Large U.S. Airports, Demerise Eileen Tighe

Theses and Dissertations

The aviation industry is a contributing source of particulate matter (PM), a pollutant known to negatively impact human health. The NextGen program has a focus on reducing aviation fuel burn. Since PM is a direct byproduct of jet fuel combustion, this study evaluated whether the operational procedures implemented as a part of NextGen can be correlated with measurable reductions in PM emissions. Recorded PM, number of aircraft operations, and annual average daily road traffic data from 2008-2012 were collected from a selection of seven U.S. metropolitan areas. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed to see if any significant relationships …
