Development And Validation Of A Kinetic Model For Enzymatic Hydrolysis Using Candida Rugosa Lipase, Ammar Jamie, Ali Alshami, Zuhair O. Maliabari, Muataz A. Ateih

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Biochemical processing involving enzymatic catalysis of hydrolysis reactions of oils and fats must overcome significant technological barriers before the full benefits of the technology can be realized. Owing to their selectivity and mild reaction conditions, lipases are becoming increasingly important as biocatalysts provided that their kinetics and optimum reaction conditions are well-understood. In this study we report on the development and validation of a kinetic model for the degradation of oils using Candida rugosa lipase, from which a better understanding of the influence of different reaction conditions on hydrolysis kinetics is elucidated. Variations of reaction temperature, mixing speed, enzyme loading …

Association Between Proton Pump Inhibitor Use & Dementia: A Two-Fold Approach, Lisa Steers Jan 2017

Association Between Proton Pump Inhibitor Use & Dementia: A Two-Fold Approach, Lisa Steers

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

An observational study of data derived from the German Study on Aging, Cognition and Dementia indicated that proton pump inhibitor use was associated with dementia risk (Benmassaoud, McDonald, & Lee, 2016). The purpose of this study is to explore a two-fold approach between proton pump inhibitor use and dementia. This two-fold approach will first investigate the association between dementia and proton pump inhibitor use and secondly, the proposed pathophysiology behind it. This approach to proton pump inhibitor use and dementia will allow for providers to utilize the association and make decisions to avoid chronic proton pump inhibitor use in effort …

Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nest Survival And Nest Predator Habitat Use In North Dakota’S Bakken Oil Field, Paul C. Burr, Aaron C. Robinson, Randy T. Larsen, Robert A. Newman, Susan N. Ellis-Felege

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent advancements in extraction technologies have resulted in rapid increases of gas and oil development across the United States and specifically in western North Dakota. This expansion of energy development has unknown influences on local wildlife populations and the ecological interactions within and among species. Our objectives for this study were to evaluate nest success and nest predator dynamics of sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) in two study sites that represented areas of high and low energy development intensities in North Dakota. During the summers of 2012 and 2013, we monitored 163 grouse nests using radio telemetry. Of these, …

Landscape Features Affecting Northern Bobwhite Predator-Specific Nest Failures In Southeastern Usa, Susan N. Ellis-Felege, Shannon E. Albeke, Nathan P. Nibbelink, Michael J. Conroy, Clay Sisson, William E. Palmer, John P. Carroll

Biology Faculty Publications

Nest predation is a critical component in avian productivity and typically is the leading cause of nest failure for most birds. Several landscape features are thought to drive the behavioral interaction between northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; e.g., nest placement) and their predators (e.g., search methods for food acquisition). In order to understand habitat characteristics influencing predation, we studied bobwhite nests using 24-hour near-infrared video cameras. We monitored 675 bobwhite nests with cameras on 3 properties in northern Florida and southern Georgia, USA, during 2000–2006. To test the association between nest failures and specific failure causes with landscape structure, we calculated …

The Molecular Mechanisms Of Sex Determination In Vertebrates, Lei Guo Jan 2017

The Molecular Mechanisms Of Sex Determination In Vertebrates, Lei Guo

Theses and Dissertations

Many reptiles display temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), in which the primary sex is determined by incubation temperatures rather than sex chromosomes. However, temperature is not the only factor that play critical roles in sex determination in the species with TSD. Previous studies in the snapping turtle, a species with TSD, showed that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) induces ovary development at temperatures that normally produce males or mixed sex ratios. In addition, the feminizing effect of DHT was found to be associated with increased expression of the ovary-determining gene Foxl2, suggesting a potential androgen-Foxl2 regulatory mechanism. This dissertation aims to clarify the molecular …

Using Phylogenetic Analysis To Diagnose Freshwater Molluscan Species In The Judith River Formation Of Hill And Fergus Counties, Montana, With Notes On Depositional Environments And Quality Of Preservation, Matthew Illies

Theses and Dissertations

The Judith River Formation has a long history of study, from Meek and Hayden’s expeditions in the 1850s to E. D. Cope’s searches for new dinosaur species. More recently, the Judith River Formation receives a plethora of research in paleontology and geology. Despite this, little work has been done on the freshwater molluscan fauna found within. The purpose of this study was to create a method where accurate species diagnoses become possible, and to create a launching point for future work in the Judith River Formation. Freshwater mollusk specimens were collected from shell beds in the Judith River Formation at …

The Analysis And Costume Design Of Jennifer Haley's The Nether, Emily Taylor Jan 2017

The Analysis And Costume Design Of Jennifer Haley's The Nether, Emily Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

In designing the costumes for a play there are many pieces that have to come together, both personal and collaborative. An analysis of the text and the characters help broaden the ideas that a designer must use. As the costume designer for a production of Jennifer Haley’s The Nether it was important to bring in the analysis as well as everything that the rest of the design team brings in. The final product came out in a fully realized production of the play in February 2017 at UND.

Characterization Of The Immune Stimulating Properties Of Type Iii Secretion System Needle Protein Bscf From Bordetella Pertussis: Towards The Development Of A New Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Travis Douglas Alvine

Theses and Dissertations

Despite widespread vaccination, Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whooping cough, is still a threat to global health. One cause of pertussis reemergence observed in many countries is ineffective immunity generated by the current acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines. Interestingly, recent studies have shown that TLR stimulating agents can enhance aP vaccine induced immunity. Type III secretion (T3S) system needle proteins from many gram-negative bacteria have been shown to be strong TLR agonists that induce NF-B/AP-1 signaling and promote inflammatory cytokine release from innate cells in vitro. In this study, we investigated the immune modulating properties of BscF, a purified T3S …

Acetate Supplementation Reduces Disease Progression, Alters Cns And Myelin Lipid Content, And Influences Cns And Myelin Protein Content In Mice Subjected To Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Amber C. Chevalier Jan 2017

Acetate Supplementation Reduces Disease Progression, Alters Cns And Myelin Lipid Content, And Influences Cns And Myelin Protein Content In Mice Subjected To Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Amber C. Chevalier

Theses and Dissertations

Acetate supplementation increases brain acetyl-CoA levels that influence inflammation, energy production, histone and non-histone protein acetylation, and purinergic signaling. Interestingly, acetate significantly increases fatty acid content in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV2 (immortalized murine cell line) microglia compared to control-treated LPS-stimulated cells. This suggests that increasing brain acetyl-CoA metabolism may also influence lipid synthesis. We wanted to determine if treatment with glyceryl triacetate alters central nervous system (CNS) lipid content in mice subjected to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an autoimmune multiple sclerosis model. In addition, we performed experiments to determine whether treatment had an effect on disease progression, protein levels of enzymes …

Spacesuit Integrated Carbon Nanotube Dust Mitigation System For Lunar Exploration, Kavya Kamal Manyapu Jan 2017

Spacesuit Integrated Carbon Nanotube Dust Mitigation System For Lunar Exploration, Kavya Kamal Manyapu

Theses and Dissertations

Lunar dust proved to be troublesome during the Apollo missions. The lunar dust comprises of fine particles, with electric charges imparted by solar winds and ultraviolet radiation. As such, it adheres readily, and easily penetrates through smallest crevices into mechanisms. During Apollo missions, the powdery dust substantially degraded the performance of spacesuits by abrading suit fabric and clogging seals. Dust also degraded other critical equipment such as rovers, thermal control and optical surfaces, solar arrays, and was thus shown to be a major issue for surface operations. Even inside the lunar module, Apollo astronauts were exposed to this dust when …

Urban Heat Island Demonstration And Temperature Progression Using Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Elliot Quinn Peltier Jan 2017

Urban Heat Island Demonstration And Temperature Progression Using Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Elliot Quinn Peltier

Theses and Dissertations

Urban heat islands are urban areas that become large enough to impact local climate, specifically by increasing temperatures. Urban centers are made of surfaces, high concentrations of buildings, and greenhouse gases that are susceptible to retaining heat. As more people move into cities, more space is needed for urbanization, increasing factors that raise temperature. This also affects energy demand, increases need for maintenance, and affects climate sensitive people.

Using the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, the objective is to demonstrate the urban heat island effect to see the extent to which heat islands impact urban climate. The years under observation cover …

Immune Regulatory Mechanism And Myeloid Cells Functions In Brain Parasite Infection, Fredice Quenum Zangbede Jan 2017

Immune Regulatory Mechanism And Myeloid Cells Functions In Brain Parasite Infection, Fredice Quenum Zangbede

Theses and Dissertations

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by the helminth parasite Taenia solium (T. solium) and affects 50-100 million people worldwide. Its clinical symptoms include headache, seizures, hydrocephalus, epilepsy and stroke. These clinical symptoms can have life-long detrimental effects. As many as half of the total adult-onset seizures and 10% of the stroke cases in the endemic areas are attributed to NCC, whereas 20% to 30% of symptomatic patients display hydrocephalus. Treatment of NCC remains a major challenge as the severity of the symptoms is thought to be elicited by the degenerating …

The Impact Of Gender, Victim Weight, And Victim Responsibility On Attributions Of Blame And Responsibility In A Case Of Nonconsensual Pornography, Carolyn Ann Uhl Jan 2017

The Impact Of Gender, Victim Weight, And Victim Responsibility On Attributions Of Blame And Responsibility In A Case Of Nonconsensual Pornography, Carolyn Ann Uhl

Theses and Dissertations

The sharing of sexually explicit messages or photographs, known as sexting, is on the rise. As a result, nonconsensual pornography, commonly referred to as revenge porn, is also increasing. Victims of nonconsensual pornography suffer a variety of negative consequences following the distribution of their photographs. Various case and victim characteristics of nonconsensual pornography cases may alter observer perceptions of these situations. This study utilized a mock police report describing a case in which a former romantic partner distributed nude photographs of the victim online without the victim’s consent. The police reports were identical, apart from manipulations of victim gender, victim …

The Prediction Of Nonmedical Prescription Stimulant Use In College Students, Danielle Lynn Beyer Jan 2017

The Prediction Of Nonmedical Prescription Stimulant Use In College Students, Danielle Lynn Beyer

Theses and Dissertations

The use of prescription stimulant medications, such as Ritalin and Adderall, has increased dramatically over the past two decades (Zuvekas & Vitiello, 2014). Particularly concerning to public health officials has been the escalation of college students who report nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NPS). Studies have identified cognitive enhancement (i.e., increased concentration, etc.) as the primary motive for college students to engage in NPS (DeSantis et al, 2011; Smith & Farah, 2011). Additional findings suggest individuals involved with Greek organizations and/or individuals who maintain lower cumulative grade point averages (GPA) report significantly higher rates of NPS than Non-Greek and/or higher GPA …

Problem: As of October 2016, over 65.3 million people have been displaced from their home due to civil wars and civil unrest; 21.3 million of this population are refugees and this number continues to grow (UNHCR, 2016). Due to the nature in which people become refugees and experience trauma, both physically and mentally, there is a rising need for health professionals to be culturally competent and well equipped to work with this population. The vast majority of refugee populations face barriers some of which include being forced to adapt to a new home environment, social isolation, language barriers, and ultimately …

Development And Validation Of The Internalized Classism Scale For Poor And Working Class In The United States, Aleska Randa Hagan Jan 2017

Development And Validation Of The Internalized Classism Scale For Poor And Working Class In The United States, Aleska Randa Hagan

Theses and Dissertations

The poor and working class are largely overlooked or ignored across many aspects of U.S society including public policy, societal structure, representation in media, and even in the realm of psychological research (Lott, 2002; Smith, 2005). Furthermore, of the scanty representations and descriptions of the poor and working class that are available, most are derived from oppressive classist views and negative stereotypes (Smith, 2010). Classism pervades the social structure of the United States. Classist beliefs and experiences of classism are internalized by all members of society to some degree. Working class and poor people who experience internalized classism are likely …
