It is the purpose of this thesis to prepare the way for further study and consideration of the Indian problem as presented on Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The material is largely from original sources gathered through years of work among the Indians and whites who remember the period 1874 - 1890. This paper was limited to those years because they mark an epoch in the relations of these people with our own. It begins with the drifting of the discontented Indians of the newly created reservation to and from the camp of Sitting Bull and it ends with the death …

Text of speech delivered by Melvin Brannon at the UND Spring Commencement on June 8, 1947. Brannon was Dean of the UND Medical School from 1905 until 1911 and the College of Liberal Arts from 1911 to 1914. After leaving UND, he served as President of the University of Idaho and Beloit College, in addition to acting as Chancellor of the University of Montana. He entitled his remarks: "Citizenship in a Changing Civilization."

The "Heroes of Dakota" were: La Verendrye, fur trader and explorer; Alexander Henry, fur trader; Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, explorers; the Earl of Selkirk, founder of the Red River Colony in Canada; George Catlin, artist; Sitting Bull, Hunkpapa Lakota leader; James J. Hill, business leader; Marquis de Mores, frontier rancher in Medora, Dakota Territory; and Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States.
