The Influence Of Curiosity On Intentional And Incidental Learning, Richard L. Metzger Dec 1971

The Influence Of Curiosity On Intentional And Incidental Learning, Richard L. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that the level of curiosity of an individual is related to the amount of information which that individual can acquire incidentally. The present study was conducted to test two hypotheses: (a) High curiosity children will learn more material incidentally than low curiosity children, and (b) the level of curiosity will effect intentional learning.

Twenty-eight fifth grade students (14 high curious, 14 low) were selected as subjects from a pool of 77 on the basis of scores attained on the Penney and McCann (1964) Children’s Reactive Curiosity Scale. The intentional learning task was a paired-associate presentation of …

Aggressive Behavior As A Function Of Trait Anxiety, Anger And Sex, Brian A. Middleton Aug 1971

Aggressive Behavior As A Function Of Trait Anxiety, Anger And Sex, Brian A. Middleton

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between trait anxiety and physical aggression was investigated. Two additional variables, sex and anger level of the Ss were considered. It was hypothesized that males would express more aggression than females and that angered Ss would be more aggressive than nonangered Ss. No hypotheses were made concerning the relationship between trait anxiety and physical aggression.

Seventy-two undergraduates at the University of North Dakota were selected as Ss. A 3x2x2 factorial design was used with three levels of anxiety and two categories of anger and sex. Six Ss were assigned to each treatment condition. Trait anxiety was defined by …

Mass Production As A Basis For Content In Industrial Arts, Ernesto Breznay

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to critically analyze the factors involved in mass production and to develop an instructional system for mass production based on behavioral objectives.

The critical analysis of major factors in mass production involved a review of industrial literature and professional journals in industrial education. An instructional system for mass production was developed from information revealed in the review of literature and an experimental study of the system was conducted at the junior high level.

Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr. Aug 1971

Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Study of the factors influencing the occurrence of aggression received impetus from the frustration-aggression hypothesis of 1939. It was hypothesized that aggression was the primary consequence of frustration, and that the stronger the frustration, the stronger the aggression. Numerous studies have shown that frustration can lead to aggression v/ith organisms ranging along the phylogenetic scale from rats to humans. While questionnaire studies have shown that the strength of aggression varies v/ith the strength of frustration, this has not been verified in laboratory studies of direct physical aggression.

Recently, the importance of situational variables, such as the perceived arbitrariness of the …

Studies On The Mutual Influences Of Substrates On Mammalian Alpha-Keto Acid Metabolism, Wayne A. Johnson Aug 1971

Studies On The Mutual Influences Of Substrates On Mammalian Alpha-Keto Acid Metabolism, Wayne A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine are transaminated to their respective a-keto acid analogues; a-keto- isocaproate (KIC) a-keto-p-methyIvalerate (KMV) and a-ketoiso- valerate (KIV) in normal mammalian tissues. Recently an interest in the genetic anomaly "branched-chain ketoaciduria" or "maple syrup urine disease", a metabolic disease involving the oxidative decarboxylation of the three branched-chain CC-keto acids, has stimulated efforts to characterize the nature of the enzymic conversions leading from the a-keto acids to their acyl coenzyme A products. These studies have been extended toward a consideration of the metabolic interrelationships among these a-keto acids (KIC, KMV, KIV). Furthermore, the effects …

Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling Aug 1971

Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling

Theses and Dissertations

Conditioned suppression describes the attenuation of an ongoing operant (e.g., lever press or key peck) when a warning stimulus precedes unavoidable electric shock. First reported by Estes and Skinner (1941), the procedure has been refined by Kamin (1961, 1965) and other investigators (Geller, 1963, 1964; Hunt and Brady, 1955; and James and Mostoway, 1968). Although many of the parameters of conditioned suppression have been evaluated, relatively little attention has been given to interstimulus intervals. In the only parametric study of interstimulus intervals, Libby (1951) investigated seven short intervals ranging from 0 to 30 seconds. He reported that suppression increased as …

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder Aug 1971

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Piaget (1929) contends that a verbal interview is the only procedure which is flexible enough to follow and examine the development of cognitive processes in children. However verbal methods are inconsistent with the suggestion by Piaget (1951, 1963) and several colleagues (Furth, 1964, 1966; Sinclair-de-Zwart, 1969) that language merely reflects underlying cognitive processes, and is not a source of logical development. In addition verbal methods allow for verbal misunderstandings by both subjects and experimenters, provide for experimenter bias and may foster response sets.

To minimize these theoretical and methodological difficulties, several investigations (e.g., Braine, 1959, 1962; Sawda & Nelson, 1968) …

The Psammon Of Bars And Beaches In Two Small Northwestern Minnesota Streams, Richard D. Urban

Theses and Dissertations

Sand bars and beaches of the Mississippi (MR) and Wild Rice (WRR) Rivers, Minnesota, were sampled to allow determination of sand texture, capillarity, pore space, organic content, temperature, chemistry (pH, Og, CO3 and HCO3 alkalinity, total hardness, Ca, Mg, PO4, NH3-N, and NO2-N) of interstitial, water, and composition and concentration of psammo-organisms, all in relation to current influences, distance above and below waterline, and depth into the sand.

Minimum and maximum values for capillary rise were 36-80 mm in the MR and 118-191 mm in the WRR; organic content was 217.4 mg/10cc sand for the MR and 377.1 mg/10cc sand …

Nationalism And Patriotic Idealism As Thematic Aspects In Art, Daniel A. Doucette May 1971

Nationalism And Patriotic Idealism As Thematic Aspects In Art, Daniel A. Doucette

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has a two-fold purpose: (1) to provide an historical outline of the incidence of patriotic thematic material in Western art by presenting examples of works from dominant Western cultures beginning with Greece and Rome and including Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United States. Examples given are in sequence from the eleventh century to the present excluding the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries. Greek and Roman examples are from two major epochs—the Hellenistic period of Greece, 323 to 146 B.C. (Greek period of nationalism) and the period 27 to 117 A.D. in Roman history (the period in …

Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii May 1971

Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Sharp-tailed Grouse has evolved a highly complex system of visual and acoustical signals due to increased social interactions necessary with the predator pressure of an exposed environment. The first portion of the spring mating season is primarily involved with establishment and defense of territories. Predominant acoustical signals are aggressive, highly ritualized, and involved in individual location and recognition. During mid-season females visit the lek, are courted by males, and copulations occur. Acoustical signals are concerned with attracting and stimulating females, vary on a time and frequency continuum, and are thus not as highly ritualized. During the last portion of …

The Development Of A Modular-Flexible Schedule Model And Its Utilization In Building A New Secondary School Physics Curriculum, Lloyd L. Fezler

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: It was the primary purpose of this study to develop a secondary school physics curriculum guide for use within a modular-flexible schedule framework. A secondary aspect was to design a model modular-flexible schedule specifically for physics instruction.

Procedure: Information has been obtained through the direct visitation of seventeen schools in the Minneapolis-St. Paul and suburban areas which were using a modular-flexible scheduled program. A comprehensive study has been made of the physics curricula used in each school to determine its relative effectiveness within a modular-flexible framework.

Interrogation of administrators, staff members and. curriculum • specialists was employed to ascertain …

A Psychophysical Approach To Clinical Judgment On The Mmpi, Richard L. Listiak Jan 1971

A Psychophysical Approach To Clinical Judgment On The Mmpi, Richard L. Listiak

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation attempted to extend the psychophysical analogy to the study of clinical judgment on the MMPI. Previous judgmental research has dealt with multidimensional diagnosis or with simulation of clinicians' judgments on the MMPI. It was believed that the previous research examining the process of clinical judgment had not employed sufficiently sensitive methodologies. Therefore, in this study both direct estimation procedures and classical psychophysical methods were employed in an effort to describe and quantify directly the relationship between clinical judgment and the MMPI. These methods, particularly the former, have been demonstrated to be beneficial to use when exploring the …

Erosion And Sedimentation In Lake Ashtabula, Southeastern North Dakota, Darryll T. Pederson

Theses and Dissertations

Erosion along the shore of Lake Ashtabula and nearshore and offshore sedimentation were studied from May 1969 to December 1970. The lake, located in the southeastern part of North Dakota, was formed when the Baldhill Dam stopped the flow of the Sheyenne River in 1950. Maximum depth of the lake is 45 feet in the inundated river channel immediately above the dam. The lake is 27 miles long and ranges in width from 1/3 to 1/2 mile.

Shoreline erosion, measured at stations located at 100-foot intervals around the margins of the lake, was found to be a major source of …

Quantitative Geomorphology And Hydrology Of The Cass River Basin, New Zealand, Frank J. Schulte

Theses and Dissertations

The Cass River drainage basin is in the Southern Alps in the central part of the South Island of New Zealand. The Alps are composed of complexly folded greywacke which is still actively rising. The basin has been modified by several glacial advances during Pleistocene time.

The Cass basin has a temperate climate characterized by a steep precipitation gradient. Its vegetation includes plants of the forest grassland, shrubland, swamp, rock, and river-bed associations.

The Cass basin may be divided into four geomorphic areas: bedrock areas, high-angle fans, moderate-angle fans, and a low-angle fan. The bedrock areas consist of fractured greywacke; …
