Living And Recent Dead Milluscan Assemblages Upper Lasalle Lake, Minnesota, Kenneth W. Wangerud

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Living and recent dead mollusks were sampled by SCUBA in Upper LaSalle Lake, northwestern Minnesota, in 1972 along belt transects paralleling the depth contours and normal to the shoreline. Three aquatic plant associations were found in the lake – dense, finely-branching forms in shallow water; less dense and a greater percentage of broad-leaved plants in intermediate depths; and a sparse density of a finely-branching forms in deep water. Two live species of mussels (in order of decreasing abundance) – Lampsilis radiata luteola (Lamarck, 1819), and Anodonta grandis Say, 1829 – were found at maximum depths of 5 and 6 m, …

Attitudes And Behavior Of Educators Involved In Confluent Teaching, Martin M. Koller Dec 1972

Attitudes And Behavior Of Educators Involved In Confluent Teaching, Martin M. Koller

Theses and Dissertations

The study attempted to clarify the relationships between expressed attitude and observed teacher behavior. The purpose was to find positive ways of causing educators to incorporate cognitive and affective processes into their educational activities. At the same time, ways of meeting student needs in a confluent setting were sought.

The review of the literature provided relevant information already available through the efforts of other researchers. A multidiscipline approach in this review resulted in several conclusions:

1. Certain bio-self needs result in feelings that cause behavior.

2. Feelings and learning can be correlated so that behavior change takes place.

3. Learning …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of In-Service Science Assistance On Elementary Teacher And Student Attitudes And Practices, Douglas A. Degroote

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine whether in-service science assistance will affect positively the attitudes and practices of elementary teachers and students.

Procedure: The investigator designed and implemented a six month in- service science program for elementary teachers and students. The study population consisted of 12 first through sixth grade teachers and their 313 pupils in one elementary school in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Change in attitudes and practices of teachers was measured by comparing pre-test and post-test scores on the Actual Science Classroom Environment instrument, which was designed to determine what types of activities teachers perceived …

The Origin And Differentiation Of The Thrombocytes Of The Chicken (Gallus Domesticus), Thomas M. Mcneilis

Theses and Dissertations

Blood smears and bone marrow smears obtained from sixteen White Leghorn chickens varying in age from five to seventy days after hatching mere stained with Wright's stain, and histological sections of the bone marrow mere stained with Maximow's eosin- azure II stain.

This study of the origin and differentiation of the definitive series of thrombocytes has yielded information that confirms the work of Lucas and Jamroz (19S1) which shows that the thrombocytes are a separate series of blood cells that have an origin independent of the origin of all other blood cells.

The earliest identifiable cell of the definitive thrombocyte …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a self-concept enhancement program on the self-concepts of four-year-old children, and to discover significant aspects of their environment which are related to their self-concepts.

The population sample consisted of all four-year-olds (pretest=57» posttest*.52) attending Kiddie Kampus Preschool, Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. Both the experimental group (N=3^) receiving the self-concept enhancement program, and the control group (N=l8) not receiving the treatment program, were assessed during the pretesting and posttesting periods. The twenty-five variables assessed by The Thomas. Self-Concept Values Test (19 scales) and the Developmental Profile (6 …

Multiple Unit Correlates Of Discrimination Learning In Rats, Lynn C. Conrad May 1972

Multiple Unit Correlates Of Discrimination Learning In Rats, Lynn C. Conrad

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple unit recording is a relatively new electrophysiological recording technique which records spike potentials from many neurons. In several laboratories, systematic changes have been observed during classical and instrumental conditioning but none under other conditioning procedures. The present study attempts to extend the method of multiple unit recording to discrimination learning using rats as experimental animals.

Five permanent electrodes were implanted in each of six rats. The sites implanted were the dorsal medial hypothalamus, the amygdaloid complex, the reticular formation, the medial geniculate, and the inferior colliculus. The animals were subjected to discrimination training which utilized tone as the auditory …

Histological Changes In The Rat's Spleen Induced By Selected Anesthetic Agents, Donald R. Fowler May 1972

Histological Changes In The Rat's Spleen Induced By Selected Anesthetic Agents, Donald R. Fowler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine what histological parameters of the rat's spleen were altered as a result of the anesthetic agent used. It also was desired to determine which anesthetic agent might be the most suitable to use in a transillumination study of the microcirculation of the living rat's spleen.

It was found that sodium Amytal administered intraperitoneally results in splenic dilatation. Chloral hydrate and sodium thiopental, given intraperitoneally, resulted in splenic contraction. Penthrane, ether, and chloroform administered by inhalation technique also resulted in splenic contraction. Penthrane and chloral hydrate while producing splenic contraction appear to do …
