Effect Of Hemorrhage On Blood Flow To Marrow And Osseous Tissue In Conscious Rabbits, Glenn T. Syftestad Aug 1976

Effect Of Hemorrhage On Blood Flow To Marrow And Osseous Tissue In Conscious Rabbits, Glenn T. Syftestad

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this experiment was to characterize cardiovascular responses in skeletal tissue 15 minutes and 16 hours following reversible hemorrhagic hypotension and to validate a quantitative method for measuring blood flow rates in marrow and bone.

Cardiac output and regional blood flow determinations were made using the radioactive microsphere technique. Microspheres (15 u dia) were injected into unanesthetized rabbits via a chronically implanted left atrial catheter. Blood flow and cardiac output measurements were made by injecting individual microsphere isotopes, each with a different label (®^Sr, 5 1 c r Gr l ^ C e ) , at three specified …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder Aug 1976

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Ulrich and Flavell (1970) note that although aggression is more a problem today than it has ever been, and although there have been centuries of concern, little has been done to develop effective controls. One conceptual framework for explaining the occurrence and control of aggressive behavior is social learning theory. Bandura (1973) suggests that aggressive behaviors that are reinforced will be strengthened. Several studies with children support this notion (Cowan & Walters, 1963; Davitz, 1952, & Lovaas, 1961). Those aggressive behaviors that are punished or unrewarded will be weakened or eliminated. Hawkins, Peterson, Schweid, and Bijou (1966) suggested that extinction …

Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner Aug 1976

Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner

Theses and Dissertations

Bandura and his colleagues have demonstrated that modeling techniques using fearless "mastery" models can be useful in helping clients overcome irrational fears (Bandura, Grusec and Menlove, 1967; Bandura and Menlove, 1968; Bandura, Blanchard and Ritter, 1969). Later, Meichenbaum (1971) found that initially fearful "coping" models who gradually overcome their fear are more effective than mastery models. However, research on the effects of model status has not investigated coping models. The present study attempted to discern how model status influences the effectiveness of coping models.

Thirty-two female Introduction to psychology students who reported themselves to be speech anxious were asked to …

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among teacher and pupil self-concept and pupil reading achievement at the first grade level. To accomplish this purpose pupil self-concept and pupil reading achievement were measured on a pre and post basis. Teacher data comprised of scores of teacher self-concept, teacher's views of the teaching profession, and teacher's views of children as students were also obtained. Attention was given to determining whether changes in the pupils' levels of self-concept had taken place during the school year, whether any exhibited changes in pupil self- concept correlated to changes in pupil reading …

The Effect Of The Presence Of An Unfamiliar Peer On Stranger Preference And Separation From The Mother In 15-Month-Olds, Robert Arlyn Harms May 1976

The Effect Of The Presence Of An Unfamiliar Peer On Stranger Preference And Separation From The Mother In 15-Month-Olds, Robert Arlyn Harms

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the responses of 15-month-old toddlers to unfamiliar peers in the context of toddler-mother attachment. The subjects were twenty-two 15-month-old toddlers, who were observed singly and in pairs under mother-present and mother-absent conditions. Each toddler was involved in a sequence of six 3-minute episodes in an experimental room with toys. Using a counter-balanced procedure, three of the episodes for one toddler overlapped with three of the episodes for the other toddler so that one experimental session consisted of nine episodes. In both the one- toddler and the two-toddler halves of the six-episode …

Effects Of Emotional Inoculation And Supportive Therapy On Stress Incurred From Nursing Home Placement, Mary B. Carman

Research indicates that relocation of an elderly person to a nursing home constitutes a major stress to the individual which can be life threatening. The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of two different treatment approaches in attenuating that stress.

Thirty-six elderly persons being placed in nursing homes for the first time were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Subjects in the Emotional Inoculation (El) Group x;ere seen for three consecutive days in the hospital, prior to entering a nursing home, for purposes of giving them information about the facility and preparing them for some of the …
