Effectiveness Of Child-Management Training, Candace Joan Varvil
Effectiveness Of Child-Management Training, Candace Joan Varvil
Theses and Dissertations
The object of this study was to compare two different child management approaches (one general and one more specific) and to determine their effectiveness relative to each other. Subjects for this study were 22 parents who responded to a letter sent out by the group leader through four elementary schools in the Grand Forks Public School System. One week prior to the beginning of the sessions the leader visited each of the families to explain the research program and to have the parents fill out the pretest measures. All parents filled out basic demographic data, the Hereford Parent Attitude Survey, …
Modality Specific Predicate Usage And Imagery Vividness, Joann C. Russell
Modality Specific Predicate Usage And Imagery Vividness, Joann C. Russell
Theses and Dissertations
Bancller and Grinder (1975, 1976) propose a model oE communication and change which is based on the assumption that the language used by an individual directly reflects the sensory nature of his conscious experience. A preference for some mode(s) over others for representation of experience is purportedly evidenced by relatively more frequent occurrence in the person's speech of predicates specific to the favored mode(s). Further, imagery is said to be more vivid in preferred representational systems.
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between modality specific predicate usage and vividness of sensory imagery. Subjects were 42 undergraduate students …

The Relationship Of Social And Maturational Variables To Development Of Field-Dependence In Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Study, Elizabeth S. Baraga
The Relationship Of Social And Maturational Variables To Development Of Field-Dependence In Preschoolers: A Longitudinal Study, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
This study was an initial attempt to relate theoretically and empirically three heretofore independent developmental concepts— differentiation, attachment and competence. Borrowing from Mahler's thesis of separation-individuation, differentiation is thought to be a process which begins when the child separates himself from mother. It is hypothesized that differentiation begins at about six months within the context of a mother-child symbiotic relationship.
Once the infant has formed initial body boundaries he is then capable of forming a specific bond to his primary caretaker. This mother-child bonding has been labelled attachment by other theorists and is hypothesized to occur at about 9 months. …
Discrimination Learning Sets In Children, Sandra Harrell Fenner
Discrimination Learning Sets In Children, Sandra Harrell Fenner
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship between the formation of discrimination learning set and children's ability to use logical thinking as indicated by verbalization of the rule of the problem. Twenty-seven seven-year-olds and 27 nine-year-olds, all females, within the average IQ range, were presented four-trial object discrimination problems as a game. Each child was presented 20 problems per day for one to three days until she reached the criterion of two successive problems in which no error was made on trials 2, 3, and 4 of both problems. After every ten problems the experimenter asked the subject questions to determine whether …

Self-Concept In Children Of Alcoholics, David J. Baraga
Self-Concept In Children Of Alcoholics, David J. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
The progressive deterioration of an alcohol abuser is well documented. As the alcoholic continues to sink into a deeper dependency on alcohol, he experiences devastating physical and emotional repercussions. Not the least of the repercussions is the gradual breakdown of his family system. As the alcoholic moves toward the bottle, his family moves away from him, with the result that alcoholism ranks as one of the leading causes of broken homes. Alcoholism is double-edged; it affects not only the primary victim but it exerts a heavy toll on the spouse and children as well. Only recently has stress in research …

The Differentiation Of Mercury Species In Submicrogram Quantities In Aqueous Solution, David A. Hildebrand
The Differentiation Of Mercury Species In Submicrogram Quantities In Aqueous Solution, David A. Hildebrand
Theses and Dissertations
Although trace analysis procedures for the analysis of total mercury have been available for a number of years, a major shortcoming of the procedures has been the inability to differentiate between the exact chemical forms of mercury species in solution. This is needed due to the varlng toxicity of the different species. An investigation was made of the possible analytical procedures which could be used for a separation and quantitation of mercury (0), mercury(I), mercury(II), methyl- and phenylmercury(II). The method of flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy (PAA) was used to detect mercury vapor produced by reduction of all mercury species or …
