The research problem was— to study the relationship between Maritain's concept of the habitus and the fine art of musical performance.
The purpose of the study was (1) to identify philosophical truths concerning the role of the habitus in musical performance; and (2) to apply these truths to the performance program in music education.
The research procedure was a philosophical analysis of Maritain’s treatises on the fine arts and on education. Source material also included additional related writings by Maritain and pertinent studies on Maritain's philosophy, as prepared by other researchers.
The main body of the study was designed in …
Modification Of Stimulation Seeking Behavior In Psychopaths Using Hypnotic Sensory Imagery Conditioning, Franklin D. Deforest
Modification Of Stimulation Seeking Behavior In Psychopaths Using Hypnotic Sensory Imagery Conditioning, Franklin D. Deforest
Theses and Dissertations
Recent theorizing has postulated that there exists for every individual an optimal level of arousal. Deviations from this optimal state produce discomfort which motivates behaviors aimed at remediation. Potential causes of underarousal include the attenuation of perceptual input and excessively rapid habituation to sensory input. Both of these processes have been linked dynamically to the psychopathic condition. Presumably, in the context of restricted opportunities for involvement in highly stimulating activities, the psychopathic individual attempts to alleviate the stress caused by chronic sensory deprivation through participation in illegal behaviors. The present investigation has attempted to clarify the dynamic picture with regards …

Miniature Mimicry, Claudia J. Berg
Miniature Mimicry, Claudia J. Berg
Theses and Dissertations
Drawn from everyday life, I have moved my images into their own realm. Confining my creatures by scale and composition makes the viewer the dominating element when looking at these prints. By using examples of human activity and emotions, these specimens become examples in miniature of what already exists.

The Transmutation Of Self In Childhood, Craig David Stevens
The Transmutation Of Self In Childhood, Craig David Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gather information regarding children's developing sense of self. Seventy children, ages three to seven years, were tested on three measures. In the first task, the children tried on a mask and answered questions about their identity while looking in a mirror. The second involved a group of conservation tasks where external objects, the child's body, or part thereof, were the objects in question. The third was a picture task where pictures of a person, a person wearing a mask, and an animal were compared and the children were asked to decide which two …

Prenatal Zinc Deficiency And Stress In The Rat, Michael Charles Rowe
Prenatal Zinc Deficiency And Stress In The Rat, Michael Charles Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
The studies presented below concern the effects of stress upon prenatal zinc deficient adult rats. One group of dams was fed a zinc deficient diet from the morning of day 14 to the morning of day 19 of the pregnancy. A second group was given the same amount of food as was eaten by their zinc deficient counterpart (pair-fed) plus water containing 50 ppm zinc, thus they were not zinc deficient but did experience starvation. A third group was fed the diet ad libitum and given the zinc-supplemented water.

Hypnotic Age Regression And The Occurrence Of Transitional Object Relationships, Michael Robert Nash
Hypnotic Age Regression And The Occurrence Of Transitional Object Relationships, Michael Robert Nash
Theses and Dissertations
A transitional object, as defined by object-relation theorists is the first treasured possession of the infant (teddy bear, blanket, etc.) usually first appearing in the second half of the first year, and terminating between the ages of four and six. Object relations theory and subsequent empirical investigations have demonstrated that, for almost all three year old children, the relationship with the transitional object: is spontaneously desired during periods of isolation and mild stress, is characterized by attachment to a specific object, and is affectively intense. The present study used these three characteristics of the three year old child's mode of …

In Vitro Studies On The Methylation Of Dna In Rat Brain And Liver Chromatin, Douglas P. Quick
In Vitro Studies On The Methylation Of Dna In Rat Brain And Liver Chromatin, Douglas P. Quick
Theses and Dissertations
The properties of DNA methyltransferase in various age rats were investigated to better characterize the enzyme. When purified chromatin from 5-day-old rat brain or liver nuclei was incubated with S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-3H]-methionine, 5-[methyl-3H]methyl-cytosine was the only product of methylation. The optimum pH of the DNA methyltransferase was approximately 8.0 with little or no change in activity over a pH range of 6.9 to 8.3. The Km value of the chromosomal bound DNA methyltransferase for S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) was 3.5 ± 0.15 μm and 4.2 ± 0.13 μm, in the liver and brain, respectively. The Vmax values for the enzyme …
