The Iconicity And Non-Arbitrariness Of Body Locations In Four Unrelated Sign Languages, John Samson
The Iconicity And Non-Arbitrariness Of Body Locations In Four Unrelated Sign Languages, John Samson
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I show that universally, there is a strong tendency for signs located on the body to have an iconic or non-arbitrary motivation, especially in their original form. I analyze sign language dictionaries from four unrelated sign languages and establish an iconic or non-arbitrary link between the form of the signs and their meaning, and classify those links according to 8 categories of body location iconicity and 3 categories of non-arbitrariness. The strength of this tendency depends on the percentage of signs that are shown to have an iconic or non-arbitrary link. For the data analyzed here this …
Receiver Apprehension & Listener Style Retention, Karlene T. Clark
Receiver Apprehension & Listener Style Retention, Karlene T. Clark
Librarian Posters and Presentations
Receiver apprehension is the anxiety patrons feel when approaching someone for help. There are different types of ways in which people process information, some of which can be a detriment to the person hoping to learn something or just have a question answered. This presentation looks at the different styles of listeners and how librarians can utilize this knowledge to better meet the needs of patrons coming to the reference desk for assistance.

This spring, the students in UND’s ENGL 414 workshop (The Art of Writing Fiction) read a collection of micro and flash fictions titled Ghosts of You, by Cathy Ulrich. With its use of second person and a penchant for turning tropes of crime fiction on their heads, this book is a must read. Three ENGL 414 students had the opportunity to interview the author via email to discuss Cathy Ulrich’s intentions in Ghosts of You, as well as her own personal writing techniques. To borrow from how each story in Ghosts of You begins, “The thing about being the [interviewer] …

Interpretation of IE data have been carried out by analyzing IE signals in frequency domain to determine the maximum frequency. However, the current peak frequency method can be inaccurate. The purpose of this research is to introduce features in IE signals that can be used for effective classification and interpretation for bridge deck evaluation through statistical analysis and Naive Bayes classifiers. The dataset contained IE data collected from eight slabs created at Advanced Sensing Technology FAST NDE laboratory (FHWA). A set of statistical features in time domain, normalized peak values, and length of preprocessed signals were used to classify the …

Background
Environmental fluctuation during embryonic and fetal development can permanently alter an organism’s morphology, physiology, and behaviour. This phenomenon, known as developmental plasticity, is particularly relevant to reptiles that develop in subterranean nests with variable oxygen tensions. Previous work has shown hypoxia permanently alters the cardiovascular system of snapping turtles and may improve cardiac anoxia tolerance later in life. The mechanisms driving this process are unknown but may involve epigenetic regulation of gene expression via DNA methylation. To test this hypothesis, we assessed in situ cardiac performance during 2 h of acute anoxia in juvenile turtles previously exposed to normoxia …
Comparison Of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Monotherapy And Dual Therapy With Physical Exercise In Mood Disorders, Sean Core
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
It is well known that exercise is an underutilized part of medical care and counseling that is recommended to patients. It is also estimated that roughly 21.4% of the general population will experience a mood disorder in their lifetime (Kessler, 2005). These two components together indicate a strong need to determine the effect that exercise will have on a significant patient population that is encountered in the primary care setting. The purpose of this paper is to look at the comprehensive amount of literature regarding exercise and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) therapies in patients with mood disorders to determine …
Participant Reference In Colombian Sign Language Narrative, Martha Lois Gateley
Participant Reference In Colombian Sign Language Narrative, Martha Lois Gateley
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the research on discourse in sign languages thus far has been carried out on American Sign Language. With this thesis, I add to the current research by comparing what is known about participant reference in American Sign Language with Colombian Sign Language.
This thesis analyzes six separate stories totaling 72 minutes, signed by 5 different native signers of Colombian Sign Language. ELAN (a computer software for annotation) was used to mark all of the referring terms in the subject position and categorize the terms by type (nominal reference, pronominal reference, zero-anaphor, and classifier) and by function (introduction, reintroduction …
The Use Of 19th Century Hairstyling, Techniques, And Products For Theatrical Production, Shelby Hazel
The Use Of 19th Century Hairstyling, Techniques, And Products For Theatrical Production, Shelby Hazel
Theatre Arts Posters and Presentations
Trendy hairstyles and hairstyling techniques have been around for centuries, but have you ever wondered what getting ready in the morning was like for an upper-class woman in the 19th century? These women would spend time getting ready for the day in their dressing room or toilette, where they would pomade, powder, and decorate their hair with elaborate curls and ornaments. A popular style of the 1830s was the a la Chinoise (ah la shen-wahs’). This hairstyle included parting the hair in the middle and pulling it smoothly to the temples where it was arranged in hanging sausage-shaped curls, …
The Use Of Ketamine In Asthma Exacerbations, Stephanie Frentzel
The Use Of Ketamine In Asthma Exacerbations, Stephanie Frentzel
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Asthma is a chronic, non-curable respiratory disease that has multi-factorial effects on the bronchial mucosa. Despite optimal prevention and standardized first-line asthma care, the symptoms can deteriorate, leading to an asthma exacerbation, which is a medical emergency. The purpose of this review was to determine the efficacy of ketamine use as an adjunctive medication for acute asthma exacerbations that had failed standard guideline-directed treatments. Relevant databases included searches looking for ketamine use in asthma. Ketamine can be used as an adjunctive medication and has been found to be beneficial in stopping the emergency's progression by alleviating bronchospasms, increasing oxygen availability, …
Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Health Of American Indians, Heather Bates
Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Health Of American Indians, Heather Bates
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
COVID-19 has been most devastating to the elderly and those living in dense communities, which disproportionately affects American Indians as they are medically underserved. American Indians tend to live in multigenerational housing which puts them at higher risk for transmission of COVID-19. To determine other risk factors and the long-term physical and mental health impacts of COVID-19 on American Indians, a literature review was completed using metaanalyses and case studies. The results of this study confirm that age is the most substantial risk factor for severe COVID-19 illness, complication, and mortality, regardless of race or ethnicity. However, American Indians are …

Bankart Labral Repair Rehabilitation Using Fascial Counterstrain, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, And Range Of Motion: A Case Report, Lauren Mcintosh
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose: This case study will address the use of fascial counterstrain, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), and range of motion (ROM) to rehabilitate an arthroscopic anterior Bankart labrum repair in a pediatric patient. Bankart labral tears are defined as an anteroinferior tear of the labrum, frequently caused by multiple anterior shoulder dislocations. Fascial counterstrain can be used in post-surgical patients to reduce swelling, decrease healing time, and reduce pain. PNF and ROM allow the patient to return to a functional lifestyle and are included in most protocols provided by the surgeon. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate …

Microfilariae (MF) are the immature stages of filarial nematode parasites and inhabit the blood and dermis of all classes of vertebrates, except fish. Concurrent ingestion of MF and arboviruses by mosquitoes can enhance mosquito transmission of virus compared to when virus is ingested alone. Shortly after being ingested, MF penetrate the mosquito’s midgut and may introduce virus into the mosquito’s hemocoel, creating a disseminated viral infection much sooner than normal. This phenomenon is known as microfilarial enhancement. Both American Robins and Common Grackles harbor MF—that is, Eufilaria sp. and Chandlerella quiscali von Linstow (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), respectively. We compared infection and …
