The Child Witness: The Effects Of Videotaped Versus Live Testimony On Juror Perceptions Of Guilt., Sharon Kaye Hagen
The Child Witness: The Effects Of Videotaped Versus Live Testimony On Juror Perceptions Of Guilt., Sharon Kaye Hagen
Theses and Dissertations
A total of 192 jury-qualified subjects participated in this study which compared the effects of a child's videotaped deposition on juror's perceptions of a defendant's guilt to live in-court testimony. A three hour trial, videotaped from a simulated case of child physical use being conducted for the Trial Advocacy Class of the University of North Dakota Law school, was shown to all subjects. A separate deposition of the child's testimony, identical to the live testimony, was also videotaped and shown to half the subjects. Eight juries viewed the videotapes of the trial with the child testifying on the witness stand …

Species- And Tissue-Specific Distribution Of Mitochondrial And Cytoplasmic Isozymes Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase., Thomas John Wiese
Theses and Dissertations
Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), an enzyme which exists as two distinct isozymes, is distributed in a species- and tissue-specific manner. The purpose of this study was to systematically determine the quantity and intracellular location of both isozyme activities of PEPCK in a number of major and important tissues of several species of mammals and birds. Both the intracellular distribution and quantities of both PEPCK isozyme activities were determined in liver, kidney, gastrointestinal mucosa, and adipose tissue; and the total quantity of the enzyme activity was determined in skeletal muscle, brain, spleen, lung, and heart of fed rat and fed and fasted rabbit, …

The Expanding Rol Of The President As Commander-In-Chief Since World War Ii, David E. Kugler
The Expanding Rol Of The President As Commander-In-Chief Since World War Ii, David E. Kugler
Theses and Dissertations
While conflict has always existed between the president and the Congress over war-making roles, the president's Commander-in-Chief role has expanded significantly since World War II. This study examines expansion of presidential power in terms of the establishment of the United States as a world economic and political power and the development of nuclear weapons.
Case studies were selected from each of the administrations from Truman through Reagan to illustrate these points. The Truman administration is studied in terms of the war in Korea and the advent of the limited war concept in a nuclear-powered world.
President Eisenhower's massive retaliation strategy …

Alice L. Milligan: The Celtic Twilight's Forgotten Star, Kathryn J. O'Hehir
Theses and Dissertations
During the course of a historical examination of any given time period, persons and events are remembered in some texts and forgotten in others. The historical process of selection and rejection of materials is, in itself, the subject of much study. This study unearths a forgotten turn of the century Irish patriot named Alice L. Milligan, a Protestant nationalist writer from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
She is worthy of study in that she breaks traditional sectarian lines still drawn in Ireland today, where the stereotype prevails that only Catholics desire a reunited Ireland, with Protestants desiring inclusion with Great Britain. …

Spark Without Flame: The German Library Of Information A Nazi Propaganda Agency In The United States, 1936-1941, Craig S. Olson
Theses and Dissertations
Most studies of Nazi propaganda have focused on main events inside Germany. This thesis proposes to examine German efforts in the United States in the years before American entry into the Second World War. This will be done by examining one Nazi agency: the German Library of Information which operated out of New York City from 1936 to 1941.
The first chapter explores the formation of the German Library of Information and its goals. The question of whether it as controlled by the Foreign Office or the Propaganda Ministry is also discussed.
The second chapter cover the association between the …
Acute Effects Of Smoking On Prose Memory And Physiological Arousal, Scott J. Krebs
Acute Effects Of Smoking On Prose Memory And Physiological Arousal, Scott J. Krebs
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects smoking a cigarette of varying nicotine yields had on physiological arousal and memory for prose passages.
Forty-five male habitual smokers were assigned to either a placebo (0.1mg nicotine cigarette), a 0.7mg, or a 1.5mg nicotine cigarette group. All subjects were in good health, reported that they regularly inhale smoke, that they smoked daily, and have for at least the past 3 months. Subjects smoked their assigned cigarette in a controlled fashion prior to reading 4 prose passages from a computer screen. Immediately after reading each passage, subjects were asked …

Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill
Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill
Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking is a serious health hazard affecting a sizeable proportion of the adult population. The addictive nature of cigarettes has been blamed for the difficulty smokers experience in achieving and maintaining abstinence. Cigarette cravings are frequently cited as a factor contributing to relapse. Addiction theories proposed independently by Wikler, Siegel, and Solomon view cravings as classically conditioned responses to internal or external cues. These responses are presumably multidimensional, having cognitive, emotional, and physiological manifestations.
The current study examined cigarette cravings under controlled laboratory conditions. Forty-six male and female undergraduates served as participants. Stimuli commonly associated with smoking relapse were …

Speech Behavior In Othello: The Conversations Of Roderigo And Iago, Mary Margaret Dahlberg
Speech Behavior In Othello: The Conversations Of Roderigo And Iago, Mary Margaret Dahlberg
Theses and Dissertations
The character Roderigo in William Shakespeare's play Othello is often ignored by critics. Discussion of his role, both in scholarly study and stage portrayal is extremely limited. His lines are spoken almost entirely in dialogue with Iago; he appears to be a mere tool in Iago's evil designs on Cassio and Othello. Yet his conversations with Iago form a subplot which both clarifies Iago's character and aids our understanding of Othello's reponse to Iago's temptations.
The six conversations between Iago and Roderigo are the subject of this paper. Since the two men are not social equals, it seems particularly useful …
Endocrine Regulation Of The Inflammatory Response In The Rat And Photochemical Reactivity Of Aramids., Michael Gene Bouley
Endocrine Regulation Of The Inflammatory Response In The Rat And Photochemical Reactivity Of Aramids., Michael Gene Bouley
Theses and Dissertations
The overall objective of chapter one of this investigation was to determine if glucocorticoids were the endogenous modulators of inflammation. The two specific objectives of this investigation were, (a) to determine if there was a glucocorticoid response during the inhibitory phase of inflammation, and (b) to determine what would be the effects on inflammation if the glucocorticoid response were inhibited. The objectives were carried out using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema as a model for inflammation. The amount of edema formation was determined to be dependent upon the carrageenan dosage. The investigation demonstrated that the injection of carrageenan into the hind paw …

Graphics In Grain : A Study Of The Crop Circles Phenomenon, Brian Kosobud
Graphics In Grain : A Study Of The Crop Circles Phenomenon, Brian Kosobud
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
For several years, mysterious crop circle formations have been found in fields around the world, most especially England, The formations, sharp-edged geometric patterns of flattened field grains, are increasing both in number and complexity each year. Several groups and individuals have begun serious includes into the method of their construction. While numerous different; hypotheses regarding their origi11s have surfaced, no single answer has been universally accepted.
The purpose of this paper is not to provide an answer to this enigma; that; is impossible at this time. Rather, this paper is to serve as an introduction into the study of crop …
Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright
Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright
Theses and Dissertations
This laboratory has observed significantly different survival rates for male balb/c mice maintained on different diets following infection with herpes simplex virus type I (HSV). The two diets, presumably nutritionally complete, are Purina, an undefined laboratory chow, and Teklad, a defined zinc control diet. This investigation examined the effect of these diets on the production of interferon, anti-HSV antibodies and peritoneal macrophage activity. Animals maintained for five weeks on each of the diets remained healthy, and no visible differences were apparent. Food intake and growth rates were equivalent for the diet groups. The concentration of virus in various organs was …

Autonomic Nervous System Activity And The Perception Of Arousal In Dietary Restrainers And Nonrestrainers., Donald Wayne Preussler
Autonomic Nervous System Activity And The Perception Of Arousal In Dietary Restrainers And Nonrestrainers., Donald Wayne Preussler
Theses and Dissertations
The reasons why some people eat more than others, have more body fat, or develop some type of eating disorder have been related to the concepts of hunger/satiety, appetite, and their underlying mechanisms. Research has focused on both physiological and cognitive factors related to the regulation of eating behavior. The role of the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamic nuclei with putative connections to the autonomic nervous system has been extensively studied. Further, the construct of dietary restraint argues that cognitive factors play a role in the regulation of eating behavior. Few studies have examined the possible role of the hypothalamically mediated …

Effects Of Vasopressin On The Comprehension And Recall Of Prose Passages., Timothy Paul Tinius
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of treatment with DDAVP, a vasopressin analogue, on arousal, short-term memory (STM), and the comprehension and recall of expository and narrative prose passages was examined. Poor and good readers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: no treatment, placebo, or DDAVP. The digit span and reading span tests were used as measures of STM. Blood pressure and heart rate were used as measures of physiological arousal. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Activation-Deactivation Adjective Check List were used as measures of self-reported arousal. The passages were presented one idea unit at a time on an Apple computer screen. …
