Parables For Long Knives. (Original Writing)., Gordon Donald Henry Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Parables for Long Knives is a creative work which includes short stories, poems, mini-dramas and farcical essays on life in a mythological American Indian community in the Midwest. The work finds literary direction from Native oral traditions and culture, Midwest tribal histories, contemporary tribal issues and lifestyle, and personal experiences in Indian and non-Indian communities. In addition, parts of this work employ oblique allusions to American and English literature past and present.

The Motivations For Meaning: A Study Of Persuasive Appeals In Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Lawrence Arthur Lannoo May 1993

The Motivations For Meaning: A Study Of Persuasive Appeals In Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Lawrence Arthur Lannoo

Theses and Dissertations

In 1976, one of the most violent and controversial films of that decade was released in American movie theaters. The film, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, was heralded by some film scholars as a masterpiece.

However, others criticized the film for its graphic presentation of urban violence. This criticism intensified when John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981, apparently motivated by his love for a character in the film, played by Jodie Foster.

The director of Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese, responded to the criticisms of the violence in his film. He suggested that he was not trying …

A Comparative Character Analysis Of Ruth And Kate In Harold Pinter's The Homecoming And Old Times: The Issues Of Need, Possession And Power, Daniel K. Dammel

Theses and Dissertations

In comparing Ruth of Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming and Kate of Pinter’s Old Times, it was necessary to analyze the women individually within the context of their respective plays. The focus of each distinct analysis is on the issues of need, possession and power, which are prevalent in both plays. Both Ruth and Kate elicit need in the other characters of their respective plays. The needs that Ruth and Kate evoke, and the process through which they elicit these needs were examined. Motivated by the needs Ruth and Kate elicit, the characters surrounding the women attempt to possess them. As …

Theses and Dissertations

In an examination of heterosexual college students' knowledge, attitudes, risk perception, and behavior as they relate to the prevention of AIDS in this population, the present study included two separate but related studies. The first study examined midwestern heterosexual students': (a) knowledge of HIV risk factors; (b) attitudes toward homosexuality, AIDS, and mandatory HIV testing; (c) sexual and other risk behavior; and (d) self-perception of risk for exposure to HIV. Students (N = 308) completed an assessment battery that included the AIDS Risk Behavior Knowledge Test, the AIDS Attitude Scale, the Sexual Risk Behavior Questionnaire, and a background questionnaire which …

The Effects Of Age And Sense Of Coherence On Bereavement Outcome., Michelle Marie Micsko Feb 1993

The Effects Of Age And Sense Of Coherence On Bereavement Outcome., Michelle Marie Micsko

Theses and Dissertations

An important component of hospice programs is providing ongoing support to bereaved individuals. Bereaved, who receive organized support following the death of a loved one, have better bereavement outcomes than individuals who do not receive organized support. Many risk factors relating to characteristics of individuals might place them at risk for experiencing a pathological bereavement reaction following the death of their spouse such as the nature of the relationship they had with the deceased, nature of the death of the deceased, behaviors and attitudes appearing early in the grieving process, and specific characteristics of the bereaved individuals. Hence, in identifying …

The Hakluyt Stage: Travel, Narcissism, And The Narrative., Thomas Palakeel Jan 1993

The Hakluyt Stage: Travel, Narcissism, And The Narrative., Thomas Palakeel

Theses and Dissertations

In this quincentenary year of the Columbus landfall, as the theorists debate the limitations of Western civilization, my dissertation critiques the narratives collected by Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) who sought to enter the geographical and ethnographic discourse of the late Renaissance by inscribing the emergent English nation as the custodian of modern civilization. The English rhetoric of civility in the New World has taken the form of a series of monologic narratives, forced inscriptions that seek to normalize the history of colonization, slavery, and imperialism. My study of the narratives in Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (1598) reveals the cultural narcissism of the English …

Obligatory Dative Clitic Doubling In Spanish, Karol Joy Hardin Jan 1993

Obligatory Dative Clitic Doubling In Spanish, Karol Joy Hardin

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This study investigates the phenomenon of obligatory dative doubling, examining data based upon a critique of two analyses of clitic doubling in Spanish within different grammatical frameworks. Previous analyses propose that dative clitic doubling is obligatory whenever the NP in indirect object position is not a semantic Recipient/Addressee (Goal). J. Albert Bickford's (1985) proposal within Relational Grammar and Osvaldo Jaeggli's (1982) account within Government and Binding are two representative analyses of the phenomenon which argue that conditions for doubling are based upon the thematic role of the superficial indirect object NP. Due to an incomplete corpus of …

Cigarette Smoking And Low Back Pain, Cindy G. Broden Jan 1993

Cigarette Smoking And Low Back Pain, Cindy G. Broden

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this independent study is to define presently existing theories linking cigarette smoking and low back pain. It also provides a detailed description of nicotine and its physiological and psychological effects.

There are four theories outlined in this study which could serve as explanations for the correlation of cigarette smoking and low back pain. The first is the chronic cough associated with smoking. This cough increases mechanical stress including higher disc pressures and poor union and healing following spinal fusion surgery. The second theory deals with the vascular changes caused by nicotine which decreases vertebral blood flow and …

Vertebral Subluxation Complex, Debbie L. Horn Jan 1993

Vertebral Subluxation Complex, Debbie L. Horn

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

At one time or another most adults have back pain. Despite the fact that back pain is as prevalent as the common cold, it has been as puzzling as the Bermuda Triangle. The primary problem is that in many patients it is not possible to identify the cause of symptoms, particularly if the symptoms are relatively minor. A review of literature reveals a wide variety of single causative lesions which would adequately encompass the various symptoms encountered. However, they are complex conditions which are highly oversimplified. This problem was recognized by Renaissance International who presented the concept of the Vertebral …

Applied Anatomy And Biomechanics Of The Scapula, Garrett T.K. Kennedy Jan 1993

Applied Anatomy And Biomechanics Of The Scapula, Garrett T.K. Kennedy

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The scapula is the first link in the upper extremity kinetic chain. Analysis of the applied anatomy and biomechanics of the scapular link allows the physical therapist to develop pathomechanical models for shoulder injuries. The current health care trend of developing rehabilitation protocols based on sound anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical principles necessitates a strong background in the structure and function of the shoulder.

The purpose of this review of the literature is to provide a compilation of information regarding scapular anatomy and function. The paper is organized into four chapters. Chapter one discusses the phylogenetic and embryological development of the …

Electrical Stimulation As An Adjunct To Healing, Mary J. Lee Jan 1993

Electrical Stimulation As An Adjunct To Healing, Mary J. Lee

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this overview is to offer a possible avenue for advancing wound or ulcer healing when working with a population who experience complications of skin healing. In respect to their normal functional activities, these persons will experience limitations, and will also require more utilization of medical resources to assist in their progress. Dermal ulcers may predispose them to even further complications. There are many factors which influence the healing rate. Low voltage current and, more recently, the use of high voltage pulsed current, has been researched to serve as an additional treatment possibility for improved skin status.

The Intervertebral Disc And Low Back Pain, Bruce H. Wessman Jan 1993

The Intervertebral Disc And Low Back Pain, Bruce H. Wessman

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Low back pain has an enormous socioeconomic impact in this country. Even with advancement in diagnostic technology, the incidence and severity of low back pain continues to increase. The intervertebral disc plays an important causative role in the production of low back pain. The intervertebral disc may cause direct discogenic pain by mechanical and/or chemical irritation of the nociceptor receptors found within the outer one-third of the annulus fibrosis, or cause back pain by an indirect method. The incidence of low back pain is first reported around the age of 25 and is most prevalent from ages 35-60. It is …

Seri Kinship Terminology, Mary B. Moser, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1993

Seri Kinship Terminology, Mary B. Moser, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The Seri language contains over fifty kinship terms, and as such represents one of the most highly elaborated kinship systems described to date. A list of these terms was given in Kroeber 1931, although Kroeber's list was (understandably) incorrect in certain ways. Our discussion of the Seri kinship terminology centers around, but is not limited to, the set of obligatorily possessed noun stems which are inflected with the following possessive prefixes. [...]

"This paper is organized as follows. In Section 2 we discuss various kinds of terms which, although used to refer to kinsmen, are special in …

Quiegolani Zapotec Phonology, Susan Regnier Jan 1993

Quiegolani Zapotec Phonology, Susan Regnier

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Quiegolani Zapotec (henceforth QZ) words contain initial consonant clusters of two or even three consonants and most of these consonant clusters show a decreasing slope of sonority. This violates sonority constraints proposed by Greenberg in 1978 and further discussed by Bell and Saka (1983). This, however, is understandable when viewed from a diachronic perspective. This will be discussed in section 6.4.

"Further, QZ, like most Zapotec languages, has a lenis-fortis distinction among some of its consonants. However, this distinction is less clear in QZ than in other Zapotec languages and carries a lower functional load."

A Comparison Of Concentric And Eccentric Resistance Training On Muscle Hypertrophy, Mark A. Romanick Jan 1993

A Comparison Of Concentric And Eccentric Resistance Training On Muscle Hypertrophy, Mark A. Romanick

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

This study was undertaken to determine whether concentric or eccentric muscle action was more likely to induce muscle hypertrophy when exposed to a prolonged heavy resistance exercise program. Fifteen males and 14 females who were not currently or recently involved in a heavy resistance training program for the lower extremities were selected for the study. One group (n = 10) exercised in a concentric fashion, another group (n = 9) exercised in an eccentric fashion, and a third group (n = 10) served as a control group, performing no resistive exercise. The exercising subjects performed three sets of 10 repetitions …
