Nitric Oxide's Involvement In The Biphasic Effects Of The Endothelins On Prolactin Release., Debra Ann Schell
Nitric Oxide's Involvement In The Biphasic Effects Of The Endothelins On Prolactin Release., Debra Ann Schell
Theses and Dissertations
Endothelins (ET) are potent vasoactive peptides that are produced in brain and pituitary gland. They exert significant biphasic effects on prolactin release via direct pituitary actions. Endothelins are potent activators of nitric oxide synthase in tissues, such as vasculature and certain neuronal systems. This project tested the hypothesis that the pituitary effects of the endothelins on prolactin release are mediated through the generation of nitric oxide within the anterior pituitary gland via nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Experiments involved the measurement of nitric oxide synthase activity in dispersed anterior pituitary cells by measuring the accumulation of $\sp3$H-L-citrulline from $\sp3$H-L-arginine added to incubations …

Temporal Relationship Of Stress, Cognitive Appraisal, Coping, Mood, And Menstrual Phase To Migraine Headache Activity., Cami R. Lokken
Temporal Relationship Of Stress, Cognitive Appraisal, Coping, Mood, And Menstrual Phase To Migraine Headache Activity., Cami R. Lokken
Theses and Dissertations
Migraines in women are often thought to be associated with their menstrual cycle, just as stress, appraisal, and coping are often thought to play an important role in the development and/or exacerbation of migraines. However, little is known about temporal aspects of these relationships. While a few studies have addressed the temporal issue with subsets of these variables, most studies have relied on global, retrospective assessments, rather than daily, longitudinal, prospective methods of measurement. The present study asked 20 women with migraines to monitor their headaches, stressful events, appraisal, coping, mood, and menstrual phase daily for two months. Each subject's data …
Hemoglobin Adducts, Dna Adducts, P53 Gene Mutations And Aberrant Crypts Caused By 2-Aminofluorene And/Or 3,2'-Dimethyl-4-Aminobiphenyl In Rapid And Slow Acetylator Syrian Hamsters Congenic At The Nat2 Locus., Yi Feng
Theses and Dissertations
The acetylation polymorphism in humans and many other mammals is regulated by a single gene (NAT2) encoding for a polymorphic acetyltransferase (NAT2, E.C.2.3.1.5.). Humans and hamsters segregate into rapid, intermediate, or slow acetylator phenotypes. Human epidemiological studies have suggested that acetylator phenotype is associated with higher incidence towards certain cancers, particularly in individuals exposed to high levels of carcinogenic arylamines. In order to investigate the role of the NAT2 gene in arylamine carcinogenesis, hemoglobin and DNA adducts, p53 gene mutations, and aberrant crypt formation in colon were studied in rapid and slow acetylator Syrian hamsters congenic at the NAT2 gene …

Forty five survivors of severe (n=15), moderate (n=15) and mild (n=15) closed head injury were compared with age and education matched controls (n=15) on the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS). On CVLT learning trials, head injured groups recalled less than controls, with the severely …
Examination Of The Putative Glucose-6-Phosphate Translocase Component, T(1), Of The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System., James Darren Foster
Examination Of The Putative Glucose-6-Phosphate Translocase Component, T(1), Of The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System., James Darren Foster
Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase is proposed to be a system consisting of at least six components--a catalytic unit (scD-glucose-6-phosphate phosphohydrolase; EC 3.1.3.9), a stabilizing protein, and four or more specific substrate translocases, termed $\rm T\sb1$ (glucose-6-phosphate transport), $\rm T\sb2\beta$ (carbamyl phosphate, inorganic phosphate, and inorganic pyrophosphate transport), $\rm T\sb2\alpha$ (inorganic phosphate transport), and $\rm T\sb3$ (glucose transport). Several of these components have been identified and characterized, but $\rm T\sb1,$ the putative glucose-6-phosphate translocase, has not. Identification and characterization of $\rm T\sb1$ would support the current multicomponent model of the system, and substantiate the existence of a critical component of the system …
Cytoskeletal And Morphological Characterization Of Mitosis In The Cultured Adult Newt Ventricular Myocyte., Donald Gregory Matz
Cytoskeletal And Morphological Characterization Of Mitosis In The Cultured Adult Newt Ventricular Myocyte., Donald Gregory Matz
Theses and Dissertations
The cultured adult newt ventricular myocyte has been shown to undergo mitosis and cytokinesis in a fully differentiated state. A more complete insight into its proliferation and cellular changes in regeneration involves a better understanding of its morphology and cytoskeletal changes during mitotic events. The major advantage of cell culture of the newt cardiac myocyte is that it exhibits large chromosomes, making mitosis in myocytes easily observed by phase-contrast, epifluorescence and electron microscopy. In the present study, ventricles were enzymatically dissociated and myocardial cells were cultured on laminin-coated dishes or glass coverslips. Myocyte cultures fed modified L-15/10% FBS every other day …
The Effects Of Nicotine And Nicotine Withdrawal On Memory For Prose., Scott Joseph Krebs
The Effects Of Nicotine And Nicotine Withdrawal On Memory For Prose., Scott Joseph Krebs
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the effects nicotine and withdrawal from nicotine had on memory for prose passages. Previous research has indicated that nicotine either enhances, impairs, or has no effect on memory. The present study was an attempt to clarify some of these findings.Six groups of subjects were used, including one group who were not regular smokers, and five groups of regular smokers. All subjects were matched on verbal ability and trait arousal levels. The smoking subjects were matched on habitual nicotine consumption levels and length of smoking history and either smoked a nicotine-containing cigarette (0.1mg, 0.7mg, or 1.5mg) or …

Spontaneous Luteolysis In The Cyclic Golden Hamster: Evidence For Mediation Through Inflammation And Apoptosis, Mark W. Rodacker
Spontaneous Luteolysis In The Cyclic Golden Hamster: Evidence For Mediation Through Inflammation And Apoptosis, Mark W. Rodacker
Theses and Dissertations
Mammalian corpora lutea (CL) are transient ovarian glands which function to support pregnancy by secretion of progesterone (P). Sustained P secretion during pregnancy in the hamster requires gonadotrophic support, i.e., follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin (Prl). Infertile cycles require CL regression. In luteolysis, CL first regress functionally (FL) and then structurally (SL). FL permits the next estrous. Estrous occurs every fourth day in the hamster such that CL form, function briefly, and then regress rapidly and completely. With only one generation of CL present in each ovary at any one time, the hamster is an ideal model for studying …
Interactions Between Enzymes Metabolizing Oxaloacetate And Phosphoenolpyruvate In Rabbit Liver Cytosol., Joseph John Provost
Interactions Between Enzymes Metabolizing Oxaloacetate And Phosphoenolpyruvate In Rabbit Liver Cytosol., Joseph John Provost
Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic protein-protein interactions may be a basis for regulation of enzymes that share cross-road metabolites. This type of control could direct metabolites through different pathways depending on which groups of enzymes are associated. Enzymes at the point of convergence of gluconeogenesis, glycolysis and the aspartate-malate shuttle were investigated for interactions. Phosphoenolpyruvate is a product of enolase and a substrate for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, and pyruvate kinase. Oxalacetate is shared with malate dehydrogenase, aspartate transaminase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. Guanine nucleotides are shared between nucleoside diphosphate kinase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. The rabbit liver cytosolic enzymes mentioned above were either purified or commercially purchased to …

Madija Predicates, Pamela S. Wright
Madija Predicates, Pamela S. Wright
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
This article examines several previously-unexplained aspects of verbal morphology and syntax in Madija, an Arauan language spoken in Peru and Brazil. These include the distribution of an auxiliary verb which occurs with some predicates but not with others, the factors determining the choice among three different affixes marking third person agreement, and three different affixes indicating a plural subject.
Using the framework of Relational Grammar, a unified analysis of Madija predicate classes and verbal morphology can be given. This provides further evidence for such proposals as the Unaccusative Hypothesis, Postal's proposed analysis for antipassive, the analysis of impersonal constructions as …
A Differential Overview Of Self-Directed Low Back Exercise Programs, Micheal G. Bateman
A Differential Overview Of Self-Directed Low Back Exercise Programs, Micheal G. Bateman
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Patients with low back pain represent a large percentage of the population frequenting today's clinics. Despite the high prevalence of low back pain in today's clinical setting, it is considered one of the most difficult diagnoses to treat. While practitioners in the field of physical therapy employ a diversity of evaluation and treatment techniques, they all share one common denominator, the goal of limiting pain while improving function and quality of life. Many therapists subscribe to a treatment approach which involves the patient in active individualized self-treatment exercises. Controversy exists as to which treatment approach is most effective and whether …
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Bryan L. Guthmiller
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Bryan L. Guthmiller
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Delayed-onset muscular soreness (DOMS), the sensation of pain and stiffness in the muscles that occurs from 1-5 days following unaccustomed exercise, can adversely affect muscle performance, both from voluntary reduction of effort and from inherent loss of capacity of the muscles to produce force. This exercise-induced muscle damage causes a response that can be characterized by a cascade of metabolic events. Increased circulating neutrophils and interleukin-1 occurs within 24 hours after the exercise, with skeletal muscle levels remaining elevated for a much longer time. Several theories underlying the physiological mechanisms of DOMS have been proposed. The majority of evidence contradicts …
Ergogenic Aids For Athletes, Eric Kamimura
Ergogenic Aids For Athletes, Eric Kamimura
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The use of ergogenic aids is widespread, with users ranging from recreational to professional athletes. Perhaps the Olympics has received more publicity regarding the use of ergogenic aids than any other athletic event.
It is widely understood that anabolic steroids and other drugs can be very dangerous. As a result, more and more athletes are seeking safer alternative methods in order to enhance athletic performance. With this attitude, a number of athletes are purchasing protein, multi vitamin/mineral, and carbohydrate supplements as well as other ergogenic aids in the belief that these supplements will improve their athletic performance. However, some of …
