"Now She Understood": Free Indirect Discourse And Its Effects, Mary Margaret Dahlberg Dec 1996

"Now She Understood": Free Indirect Discourse And Its Effects, Mary Margaret Dahlberg

Theses and Dissertations

While the discussion of Free Indirect Discourse is limited almost entirely to the twentieth, century, the technique has been used by writers from a variety of periods throughout literary history. Its effects vary, depending on the strength of the narrative voice and whether it is used to represent speech or thought. The first essay in this dissertation examines free indirect thought as it emerges in Chaucer's Troylus and Criseyde, Lyly's Euphues, and Gascoigne's Adventures of Master F.J. The effect in this early period seems to be primarily dramatic, a finding supported by further discussion of a prototype form identified in …

A Descriptive Study Of Preschool Children Learning Through Shared Activity, Carol Lynn Enger Dec 1996

A Descriptive Study Of Preschool Children Learning Through Shared Activity, Carol Lynn Enger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of how preschool children learn from other children in shared activities. Shared activities provide opportunities for children to assist each other in a meaningful social context. The question directing the study was: how do preschool children assist other children to learn in teacher designed learning centers and in child directed free play activities?

In order to discover how and when children are learning from other children, an observational study of one universtiy campus child care center was conducted over a period of seven months. Initial investigations included observations of …

Status Passage Of The Science Fiction Fan: Becoming A Member Of The Science Fiction Fan Subculture, B. Diane Miller Dec 1996

Status Passage Of The Science Fiction Fan: Becoming A Member Of The Science Fiction Fan Subculture, B. Diane Miller

Theses and Dissertations

In the 1930's a middle class subculture developed around the popular culture genre literature known as science fiction. This subculture calls itself "Fandom" (Sanders, 1994; Bloch, 1962). I have chosen to investigate the status passage of the science fiction fan (Glaser and Strauss, 1971); or to phrase this as a question: What is the process of becoming a member of the subculture of science fiction fandom? Throughout this monograph, I refer to the members of the science fiction fan subculture as SF Fandom to distinguish them from other “fandoms” that have grown and branched off from the original group.

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study responses on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS- SF), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) were compared in 1,617 college undergraduates. Also, the "eveningness-morningness" dimension, as measured by the Horne and Ostberg guestionnaire (H&O), was examined among the "probably" depressed student population. In addition, the impact of the "probable" depression on performance on various memory tests at different times of day was investigated. Finally, performance of the "probably" depressed students was compared with performance of the nondepressed students. In the first part of the study 1,617 undergraduates were surveyed and 136 …

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen Aug 1996

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Adriamycin is an important anticancer agent. However, the clinical use of Adriamycin is limited by its undesirable side effects, especially cardiotoxicity. One of the most likely mechanisms of Adriamycin toxicity is the production of reactive oxygen free radicals. Catalase is a major enzyme involved in detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H202) in mammalian cells. It has been shown that catalase activity per g tissue of the heart is very low in comparison to other tissues, being only about 2% that of liver in the mouse. This less proficient ability to dispose of reactive oxygen species may be responsible for the high …

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch Jul 1996

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a key gluconeogenic enzyme. In gluconeogenic tissues, cytosolic PEPCK is essential for glucose formation whereas no metabolic role is defined for mitochondrial PEPCK. Large amounts of PEPCK activity are present in the mucosa of small intestine from rabbits although this tissue is not known to be a significant site for gluconeogenesis in adult animals. Thus the intent of the project was to investigate the intracellular distribution and role of PEPCK in rabbit enterocytes from the small intestine.Initially, a procedure was developed to isolate viable enterocytes from the small intestine of rabbits for use in enzyme and …

Influence Of Supplemental Food For Striped Skunks On Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North Dakota, Donovan G. Pietruszewski May 1996

Influence Of Supplemental Food For Striped Skunks On Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North Dakota, Donovan G. Pietruszewski

Theses and Dissertations

Predation on clutches of upland nesting ducks has been implicated as a major cause of low duck production in the Prairie Pothole Region. Management techniques that reduce predation rates and are socially acceptable are of interest to wildlife managers. This thesis examines differences in nest success of upland nesting ducks in areas where supplemental food was provided (treatment areas) for striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) compared to areas where supplemental food was not provided (control areas). Differences in nest success between areas occupied by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and coyotes (Canis latrans) were also examined. The study was conducted from 1993-94 …

Statistical Comparison And Evaluation Of Analytical Techniques For Measurement Of Trace Elements In Coal, Catherine A. O'Keefe May 1996

Statistical Comparison And Evaluation Of Analytical Techniques For Measurement Of Trace Elements In Coal, Catherine A. O'Keefe

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid technological advances in industry, transportation, energy production, and agriculture have resulted in increased environmental pollution of toxic materials. Following the passage of federal pollution regulations beginning with the first Clean Air Act Amendments in 1977, industry has become more aware of the environmental consequences of these technological advances. In recent years, there has been an increased effort to improve the quality of life by minimizing pollution on a global scale.

The utilization of fossil fuels is one source of toxic materials in the environment. A necessary step to understanding the emissions of toxic metals from combustion and gasification of …

Ecology Of The Northern Badlands Elk Herd, Alan Strassler May 1996

Ecology Of The Northern Badlands Elk Herd, Alan Strassler

Theses and Dissertations

The current population of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) in the northern badlands of North Dakota originated from a accidental release in 1977. Efforts to manage the elk population in the northern badlands have been hindered for a number of reasons 1) the census data from fixed-wing aircraft does not adequately determine population sizes in forested areas with low numbers of individuals and herds, 2) habitat use and seasonal home range of elk in this region have not been identified.

The objectives of this study were to determine for the northern badlands elk herd: 1) the movement patterns and …

An Exploration Of Teasing: A Case Study Of Three Elementary School Students., Sharon Lynn Branvold Jan 1996

An Exploration Of Teasing: A Case Study Of Three Elementary School Students., Sharon Lynn Branvold

Theses and Dissertations

While teasing is one of the perpetual problems of the classroom and the schoolyard, there is little understanding of the dynamics of this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to better understand the dynamics of teasing within the school environment. This study was qualitative in nature. The study explored the teasing experiences of three elementary school children by addressing issues such as what was the meaning that children assigned to the interactions labeled teasing? How they understood what was happening to them?Three students were identified as victims of teasing and were observed on the playground and in the classroom. They …

A Backwards Binding Construction In Zapotec, Cheryl A. Black Jan 1996

A Backwards Binding Construction In Zapotec, Cheryl A. Black

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Many of the Zapotecan languages have a unique way of signalling coreference between the subject and the possessor of the object: the subject is null. Such a construction is upsidedown or backwards from commonly described anaphora constructions and its analysis is therefore problematic to current theories. This paper describes the construction and underlines the theoretical problem by arguing against any obvious alternative analyses. An analysis is proposed where it is the tail (rather than the head) of the chain of coreferent elements that is identified, suggesting that this is another place where parameterization is needed.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Physical Therapy Implications And Treatment Strategies, Mary L. Emerson Jan 1996

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Physical Therapy Implications And Treatment Strategies, Mary L. Emerson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) describes physical and neurological (motor, cognitive, and behavioral) deficits that result from maternal alcohol intake during pregnancy. FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation and birth defects in the U.S., ahead of spina bifida, fragile X syndrome, and down's syndrome. The incidence of FAS increased more than three-fold from 1979 to 1992; this increasing incidence rate, enhances the importance of the Physical Therapists' role in early recognition and intervention of FAS. A review of current F AS research studies, reveals a need for additional resource information on FAS, regarding implications for Physical Therapy and possible …

Meniscal Substitution: A Literature Review, Kerry L. Muir Jan 1996

Meniscal Substitution: A Literature Review, Kerry L. Muir

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

With the increased awareness that meniscectomy results in degenerative changes in the knee joint, research is now aimed at substituting the meniscus that had been previously removed. Surgical attempts at replacing the meniscus include the use of autografts, allografts, and artificial synthetic prosthesis.

This paper will review the available literature regarding each type of meniscal substitute. Surgical procedures, results, and considerations relating to the different substitutes will be examined.

While studies indicate that meniscal transplantation is technically feasible, the long-term results are unknown. More research is necessary to determine if meniscal substitutes can survive for a prolonged time and function …

The Effects Of Botulinum Toxin Injections On Function In Patients With Spasticity, Leann Pippen Jan 1996

The Effects Of Botulinum Toxin Injections On Function In Patients With Spasticity, Leann Pippen

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Spasticity can be one of the most challenging problems for patients with neurologic conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, etc. It can lead to a wide variety of problems including decreased mobility, decreased quality of movement, interference with normal postural reactions, interference with functional activities, and pressure sores. Therefore, the medical community has focused on effective treatments for spasticity which do not produce overwhelming weakness, spasticity, paralysis, fatigue, and/or muscle atrophy. Since the late 1970's, the use of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) injections to decrease spasticity has been investigated.

The purpose of …

Mary Wilkins Freeman's Treatment Of Race, Children, And Women In Light Of Ethical Criticism., Hazel Retzlaff Jan 1996

Mary Wilkins Freeman's Treatment Of Race, Children, And Women In Light Of Ethical Criticism., Hazel Retzlaff

Theses and Dissertations

Freeman's critical reputation was determined by cultural definitions of women, and women writers, just as her portrayals of race, children, and women in the short stories, novels, and plays place her in the cultural context of her time. After virtual critical neglect from 1930-1975, there is a revival of interest in her writing--evidenced by a full-length study, a collection of criticism, a collection of her previously uncollected stories, and numerous articles. This renewed conversation about Freeman's work provides the impetus to evaluate the effect of her fiction on her own time and on present readers, ethical criticism as practiced by …
