The Characterization Of The Expression And The Function Of Slrps In The Human Sclera., Janell Mae Johnson Feb 2003

The Characterization Of The Expression And The Function Of Slrps In The Human Sclera., Janell Mae Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The collagenous network of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contributes to the strength and organization of connective tissues. Interspersed among this collagenous network, are a number of tissue specific proteoglycans (PG's) that are thought to guide matrix assembly and organization through protein/protein and/or protein/carbohydrate interactions. In recent literature, attention has been focused on a small leucine rich PG family (SLRPS) found to bind a variety of ECM components via their core proteins. The family is made up of nine members including: decorin, biglycan, lumican, fibromodulin, proline arginine end leucine rich repeat protein (PRELP), keratocan, chondroadherin, epiphycan, and osteoglycin. Recent studies have …

The Portrayal Of People With Mental Retardation In Contemporary Children's Literature., Linda Noel Blackston Marsh Feb 2003

The Portrayal Of People With Mental Retardation In Contemporary Children's Literature., Linda Noel Blackston Marsh

Theses and Dissertations

Literature plays an important role in the social development of children by encouraging them to become responsive to the feelings of others and encouraging positive attitudes toward individuals with mental retardation. Responsive, positive attitudes toward people with mental retardation can be developed vicariously through well-chosen children's literature. Because of the inclusion of children with mental retardation into the general education classroom and an increased awareness of the importance of recognizing the diversity among us, more books that foster an understanding of people with mental retardation and emphasize each person as a unique individual are needed. The researcher analyzed the portrayal …

Control Of Type Iii Secretion In Yersinia Pestis By The Negative Regulator, Lcrg., Jyl S. Matson Feb 2003

Control Of Type Iii Secretion In Yersinia Pestis By The Negative Regulator, Lcrg., Jyl S. Matson

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of bubonic plague, downregulates the host immune response using a type III secretion system. The activity of the type III secretion system of Y. pestis is regulated by several proteins, including the negative secretion regulator, LcrG. LcrG has been proposed to block the secretion apparatus from the cytoplasmic face of the inner membrane under conditions that do not favor Yops secretion. LcrG has been demonstrated to interact and form a stable complex with a positive regulator of secretion, LcrV. Under secretion-permissive conditions, it is thought that increased levels of LcrV titrate LcrG away from the …

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall Jan 2003

Piano Letters., Scott Ronald Randall

Theses and Dissertations

In preparing this work of fiction, the author examined how characters used storytelling and acts of imagination to create their own lives. The two central characters of this work come to know one another largely through the sharing of memory and their shared imaginings, and their eventual union is a coming together of their individual stories. The text includes twelve short stories that may either be read as independent works or as a sustained whole.

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin Jan 2003

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in scleral extracellular matrix, which is composed of proteins including glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and collagen, allow axial elongation of the eye resulting in myopia. Theoretically, changes in any scleral component could result in changes leading to increased axial length. The purpose of this study is to characterize and study the function of one protein found in scleral extracellular matrix, lumican.

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond Jan 2003

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

The location and function of the electron transport chain render the mitochondria the primary source for potentially damaging reactive oxygen species in aerobic cells. Normally, the concentration of superoxide anion in mitochondria is controlled, at least in part, by the sequential action of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. However, when the terminal steps of the electron transport are impaired or inhibited, superoxide anion production may rise to levels that overwhelm the normal protective enzymes. Studies have shown that copper deficiency causes a reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c oxidase, the copper dependent, terminal respiratory complex of the electron transport chain. …

Thirty Endangered Languages In The Philippines, Thomas N. Headland Jan 2003

Thirty Endangered Languages In The Philippines, Thomas N. Headland

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

There are 6,809 languages spoken in the world today. Conservative estimates are that the world's languages are currently dying at the rate of at least two languages each month, and linguists predict that most of today's languages will die out in the next 100 years. Since 1962, the author has been gathering field data on some of the smallest language groups in the world-the Philippine Negritos. This paper will explain why the thirty-plus Negrito languages in the Philippines are endangered, and what the projected future is for these numerically tiny post-foraging societies in the 21st century. The argument will be …

Lexical Comparisons Of Signed Languages And The Effects Of Iconicity, Stephen J. Parkhurst, Dianne Parkhurst Jan 2003

Lexical Comparisons Of Signed Languages And The Effects Of Iconicity, Stephen J. Parkhurst, Dianne Parkhurst

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Lexical comparisons of signed languages present new methodological challenges not found in comparisons of spoken languages. Two standards for comparing wordlists are examined using a sample of four European sign languages that are not known to be related to each other and a second sample of different dialects of the signed languages of Spain. The use of different standards is shown to affect the numerical results; comparing signs on the basis of probable historical relatedness typically yields percentages that are 5-10% greater than comparisons on the basis of similarity. The amount of iconicity inherent in signed languages affects the wordlist …
