Forecasting The Vitality Of The Fur Language: A Study In Language Use Patterns And Attitudes In Darfur, Kerry Mae Corbett Jul 2012

Forecasting The Vitality Of The Fur Language: A Study In Language Use Patterns And Attitudes In Darfur, Kerry Mae Corbett

Theses and Dissertations

The Fur language of Darfur, Sudan has been undergoing a decades-long language shift to the more dominant and prestigious Arabic spoken throughout the country. However, a decade of conflict in Darfur has brought greater awareness of ethnic identity and disrupted the previously-documented language shift. Using questionnaires, this study explores the current language use patterns and attitudes of 286 individuals in two towns and four Internally Displaced People camps in Darfur. It uses interviews to further explore language attitudes. The research shows that demographic variables such as gender, age, and level of education affect language use and attitudes and confirms that …

Comparing The Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Of Native Americans And Non-Native Americans, Franklin Sage May 2012

Comparing The Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Of Native Americans And Non-Native Americans, Franklin Sage

Theses and Dissertations

Are Native Americans different from non-Native Americans when it comes to environmental attitudes and behaviors? Historically and traditionally, Native American preservation of the environment has been interwoven into cultural practice, which led to a special relationship between the environment and Native people. This thesis presents results from a comparative, quantitative study that focuses on Native Americans’ environmental attitudes and behaviors using data from the 1993, 1994, 2000, and 2010 waves of the General Social Survey. The study is framed using multicultural theory, which values the unique standpoint and perspectives of traditionally marginalized groups. This thesis focuses on the standpoints of …

Literature was reviewed in relation to current research in the pathophysiology of mTBI and focused in the area of cerebral blood flow, metabolic demands, and neuronal damage. Additionally, current recommendations relating to identification and response were reviewed in relation to athletics and in the military setting. Nursing knowledge was also addressed by a review …

Persuasion And Manipulation: Relevance Across Multiple Audiences, Kevin Sparks May 2012

Persuasion And Manipulation: Relevance Across Multiple Audiences, Kevin Sparks

Theses and Dissertations

A speaker who is addressing multiple audiences has split intentions. In order to derive the optimal benefit toward accomplishing her intentions, the speaker crafts her utterance to be relevant to her various audiences in different ways and to differing degrees. Similarly, the hearer will infer meaning based largely on how much he thinks that the speaker intended her utterance to be relevant to him, while also considering how the utterance may have been intended to be relevant to others. The goal of this paper is to describe how the presence of multiple audiences affects both the speaker's formation of an …

Childhood Obesity: Intervening In Utero, Mary Lee Beck May 2012

Childhood Obesity: Intervening In Utero, Mary Lee Beck

Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen to epidemic proportions in this country. American Indian youth are disproportionately affected by this epidemic and its comorbidities, like diabetes, when compared to whites, and even other minorities. There is no single determinant of cause. Currently interventions are focused at the individual, family, community and environmental levels. Perhaps the most important component in this epidemic, however, is being overlooked: the health status of the mother during pregnancy. There is strong evidence that obesity and diabetes are perpetually cycled from mother to baby during pregnancy, and maternal obesity and diabetes play a significant role …

Production Of A Transgenic Mouse That Specifically Overexpresses The Antioxidant Metallothionein In Endothelial Cells, Jennifer M. Teiken Apr 2012

Production Of A Transgenic Mouse That Specifically Overexpresses The Antioxidant Metallothionein In Endothelial Cells, Jennifer M. Teiken

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk for cardiovascular disease due, in part, to hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress. To investigate the potential for antioxidant protection of the vasculature, a transgenic mouse (Jtmt) that overexpresses the antioxidant metallothionein (MT) specifically in endothelial cells (EC) was produced. A 16kb transgene consisting of the murine Tie2 promoter and enhancer ligated to the human MTII gene was microinjected into FVB mouse embryos. Two founder mice, Jtmt1 and Jtmt4, produced transgenic progeny identified by PCR using human MTII primers. At 60 days of age, there were no distinguishable differences in phenotype, behavior, body and organ weights, and glucose …

Executive Functioning And Childhood Abuse Predictors On Laboratory Induced Aggression, Jessica R. Mugge Apr 2012

Executive Functioning And Childhood Abuse Predictors On Laboratory Induced Aggression, Jessica R. Mugge

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that neuropsychological dysfunction and the experience of violence during childhood are linked to the acquisition and expression of aggressive behavior. How these variables interact to influence aggression has not been effectively established in the literature, however. This study provided a prospective examination of the relationships between EF, the experience of childhood abuse, and aggression. Based on responses on a pre-screening questionnaire that assessed EF (BRIEF-A), 101 participants at a Midwestern university were selected for inclusion in this study. Fifty participants were classified as at risk for EF deficits (24 males, 26 females) while 51 participants were …

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Executive Control Functioning In Young Adults, Margaret L. Cowles Apr 2012

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Executive Control Functioning In Young Adults, Margaret L. Cowles

Theses and Dissertations

Physical fitness is associated with overall health and well-being. Increasing evidence, primarily among older adults, supports the link between physical health and cognitive health, particularly with subset of cognitive processes known as executive control functioning. Executive control functioning is needed to complete complex, goal-directed activities and involves the capacity to initiate and discontinue behaviors appropriately, to monitor and modify actions as needed, to plan future behavior when faced with novel tasks and situations, and to anticipate future outcomes. To date, researchers studying the link between physical fitness and executive control functioning have largely focused on older adults and have defined …

Comparative Analysis Of Yersinia Pestis Infection In Resistant And Susceptible Mice, Nathaniel D. Lambert Apr 2012

Comparative Analysis Of Yersinia Pestis Infection In Resistant And Susceptible Mice, Nathaniel D. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates that 2 month old, female B10.T(6R) are highly resistant to systemic infection with the KIM5 strain of Yersinia pestis , and that B10.T(6R) mice become susceptible to Y. pestis infection by 5 months of age. In this study we infected both young (2 month) and middle-aged (5-12 month) B10.T(6R) with equal CFUs of Y. pestis. LD50 of young B10.T(6R) was ∼1.4 X 10 4 CFU, while middle-aged B10. T(6R) mice exhibited an LD50 of ∼60 CFU. An elevated bacterial burden was found in the spleens of middle-aged mice at 24 and 60 h and the livers at …

Characterization Of Truncated Yscf: Innate Immune And Proinflammatory Responsiveness, Melody N. Toosky Apr 2012

Characterization Of Truncated Yscf: Innate Immune And Proinflammatory Responsiveness, Melody N. Toosky

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is a highly pathogenic gram negative bacterium that attenuates the host immune response by translocating effector proteins, known as Yops, directly from the bacterial cytoplasm into the eukaryotic cell cytoplasm using a Type III secretion system. The Type III secretion system uses a polymerized needle to translocate Yops into the eukaryotic cell. This self-polymerizing needle is composed of YscF. YscF has been tested as a possible vaccine alternative to other subunit vaccines. Wild type YscF has been previously shown to provide a low amount of protection against challenge with Y. pestis. The focus …

Addressing Functional Decline And Psychosocial Needs In Hospitalized Elderly, Rebecca A. Porier Mar 2012

Addressing Functional Decline And Psychosocial Needs In Hospitalized Elderly, Rebecca A. Porier

Theses and Dissertations

Do hospitalized geriatric patients have better outcomes such as increased patient satisfaction, decreased length of stay, and decreased readmission rates with specialized interdisciplinary care, as on Acute Care of Elders (ACE) units, versus usual care? This is one question that this paper will address. The goal in this type of care is to achieve medical stability while preserving maximum functioning. Collaboration with all health care specialties is crucial to geriatric care . Secondarily, the gap in nursing knowledge of the elderly patient's care needs has to be addressed. Thirdly, patient's psychosocial needs should be addressed in order to promote their …
