Military Rules: Expert Qualifications, Admissibility Of Expert Testimony, And Competency Hearings, Joshua E. Kastenberg

Faculty Book Display Case

This book provides a comprehensive review of the many valuable roles that psychologists can play in courts-martial and how they can collaborate with military attorneys to make effective trial teams.

Even though psychologists are becoming increasingly important in military trials, many are unfamiliar with the unique nature of this system. Likewise, lawyers often do not know how to effectively utilize psychologists' expertise.

This volume thus offers much-needed guidance for civilian psychologists and military counsel alike.

The chapter authors are forensic psychologists and military legal personnel — including defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges — who offer expert tips and strategies for …

Studies On The Generation And Detection Of Orbital Angular Momentum Based On Beam-Shaping Techniques, Xijie Luo May 2019

Studies On The Generation And Detection Of Orbital Angular Momentum Based On Beam-Shaping Techniques, Xijie Luo

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has many applications ranging from optical manipulation, imaging and remote sensing, and optical communications, and can be used to perform fundamental studies in quantum mechanics and quantum information. Moreover, single photons with high-order OAM allow for increasing the amount of information carried per photon in quantum communication. This thesis describes the study of methods for the preparation and detection of OAM of light in high mode order by utilizing beam shaping techniques using spatial light modulators (SLMs). The quality of the generated high-order OAM mode is limited by optical aberrations which are induced by …

Opportunities To Advance Complex Care In Rural And Frontier Areas, Jim Lloyd May 2019

Opportunities To Advance Complex Care In Rural And Frontier Areas, Jim Lloyd

Project ECHO Bibliography

People with complex care needs who live in rural communities face many of the same challenges experienced by individuals in urban areas, such as lack of transportation and food insecurity. However, rural communities are not just scaled-down cities. Despite facing similar challenges to patients living in urban areas, individuals with complex needs in rural areas often face additional hurdles caused by lack of infrastructure and geographic distances, making many high-touch complex care interventions difficult — if not impossible — to implement.

This brief, made possible through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, explores challenges associated with providing complex care in rural …

Telemedicine: An Evolving Field In Hepatology, Cindy Piao, Norah A Terrault, Souvik Sarkar

Project ECHO Bibliography

Healthcare delivery has been dramatically changing in recent times with advances in technology. One area of expansion has been the use of telemedicine due to progression in communication technologies. Telemedicine offers the opportunity to overcome barriers of access, improve patient satisfaction, improve healthcare outcomes and streamline communication between patients and providers. The primary modalities of telemedicine can be grouped into categories of 'remote monitoring,' 'store and forward' and 'interactive telemedicine.' These modalities of telemedicine have been practiced and explored within the scope of hepatology such as in liver transplantation, hepatocellular carcinoma and management of chronic hepatitis C (CHC). There are …

Direct Detection Of Relic Neutrino Background Remains Impossible: A Review Of More Recent Arguments, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache May 2019

Direct Detection Of Relic Neutrino Background Remains Impossible: A Review Of More Recent Arguments, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The existence of big bang relic neutrinos—exact analogues of the big bang relic photons comprising the cosmic microwave background radiation—is a basic prediction of standard cosmology. The standard big bang theory predicts the existence of 1087 neutrinos per flavour in the visible universe. This is an enormous abundance unrivalled by any other known form of matter, falling second only to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photon. Yet, unlike the CMB photon which boasts its first (serendipitous) detection in the 1960s and which has since been observed and its properties measured to a high degree of accuracy in a series of …

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances May 2019

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

Centered around the public arena of institutional architecture and its impact on the social being, in this recent work, entitled, Isolate to a Controllable Space, I focus on questions such as how do public environments work to sustain and reiterate meaning through our own sense of where we should be, or where we are permitted to be. I use photography to approach questions that ask how do systems and infrastructures obtain functionality through our participation; acknowledging that systems are conductors of the personal and participatory process of identification and categorization.

Generation And Use Of Femtosecond, Gigawatt, Near Infrared Laser Pulses From An Amplified, Mode-Locked, Ti:Sapphire Laser, David Anthony Valdés May 2019

Generation And Use Of Femtosecond, Gigawatt, Near Infrared Laser Pulses From An Amplified, Mode-Locked, Ti:Sapphire Laser, David Anthony Valdés

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

This work modeled the early to middle successes achieved in the field of ultrafast, high peak power optics, beginning with the work of Nobel Prize winners Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou in 1985. In our work, 100 fs light pulses of around 800 nm were generated by a Ti:Sapphire oscillator, then amplified to approximately 30 GW peak power using a chirped pulse amplification system that included regenerative and multi-pass amplifiers. As a verification of our pulses having high peak powers and ultrashort durations, they were then used to strike water, glass, and a Kerr Cell. Supercontinuum generation was observed as …

Material Matters: Paratextual Bodies In Nineteenth-Century Indigenous Book History, Amy Gore May 2019

Material Matters: Paratextual Bodies In Nineteenth-Century Indigenous Book History, Amy Gore

English Language and Literature ETDs

Material Matters: Paratextual Bodies in Nineteenth-Century Indigenous Book History, focuses on Indigenous authors during the long nineteenth century, from 1772 to 1936, to examine the known “firsts” of Indigenous literature. Starting with the first book published by a Native author and moving to other first entries into Indigenous literary production, I argue that the reprints, editions, and paratextual elements of Indigenous books embody a frontline of colonization as Indigenous authors battle the public perception of Indigenous books and negotiate the representations of Indigenous bodies.

Interrogation Of Spent Nuclear Fuel Casks Using Cosmic-Ray Muon Computed Tomography, Daniel C. Poulson Apr 2019

Interrogation Of Spent Nuclear Fuel Casks Using Cosmic-Ray Muon Computed Tomography, Daniel C. Poulson

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Properly accounting and safeguarding spent nuclear fuel are key components in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s mission of non-proliferation. Currently, no instruments are deployed that are able to verify the spent nuclear fuel contents of dry storage casks. Cosmic-ray muons provide an ideal probe for the heavily shielded casks due to their ability to penetrate thick, dense materials. Coulombic scattering of the muons, to first order, is proportional to the Z2/A of the material; this makes it especially sensitive to actinides, such as uranium and plutonium. The combination of these traits allows muons to be used to image and verify …

Effects Of Chemogenetic Inhibition Of Ventral Hippocampal Glutamatergic Neurons On Anxiety-Like Defensivity In Male Long-Evans Hooded Rats, Carlos R. Maestas-Olguin Apr 2019

Effects Of Chemogenetic Inhibition Of Ventral Hippocampal Glutamatergic Neurons On Anxiety-Like Defensivity In Male Long-Evans Hooded Rats, Carlos R. Maestas-Olguin

Psychology ETDs

Previous research in rodents and humans has implicated the ventral hippocampus in regulating anxiety. However, many rodent studies examining ventral hippocampal neuronal pathways have utilized lesions that create nonspecific and/or nonreversible damage to the region. The present study sought to characterize the role of ventral hippocampal glutamatergic pyramidal neurons in modulating anxiety-like behavior during exposure to a variety of threatening stimuli. Five weeks prior to testing, male Long-Evans hooded rats received ventral hippocampal viral-vector infusions expressing either pAAV-CaMKIIα-hM4D-mCherry (DREADD) or pAAV-CaMKIIa-EGFP (GFP). DREADD transfection allowed for the specific, noninvasive and temporary inhibition of ventral hippocampal glutamatergic neurons immediately before threat …

Determining Mediators Of Naive T Cell Motility And Dc Association In The Lymph Node, Janie Rae Byrum Apr 2019

Determining Mediators Of Naive T Cell Motility And Dc Association In The Lymph Node, Janie Rae Byrum

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

To become activated and perform effector functions, naive T cells move within lymph nodes to scan dendritic cells presenting antigen. Previous work has shown naive T cell activation is promoted by interleukin 7 in vivo, and it does so by regulating the T cell:dendritic cell interaction. Our work identifies a novel role for IL-7 in mediating naive T cell motility in the lymph node and promoting T cell association with DCs. Additionally, we have developed a method for analyzing microscopy images, regionalized normalized mutual information, to assess intercellular associations between T cells and other cells within the lymph node. Dendritic …

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO, 2019

ABSTRACT

A cavity designed to have multiple harmonic TM0N0 modes can be used to accurately measure the longitudinal profile of a bunched charged particle beam passing through its bore, non-invasively, and in real time.

Multi-harmonic TM0N0 cavities were designed, constructed, and beamline tested in a variety of experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF or Jlab). Measurements with a sampling oscilloscope provided signals that resemble the profile of electron …

Deceleration: Slowing Down To Determine An Accelerated Loan’S Post Dismissal Status, Stephanie Schneider Apr 2019

Deceleration: Slowing Down To Determine An Accelerated Loan’S Post Dismissal Status, Stephanie Schneider

New Mexico Law Review

The autopsy report for the American Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 is lengthy, and, while examiners may disagree on the specifics, there is widespread agreement that the cause of death was a sudden and dramatic drop in the price of American houses. This precipitous drop, cataclysmic “pop,” was in part driven by the market correcting itself following years of home value appreciation. However, the effect of the correction was magnified by subprime lending practices that allowed borrowers without verified sources of income to obtain loans. Ultimately, this fallout coalesced into a dramatic increase in defaults on mortgage payments and a corresponding …

Transitioning From Experienced Nurse To Resident In Blended Cohort Transition-To-Specialty Nurse Residency Programs, Rachael Frija Apr 2019

Transitioning From Experienced Nurse To Resident In Blended Cohort Transition-To-Specialty Nurse Residency Programs, Rachael Frija

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Recommendations from the Institute of Medicine promote nurse residency programs for experienced nurses (EN) transitioning to new areas of specialty. A large non-profit healthcare system in the Southwest implemented three Transition-to-Specialty (TtS) residency programs using a blended cohort approach consisting of graduate nurses (GNs) and ENs. Upon review of program outcomes, ENs reported to have higher attrition rates than their GN counterparts. Given the substantial pecuniary loss related to EN turnover, understanding the ENs’ perspectives to achieve successful role transition to a new area of specialty is critical to a successful program. This qualitative descriptive study sought to describe the …

Metabolon-Inspired Design Of Multi-Modal Catalytic Cascade, Madelaine Seow Chavez Apr 2019

Metabolon-Inspired Design Of Multi-Modal Catalytic Cascade, Madelaine Seow Chavez

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Developing hybrid catalytic systems has been researched for the past decade in an effort to efficiently incorporate catalysts of different modalities in catalytic cascades. It has become imperative to design a cascade system where the catalysts are spatially organized to control the delivery of precursors, intermediates, and products. In this work, we have shown that a molecular catalyst, biocatalyst, and metallic catalyst can be co-localized using a carbonaceous support to create a hybrid catalytic system and complete the oxidation of oxalic acid to create a microchemical reactor. The molecular, pyrene-TEMPO catalyst oxidizes glyoxalic acid to oxalic acid. The enzyme oxalate …

Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia Apr 2019

Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The avoidable complications of clogging and dislodgement of gastrostomy tubes (g-tubes) place a tremendous burden on patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the entire medical system. These complications are associated with $130 million in healthcare utilization each year. Insufficient education of patients and personal caregivers regarding the prevention of complications of clogging and dislodgement of g-tubes is identified as a major barrier. Preintervention and postintervention education program models were established, which include a preprocedure clinic visit with education as well as scheduled follow-up phone calls. A chart review and follow-up phone call was used to evaluate the effect of providing consistent …
