Teachers’ Perspectives Of The Observation Process Within The Evaluation, Christine E. Lenhart
Teachers’ Perspectives Of The Observation Process Within The Evaluation, Christine E. Lenhart
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
One of the largest challenges for administrators is to create and implement teacher evaluation systems that help improve teaching and student learning. As policymakers and administrators have worked throughout the United States to develop and implement new teacher evaluation systems, teacher involvement in developing those teacher evaluation systems has been limited. Specifically, the evaluation process and the tools used in a state in the southwestern part of the United States to evaluate teachers do not incorporate teachers’ perspectives, yet they directly impact teacher standing, ability to receive tenure status, and, in some cases, their salary.
The purpose of this research …

Oral Development And Breastfeeding: An Assessment Of The Lactation Care Provider Approach, Robin Gatlin
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Breastfeeding influences the infant’s oral development in many ways. Lactation care providers work closely with the mother-infant pair and may be the first to provide information on oral health. The purpose of this study is to assess lactation care provider’s perception, attitude and behavior on the relationship between breastfeeding and oral development; including oral malocclusion, breathing patterns, tethered oral tissues and dental caries. A survey sent to lactation care providers who are members of The United States Lactation Consultant Association. A total of 12 members participated in the survey. Of that, 11 were International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and …

Case 1 A previously healthy 16-year-old man was initially evaluated in the emergency department for traumatic injuries following a high-impact motor vehicle accident. He was a bodybuilder who used anabolic steroids. He denied abdominal or back pain. His physical examination was signifcant for a palpable liver edge. Routine laboratory tests including liver function tests were unremarkable. A computed tomographic (CT) scan showed an unsuspected mass in the right lobe of the liver. A subsequent triple-phase magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the abdomen showed a 15.1 × 15.0 × 10.8 cm mass in the right hepatic lobe that exhibited heterogeneous …

A Noncoherent Governance: Tinkering With Stones In The Old City Of Acre, Caitlin M. Davis
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation recounts a series of episodes in the architectural conservation of the Old City of Acre in Israel. It studies the stones and mortars, residents and inspectors, papers and computers involved in the conservation of historic buildings, highlighting the moments in which the technical details of architectural conservation entangle themselves with the administrative techniques of government authorities. I describe architectural conservation as a tentative process, one that requires the coordination of various actants into precarious associations. Here, description is important. The pages that follow experiment with an anthropological practice that writes against conclusion. This is an anthropology that refuses …
Diversification And Biogeography Of An Indo-Pacific Bird Radiation (Pachycephalidae), Serina S. Brady
Diversification And Biogeography Of An Indo-Pacific Bird Radiation (Pachycephalidae), Serina S. Brady
Biology ETDs
The utility of islands as natural laboratories of evolution is exemplified in the patterns of differentiation in widespread, phenotypically variable lineages. Pachycephalidae is one of the most complex avian radiations spanning the vast archipelagos of the Indo-Pacific, making it an ideal group to study the patterns and processes of diversification on islands. Here, we present a robust phylogenetic hypothesis for all five genera within Pachycephalidae, based on thousands of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) generated with a target-capture approach and high-throughput sequencing. We clarify certain taxonomic relationships within Pachycephala and discover that Wallacea plays a much larger role in pachycephalid evolutionary history …

New Foundation In The Sciences: Physics Without Sweeping Infinities Under The Rug, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
It is widely known among the Frontiers of physics, that “sweeping under the rug” practice has been quite the norm rather than exception. In other words, the leading paradigms have strong tendency to be hailed as the only game in town. For example, renormalization group theory was hailed as cure in order to solve infinity problem in QED theory. For instance, a quote from Richard Feynman goes as follows: “What the three Nobel Prize winners did, in the words of Feynman, was "to get rid of the infinities in the calculations. The infinities are still there, but now they can …
Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart
Influence Of Metabolic Capacity On The Consequences Of Spreading Depolarization, Katelyn M. Reinhart
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In the United States, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and stroke survivors often face long-term disability. After ischemic stroke, the ischemic territory can expand and recruit previously viable tissues into the lesioned area. During this critical period, there is an unsettling lack of interventions that prevent or treat secondary neuronal loss and cognitive decline. Clinical subdural recordings have revealed a close link between infarct progression and waves of spreading depolarizations (SD) in the acutely injured brain. SD is a slowly progressing wave of near-complete neuroglia depolarization that is extremely energetically demanding and this additional metabolic ‘hit’ …

Little Farm Hands: Rural Child Labor, Family, And Memory In The U.S. Southwest, 1890-1940, Jairo E. Marshall
History ETDs
Child labor was a traditional subsistence and agricultural practice throughout the rural Southwest. Between 1890 and 1940 a series of changes occurred within agriculture, ranching, and rural land/labor patterns in New Mexico and Texas. However, child labor remained a useful economic strategy for families well into this period, because it remained grounded in environmental challenges, cultural practices, agrarian ideologies, and children’s social and physical development. Agribusinesses took advantage of this labor pool, while schools and communities continued to allow children to labor, believing it to be either necessary or beneficial.
Families and children continued to have agency to determine the …

Mechanisms And Consequences Of Myb Gene Activation In Salivary Gland Tumors, Candace Frerich
Mechanisms And Consequences Of Myb Gene Activation In Salivary Gland Tumors, Candace Frerich
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an aggressive tumor with a tendency to infiltrate surrounding nerves and metastasize to distant sites. The standard treatment often fails to control local tumor recurrence and distant metastases and no approved targeted therapeutic options exist for these tumors. The goal of our studies was to reveal the molecular mechanisms driving ACC tumor development and novel drug targets to improve patient morbidity and mortality.
We first analyzed clinical and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data for 68 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) ACC tumor samples and described previously unappreciated molecular heterogeneity that predicts patient outcome. The poor outcome subgroup …

Effects Of Temperature And Nitrogen Depletion On Biodiesel Production Under Saline Conditions By A Mixed Algal Community, Sarah J. Kintner
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
The overall objective addressed in this research was to gain a better understanding of how native mixed cultures of phototrophic microorganisms from a saline system may be used for biodiesel production. Laboratory batch reactors were grown under variable temperatures and nitrogen concentrations with original inoculum from a hypersaline pond in central New Mexico. Growth at 40 C° led to lower lipid production, lower nitrate consumption, and less diverse communities than growth at 20° C. All communities were dominated by the cyanobacteria Plectonema except the in second experiment, where they were only 30% of the culture. In a second experiment with …

Project ECHO Bibliography
BACKGROUND: Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) and related models of medical tele-education are rapidly expanding; however, their effectiveness remains unclear. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of ECHO and ECHO-like medical tele-education models of healthcare delivery in terms of improved provider- and patient-related outcomes.
METHODS: We searched English-language studies in PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases from 1 January 2007 to 1 December 2018 as well as bibliography review. Two reviewers independently screened citations for peer-reviewed publications reporting provider- and/or patient-related outcomes of technology-enabled collaborative learning models that satisfied six criteria of the ECHO framework. Reviewers then independently abstracted data, …

Additively Manufactured Continuous Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites For High-Performance Applications, Nekoda Van De Werken
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The goal of this dissertation is to provide a foundation for the advancement of additive manufacturing (AM) toward production of high-performance carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites (CFRPs). AM can provide valuable advantages over conventional composite manufacturing techniques, including the control over fiber orientation, capability of manufacturing complex geometries, out-of-autoclave processing, elimination of the need for composite tooling, and the ability to perform lights-out manufacturing. Currently, however, a suite of challenges related to modelling, design, manufacturing defects, and general limitations in the current understanding of the processing-structure-property relationships exist in AM of composites. To this end, this dissertation investigates novel …

Optical Angular Scatterometry: In-Line Approach For Roll-2-Roll And Nano-Imprint Fabrication Systems, Juan Jose Faria-Briceno
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
As critical dimensions continue to shrink and structures become more complex, metrology processes are challenging to implement during in-line nanomanufacturing. Non-destructive, non-contact, and high-speed conditions are required to achieve proper metrology processes during in-line manufacturing. Optical scatterometry is a nanoscale metrology tool widely used in integrated circuit manufacturing for characterization and quality control. However, most applications of optical scatterometry operate off-line. A high-speed, in-line, non-contact, non-destructive scatterometry angular system has been demonstrated in this work to scan pattern surfaces during real-time nano-fabrication.
Our system has demonstrated scanning capabilities using flat, 1D and 2D complex structures. The flat surface samples consist …
