Sexual Victimization, Mental Health, And Protective Factors Among Women With Multiple Marginalized Statuses, Gabriela López

Psychology ETDs

Intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989) and minority stress (Meyer, 2003) frameworks were used as theoretical foundations to examine associations among sexual minority status (e.g., lesbian and bisexual) and race/ethnicity (e.g., White, Black, Latinx), adult sexual victimization and revictimization, mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms), and protective factors (i.e., religiosity, spirituality, social support). Participants were 673 women who identified as lesbian/mostly lesbian or bisexual who completed wave 3 of the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women (CHLEW) survey. Participants were racially and ethnically diverse, with slightly more women identifying as White (37.4%, n = 261), than Black (36.0%, …

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Attenuates Methamphetamine-Induced Reward And Blocks Methamphetamine-Induced Anxiety-Like Behaviors In Adult Male Rats, John T. Madden May 2020

Antagonizing Serotonin 2a (5-Ht2a) Receptors Attenuates Methamphetamine-Induced Reward And Blocks Methamphetamine-Induced Anxiety-Like Behaviors In Adult Male Rats, John T. Madden

Psychology ETDs

Methamphetamine (Meth) is a highly addictive and widely abused psychostimulant. Research indicates that the selective 5-HT2A receptor antagonist M100907 attenuates several psychostimulant-induced behaviors, including conditioned place preference (CPP). However, these findings have not yet been extended to Meth. The present study investigated the effects of M100907 on the acquisition of Meth-CPP and Meth-induced anxiety.

Adult male rats were tested using an unbiased two-chamber apparatus across eight consecutive days. Prior to Meth administration, rats were pretreated with M100907 and placed into their initially non-preferred chamber. After four Meth conditioning sessions, the effects of M100907 on Meth-induced changes in CPP were …

No Longer Fenced Out: Outlaw Media Discourse And Resistance To Gentrification In Greenwich Village, Joseph Francis Gallegos May 2020

No Longer Fenced Out: Outlaw Media Discourse And Resistance To Gentrification In Greenwich Village, Joseph Francis Gallegos

American Studies ETDs

Greenwich Village is a so-called “gayborhood” that accepts and welcomes LGBT people. However, Greenwich Village has been undergoing gentrification for the past few decades, and this process exists due to a police-created order of violence that subjugates and displaces queer people and people of color. This order seeks to create a space that is friendly to capital and wealth.

Resistance to these strategies requires tactics that do not necessarily hew to mainstream methods of getting a message out, such as using mainstream media to make a case against gentrification. These often fail, as they will fall on deaf ears of …

Integrated Studies Of Intracontinental Deformation In The Interior Western Usa, Cretaceous To Recent, Jacob Oliver Thacker May 2020

Integrated Studies Of Intracontinental Deformation In The Interior Western Usa, Cretaceous To Recent, Jacob Oliver Thacker

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The advent of plate tectonic theory satisfactorily explained a number of deformation belts around the world. However intracontinental deformation (deformation inboard of a plate margin) remains poorly understood in plate tectonic models. In order to further our understanding of intracontinental tectonics and its effects, this dissertation examines paleotectonic and neotectonic settings within the interior western USA.

Chapter 1 focuses on late Miocene–Recent deformation inboard of the San Andreas plate margin fault and its role on the integration history of the lower Colorado River. The neotectonic analysis included geometric and kinematic fault data collected in key geologic units to characterize the …

Assessing Drought Vegetation Dynamics At The Landscape Scale In Semiarid Grass- And Shrubland Using Mesma, Rowan Converse May 2020

Assessing Drought Vegetation Dynamics At The Landscape Scale In Semiarid Grass- And Shrubland Using Mesma, Rowan Converse

Geography ETDs

New Mexico experienced substantial impacts of regional-scale drought from 2011-2014. Global climate change may make such events a new normal for the southwest: drought events are expected to increase in both frequency and severity over the coming century. While semiarid grasslands recover quickly from short-term drought, the cumulative impacts of climate change may reduce the resiliency of these systems over time. Remote sensing methods can allow efficient and cost-effective comparison of ecosystem recovery from drought events over time using long-running imaging systems like Landsat. We investigate the efficacy of using multi-endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) to quantify the impacts of …

"Fat Is A Queer Issue, Too": Complicating Queerness And Body Size In Women's Sexual Orientation And Identity, Hannah R. Long

Communication ETDs

This dissertation explores the experiences of self-identified Lesbian-Bisexual-Queer-Transgender (LBQT) women wearing U.S. clothing size 1x and up. Drawing on research within queer theory, fat studies, and Crip theory, the main goal of this study is to explore how these women engage in their embodied everyday performances of the body and identity, particularly through looking at relationship to body and self, intersectional complications, and navigation of physical and discursive space(s). Through analyzing their narratives collected in in-depth interviews, I find that fatness contributes to how people see desire for their selves and others, community, and space-taking. Additionally, within the narratives of …

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith May 2020

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation is about how agricultural biotechnology was invoked in Argentina to rebuild the state and the economy after the 2001 economic crisis, which I approach by making visible the social lives of those experiencing the unintended consequences of a large-scale agrarian transformation. My starting point is to try to understand the paradoxical way that a leftist political project, Kirchnerismo, relied on and promoted an export driven soy boom as a way to rebuild the state after the 2001 economic crisis. While I do give significant attention to the high level state and industry practices, my goal is to examine …

Healing Through The Photographic Murals Of James "Chip" "Jetsonorama" Thomas, Mandolen Sanchez May 2020

Healing Through The Photographic Murals Of James "Chip" "Jetsonorama" Thomas, Mandolen Sanchez

Art & Art History ETDs

James “Chip” “Jetsonorama” Thomas is an Indian Health Services physician who moved to the Navajo Nation in 1987. Although he is not culturally Native American, Thomas depicts Navajo in large-scale black and white photographic murals. His work has been discussed in online articles and books about street art in terms of their relationship to street art, specifically the art of JR, as well as their role as activist art on the Navajo Nation. There has been a lack of substantial research, though, into the way in which his photographic murals respond to or engage with nineteenth and twentieth-century photographs of …

Side-Channel Power Resistance For Encryption Algorithms Using Implementation Diversity, Ivan M. Bow May 2020

Side-Channel Power Resistance For Encryption Algorithms Using Implementation Diversity, Ivan M. Bow

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis paper investigates countermeasures to hardware side-channel attacks and proposes a new solution to this ever growing threat against data integrity and security. The side-channel attack methods, differential power analysis and correlation power analysis, are both very powerful techniques and are used to gain access to secrets inside of a field programmable gate array that are otherwise inaccessible, in particular the cryptographic key for the Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm. To counter these attacks, we propose a method of changing the internal hardware configuration of the field programmable gate array using dynamic partial reconfiguration. Using this method, we change the …

An Analysis Of Contraflow Network Resiliency Under Mass Evacuation Conditions In Houston, Texas, Aron L. Roberts May 2020

An Analysis Of Contraflow Network Resiliency Under Mass Evacuation Conditions In Houston, Texas, Aron L. Roberts

Geography ETDs

Contraflow, an emergency traffic management strategy, is a proposed approach to increase evacuation efficiency. However, these contraflow networks have rarely been tested and are vulnerable to disruption. This research examines the contraflow network of Houston, Texas, using a novel approach to evacuation modeling. Evacuation times of census block groups were modelled under both contraflow and non-contraflow conditions. Evacuation routes were then severed one-by-one - it was found that severing a route in non-contraflow conditions increased travel times more than under contraflow conditions. Changes in travel times were then mapped and then correlated with socio-economic variables. Results suggested that contraflow initiation …

Investigating The Effects Of Accelerated Lithium Deposition On The Abuse Response Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Eric J. Deichmann May 2020

Investigating The Effects Of Accelerated Lithium Deposition On The Abuse Response Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Eric J. Deichmann

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Li deposition at the graphitic anode is widely reported in literature as one of the leading causes of capacity fade in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Previous literature has also linked Li deposition resulting from low-temperature and high-rate ageing to diminished safety characteristics, however no current research has probed the effects of Li deposition on the abuse response of well- characterized cells. Additionally, no previous studies have investigated the use of an accelerated Li deposition technique for probing the effects of Li deposition. Using overtemperature testing, a relationship between increased concentrations of Li deposition and exacerbated abuse response in 1Ah pouch cells …

The Role Of Mentorship In Achieving Nba Success: Narratives Told By Nine Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame Inductees, Mark J. Lasota May 2020

The Role Of Mentorship In Achieving Nba Success: Narratives Told By Nine Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame Inductees, Mark J. Lasota

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Mentorship entails a special relationship between two people centered on personal or professional growth and development. An effective mentoring relationship is not always easy to acquire. A recent study out of Olivet Nazarene University (2019) suggested around 75 percent of professional men and women want a mentor, but around 37 percent actually have a person in their lives they considered a mentor. On a macro level, the National Mentoring Partnership (2014) estimated only around one-third of children and teenagers have a trusted individual outside their households they can turn to for guidance and support.

Considering the widespread application of mentoring …

Ecologically Driven Changes In Subsistence Strategies: An Examination Of Bone Cross-Sectional Geometrical Properties In Hunter-Gatherers From Australia And Early Agriculturists From Belize, Ethan C. Hill

Anthropology ETDs

The primary purpose of this dissertation was to examine how changes to ecological context can urge subsistence level populations to adopt new subsistence strategies. This was accomplished by using metrics of bone strength to infer temporal behavior change in Holocene (10,000 BP – present) skeletal samples from southern Australia and southern Belize. The first paper, An Examination of the Cross-sectional Geometrical Properties of the Long Bone Diaphyses of Holocene Foragers from Roonka, South Australia, was written in collaboration with Osbjorn Pearson, Arthur Durband, Keryn Walshe, Kristian Carlson, and Frederick Grine. We compared long bone data for 69 individuals at Roonka …

Reproducible Application Platforms For Distributed Computing Systems, John Q. Wofford Iii May 2020

Reproducible Application Platforms For Distributed Computing Systems, John Q. Wofford Iii

Computer Science ETDs

A scientific conclusion requires falsifiable evidence. Results from distributed systems research are often difficult to reproduce because these systems consist of multiple nodes, each running independent system software and communicating across inter-node devices. This work motivates, describes, and demonstrates a reproducible application platform for distributed computing systems based on a layered, container-based software stack. This system effectively moves all application software dependencies from the host to a portable container. Each layer represents a particular functionality of the software stack. The layers are modular and extensible so that results are not only repeatable, but they can also be built on to …
