Plithogenic Cognitive Maps In Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Nivetha Martin Jul 2020

Plithogenic Cognitive Maps In Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Nivetha Martin

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Plithogenic sets introduced by Smarandache (2018) have disclosed new research vistas and this paper introduces the novel concept of plithogenic cognitive maps (PCM) and its applications in decision making. The new approach of defining instantaneous state neutrosophic vector with the confinement of indeterminacy to (0,1] is proposed to quantify the degree of indeterminacy. The resultant vector is obtained by applying instantaneous state vector through the connection matrix together with plithogenic operators comprising the contradiction degrees. The connection matrix is represented as fuzzy matrix and neutrosophic matrix and the resultant vector is determined by applying plithogenic fuzzy operators and plithogenic neutrosophic …

Radiation-Balanced Fiber Lasers And Amplifiers, Esmaeil Mobini Souchelmaei Mr Jul 2020

Radiation-Balanced Fiber Lasers And Amplifiers, Esmaeil Mobini Souchelmaei Mr

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Over the past decades, high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers have been extensively under research to achieve higher output powers. However, temperature rise in the core of fiber lasers and amplifiers has been a big issue in power-scaling. Radiation-balancing is a viable technique introduced for effective heat mitigation in lasers and amplifiers by S. Bowman in 1995. Radiation-balancing relies on solid-state laser cooling as a self-cooling mechanism to mitigate the generated heat in lasers and amplifiers. To implement the mentioned idea in fiber lasers and amplifiers, a set of issues should be scrutinized; (i) the amenability of silica glass (as the …

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi Jul 2020

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was implemented in the United States (U.S.) in 1974 for the purpose of protecting consumers from water contaminants. The Federal government gave the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to delegate the responsibility of ensuring that States, Sovereign Nations and U.S. territories meet specific requirements upon being granted primacy to regulate all public water systems (PWSs) in their jurisdiction. An examination of seven years (2013-2019) of SDWA compliance data from all PWSs in the U.S. revealed trends within various categories of regulating agencies that could create disparities in how water systems are regulated. Analyses …

Factors Affecting A Riparian Cottonwood Stand Die-Off Along The Rio Grande Pueblo Of Santa Ana New Mexico, Usa, Hannah A. Varani Jul 2020

Factors Affecting A Riparian Cottonwood Stand Die-Off Along The Rio Grande Pueblo Of Santa Ana New Mexico, Usa, Hannah A. Varani

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Negative effects of river control include altered sediment and biotic processes, leading to channel incision and discordance between water delivery and the evolved physiology of seed dispersal. In forests where tree regeneration is inhibited due to such altered processes, tree mortality is of utmost importance guiding forest management. I compared cottonwood ring-widths between adjacent live and dead forest patches in a nested plot design along the regulated Rio Grande, New Mexico. Particle size in the associated sediments, competition, and age were analyzed as contributing factors. The entire stand had declining growth between 2002 and 2015. Tree growth correlated strongest with …

Examining Transmission Loss Availability For Basin Aquifer Recharge From Perennial Streams In The Chuska Mountains On The Navajo Nation, Griffin Nuzzo Jul 2020

Examining Transmission Loss Availability For Basin Aquifer Recharge From Perennial Streams In The Chuska Mountains On The Navajo Nation, Griffin Nuzzo

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Stream transmission losses due to infiltration from semiarid, perennial streams are important processes that can help water managers and users quantify aquifer recharge. Transmission losses are streamflow reductions that are due to infiltration through the streambed, evapotranspiration, and losses to the floodplain or streambanks (Shanafield, et.al, 2014). Transmission losses from infiltration will always be greater than the amount recharged bacause streamflow hat infiltrates into the streambed can take a variety of pathways other that recharge. This study considers transmission losses in Whiskey Creek, a perennial stream on the Navajo Nation in the Chuska Mountains. The objectives of this study are …

Horton Complex Stormwater Analysis And Management Plan, Bradley D. Meyer

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Flooding, water quality degradation and erosion are some of the negative impacts created by poorly managed urban stormwater runoff. Managing runoff is an ongoing challenge for watershed managers because of the constantly changing landscape due to development and redevelopment. The Village of Ruidoso in South Central New Mexico is an example of an urban area that is taking an innovative and progressive approach to stormwater management. The focus of this professional project was to perform a stormwater analysis for the Village of Ruidoso, apply it to the Horton Complex – an old school complex that the Village acquired and wants …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Diagnostic and molecular genetic testing are key in advancing the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), yet little is known about testing patterns outside of clinical trials, especially in older patients. We analyzed diagnostic and molecular testing patterns over time in 565 patients aged ≥ 55 years with newly diagnosed AML enrolled in the Connect MDS/AML Disease Registry (NCT01688011) in the United States. Diagnostic data were recorded at enrolment and compared with published guidelines. The percentage of bone marrow blasts was reported for 82.1% of patients, and cellularity was the most commonly reported bone marrow morphological feature. Flow …

Plant Litter Decomposition Differs With Species And Soil Resources In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Andrea Lopez Jun 2020

Plant Litter Decomposition Differs With Species And Soil Resources In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Andrea Lopez

Biology ETDs

Uncertainties surround the extent to which diversity can mitigate the effects of climate change and anthropogenic activity on ecosystem functions. In desert grasslands, changes to water availability and soil nitrogen, two primary resources that limit ecosystem processes, can have lasting impacts on nutrient cycling. We used grass litter from Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua gracilis, Pleuraphis jamesii, and Sporobolus spp. to assess the effects of soil resources on single- and multi-species decomposition in a Chihuahuan Desert grassland in central New Mexico, USA. Litterbags were deployed in a factorial experiment that manipulated rain pulse size (5- vs. 20-mm) and frequency …

An A Posteriori Error Analysis Of Stationary Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics, Ari E. Rappaport Jun 2020

An A Posteriori Error Analysis Of Stationary Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics, Ari E. Rappaport

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Adjoint based a posteriori error analysis is a technique to produce exact error repre- sentations for quantities of interests that are functions of the solution of systems of partial differential equations (PDE). The tools used in the analysis consist of duality arguments and compatible residuals. In this thesis we apply a posteriori error anal- ysis to the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations . MHD provides a continuum level description of conducting fluids in the presence of electromagnetic fields. The MHD system is therefore a multi-physics system, capturing both fluid and electro- magnetic effects. Mathematically, The equations of MHD are highly nonlinear and …

Political Use Of Instagram: The Relationships Between Motivations, Frequent Use, Incidental News Exposure And Online Political Participation, Hyerin Kwon

Communication ETDs

As Instagram is widely popular with young people, politicians and news media turn to Instagram and spread an array of political information. Despite the growing popularity, few studies have explored political use of Instagram. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate why and how college students use Instagram for politics. Based on the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) theory, this study examines students’ motivations and political uses of Instagram, such as getting political information, expressing political opinions, and following political accounts. Lastly, this thesis explores how young people unintentionally get political information on Instagram. This thesis found that motivation for …

Recruitment To, And Consequences Of, High-Risk Non-Violent Anti-Regime Campaigns In Autocratic Societies: The Egyptian Uprising Of 2011, Marian Azab Jun 2020

Recruitment To, And Consequences Of, High-Risk Non-Violent Anti-Regime Campaigns In Autocratic Societies: The Egyptian Uprising Of 2011, Marian Azab

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation examines whether the Western-driven model of recruitment to, and consequences of, high-risk activism that McAdam introduced before the internet applies to non-violent anti-regime campaigns in autocratic contexts after the social media revolution. I use the case of the 18-day non-violent Egyptian uprising of 2011 to investigate these topics. I specifically utilize data from the Arab Democracy Barometer survey and other micro- and macro-level sources. I find that face-to-face ties are most effective in recruitment to such movements. Online networks create new forms of dissent, such as online activism. Moreover, online ties are especially useful in mobilizing women. I …
