Genetic Evidence, Maoa, And State V. Yepez, Nita A. Farahany, Roderick T. Kennedy, Brandon L. Garrett Aug 2020

Genetic Evidence, Maoa, And State V. Yepez, Nita A. Farahany, Roderick T. Kennedy, Brandon L. Garrett

New Mexico Law Review

This amicus brief offers two main contributions. First, we describe how MAOA studies based on the prior “candidate-gene approach” are unreliable due to inherent flaws in the methodology, leading to inconsistencies in replication. Second, the general scientific consensus has emerged that the earlier MAOA studies (upon which the defense experts relied) are now an outdated method of studying psychiatric genetics. Third, to the extent that recent studies adopting the more rigorous genomewide association studies (GWAS) have attempted to replicate the earlier findings of MAOA candidate-gene studies, they have found no reliable correlation between MAOA and violence.

Who Watches The Watchmen? Character And Fitness Panels And The Onerous Demands Imposed On Bar Applicants, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar Aug 2020

Who Watches The Watchmen? Character And Fitness Panels And The Onerous Demands Imposed On Bar Applicants, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar

New Mexico Law Review

This Article discusses the onerous requirements that state bars sometimes impose on bar applicants to prove good moral character despite the vague definition of the term and the apparently limitless amount of evidence that a character and fitness panel can rely on to deny or delay admission. We present recent examples of decisions that beg the question of whether state bars are really preventing the entry of the unethical into the profession or simply screening out applicants that panelists dislike. We also discuss at least one potential problem highlighted within the process by COVID-19. This Article argues that while most …

Alcohol Prohibition In The New Mexico And Arizona State Judiciaries At 100 Years: The Development Of Law And Shaping Of Society In The Southwest, Joshua Kastenberg

New Mexico Law Review

This article is examines the development of liquor limitation laws in the New Mexico and Arizona territories. The decisions issued by the territorial courts were persuasive on the state supreme courts in the sense that neither Arizona’s nor New Mexico’s justices decided to overturn prior territorial decisions on alcohol. The article analyzes Arizona and New Mexico Supreme Court decisions prior to and during the National Prohibition Act. The period of the National Prohibition Act’s was a time of significant federal law-enforcement action. Doctrines of preemption, incorporation of laws through “reference,” double jeopardy involving prosecutions under federal and state sovereigns, and …

Sharpening The Cat's Paw: Reconceptualizing Cat's Paw Liability To Fit The Needs Of Contingent Workers After Armstrong V. Arcanum Grp. Inc., Ransom Smith

New Mexico Law Review

Contingent workers—those employed by staffing firms and contracting firms but often subject to the supervision and control of a firm’s client—are a particularly vulnerable class of employees, less likely to be treated by their employers with the same degree of protection against workplace discrimination as workers in traditional employment arrangements. The Tenth circuit case of Armstrong v. Arcanum Grp. Inc. magnified yet another disadvantage that contingent workers run up against when attempting to challenge an alleged discriminatory decision. Following Armstrong, contingent workers who premise their retaliatory or discriminatory discharge claims on the acts of biased employees who influence employment …

The Application Of A Middle Range Nursing Theory: Roy’S Adaptation Model, To The Caregivers Of Mental Illness Sufferers, Melanie K. Gibson

Theoretical Foundation in Advanced Practice Nursing

Caregivers of mental illness sufferers need supportive measures from health care providers due to the significant emotional, psychological, and physical burdens of this role. I consider the application of the Roy’s Adaptation Model, a middle-range nursing theory, by the nurse practitioner as a framework for assisting this population. Health care providers can apply these guided interventions to encourage, educate, and achieve the caregiver’s optimal wellbeing and quality of life.

The Investigation Of Surface Structures On Various Pathogens And Their Interactions With The Human Immune System, Carmen M. Villalobos Aug 2020

The Investigation Of Surface Structures On Various Pathogens And Their Interactions With The Human Immune System, Carmen M. Villalobos

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

The cell surface is the first interface the host immune system encounters and

its investigation has led to a better understanding of cellular biology and types of

pathways that pathogens target in a host cell. The cell surface has evolved to include

many functions such as manipulation of the cytoskeleton, cell signaling, membrane

trafficking, adhesion, and integration into host tissue. The pathogens of interest are

the pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans, and the parasite, Giardia lamblia and we

investigate the consequences of drug treatments on the cell surface, leading to

promising new targets.

Recruitment Of Schools For Intervention Research To Reduce Health Disparities For Sexual And Gender Minority Students, Daniel Shattuck, Janie Lee Hall, Amy Green, Cynthia Greenberg, Linda Peñaloza, Mary Ramos, Cathleen Willging

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Recruiting schools for intervention research can be daunting. This study examined the experiences of researchers recruiting public high schools for a randomized controlled trial to reduce suicide disparities for sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth by implementing evidence-based strategies to enhance school environments. We enrolled 42 schools throughout New Mexico between August 2016 and April 2017. Based on qualitative analysis of recruitment efforts, three groups of factors affected enrollment: (1) non-SGM-specific factors, (2) SGM-specific factors, and (3) facilitating factors. Non-SGM-specific factors negatively impacted the willingness or ability to participate (e.g., demanding staff workloads and beliefs that "outsiders" should not assist …

Sexual Dysfunction After Rectal Cancer Treatment, Sarah M. Popek Aug 2020

Sexual Dysfunction After Rectal Cancer Treatment, Sarah M. Popek

Clinical and Translational Science Center Scholarly Output

Introduction: Treatment for rectal cancer results in sexual dysfunction. Sexual function is a component of the HR-QOL (health related quality of life) measures. The incidence of sexual dysfunction following treatment for rectal cancer and its impact on the HR-QOL is not well delineated, particularly on women.

Objectives: To prospectively assess the degree of sexual dysfunction that occurs after treatment for Stage I-III rectal cancer and the corresponding short term (<3 months) and long term (<2 years) effect on the Quality of Life measure for oncology (QOL-30).

Methods: Validated questionnaires will be administered to assess sexual function and quality of life. The International Index of Erectile Dysfunction will be administered to male patients and …

Telemedicine In Liver Disease And Beyond: Can The Covid-19 Crisis Lead To Action?, Marina Serper, Allen W. Cubell, Mary Elisabeth Deleener, Tara K. Casher, Dale J. Rosenberg, Dale Whitebloom, Roy M. Rosin

Project ECHO Bibliography

Evidence strongly supports that access to specialty gastroenterology or hepatology care in cirrhosis is associated with higher adherence to guideline-recommended care and improves clinical outcomes. Presently, only about one half of acute care hospitalizations for cirrhosis-related complications result in inpatient specialty care, and the current hepatology workforce cannot meet the demand of patients with liver disease nationwide, particularly in less densely populated areas and in community-based practices not affiliated with academic centers. Telemedicine, defined as the delivery of health care services at a distance using electronic means for diagnosis and treatment, holds tremendous promise to increase access to broadly specialty …

In this paper, we will define the exponential form of a neutrosophic complex number. We have proven some characteristics and theories, including the conjugate of the exponential form of a neutrosophic complex number, division of the exponential form of a neutrosophic complex numbers, multiplication of the exponential form of a neutrosophic complex numbers. In addition, we have given the method of changing from the exponential to the algebraic form of a complex number.
