2020 Pediatric Research Forum Session
This youth advocacy effort follows the story of high school student Emelia Pino and Healers of Tomorrow leaders as they work to address health inequities in her home of Zia Pueblo, one of the communities hit hardest in New Mexico by the pandemic.
While taking part in The Healers of Tomorrow Program, a mentorship program for underrepresented high school students, Emelia conveyed the hardships her people were experiencing to program leaders. This kickstarted allied relief efforts in response to rising COVID-19 cases. Emilia and her mentors worked alongside several organizations, including NHI and Protect New Mexico, to gather PPE and …

The Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test (SWM) is an objective test of sensation that is commonly used to identify sensory impairments in the hand.
Objective:
To determine if male and female subjects aged 25 and older with no history of sensory symptoms or known neurologic conditions would feel the 2.83 (normal) Semmes Weinstein monofilament, and if a relationship between the detected monofilament and grip strength exists.
Outcome Measures:
Ability to detect the 2.83 (normal) monofilament at the fingertip. Participants were dichotomized into two groups: the 2.83 “normal” (ability to detect the 2.83 monofilament in three or …

Introducing The Self-Cleaning Filtration For Water Quality Sensors (Sc-Flawless) System, Aashish Sanjay Khandelwal
Introducing The Self-Cleaning Filtration For Water Quality Sensors (Sc-Flawless) System, Aashish Sanjay Khandelwal
Civil Engineering ETDs
Sensor-based, semi-continuous observations of water quality parameters have become critical to understanding how changes in land use, management, and rainfall-runoff processes impact water quality at diurnal to multi-decadal scales. While some commercially available water quality sensors function adequately under a range of turbidity conditions, other instruments, including those used to measure nutrient concentrations, cease to function in high turbidity waters (> 100 NTU) commonly found in large rivers, arid-land rivers, and coastal areas. This is particularly true during storm events, when increases in turbidity are often concurrent with increases in nutrient transport. Here, we present the development and validation of …

Researching Paraguayan Guarani: The Minoritized Language Of The Majority, Josefina Bittar Phd Candidate
LAII Events
Paraguayan Guarani, one of the native languages of Paraguay, is spoken by more than 80% of the country’s population. However, despite government and societal efforts, Spanish remains the language of prestige, required for education opportunities and social mobility. In this presentation, Josefina Bittar will discuss the characteristics of Guarani-Spanish bilingualism in Paraguay, the importance of documenting linguistic practices in the country, and the role of researchers in challenging the population’s internalized prejudices about languages and their speakers.

Remote Assessment Of Functional Mobility And Strength In Older Cancer Survivors: Protocol For A Validity And Reliability Study, Cindy K. Blair, Elizabeth Harding, Carla Herman, Tawny Boyce, Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Sally M. Davis, Anita Y. Kinney, Vernon S. Pankratz
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Older cancer survivors, faced with both age- and treatment-related morbidity, are at increased and premature risk for physical function limitations. Physical performance is an important predictor of disability, quality of life, and premature mortality, and thus is considered an important target of interventions designed to prevent, delay, or attenuate the physical functional decline. Currently, low-cost, valid, and reliable methods to remotely assess physical performance tests that are self-administered by older adults in the home-setting do not exist, thus limiting the reach, scalability, and dissemination of interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This paper will describe the rationale and design for a study to …

BACKGROUND: Infants with prenatal substance exposure are at increased risk for developmental problems, with self-regulatory challenges being some of the most pronounced. The current study aimed to investigate the extent to which prenatal substance exposure (alcohol, opioids) impacts infant self-regulation during a relational stressor and the association between self-regulation and infant affect.
METHODS: Participants were 100 mother-child dyads recruited prenatally (Mean = 23.8 gestational weeks) and completed the Still Face Paradigm (SFP) when infants were 5 to 8 months of age (Mean = 6.9 months) as part of an ENRICH prospective birth cohort study. Based on prospective repeated assessment of …

For decades, there have been government funded services to provide healthcare telephonically to remote sites both on the earth and in the air. This capability has evolved into what we now know as telehealth. The use of telehealth dramatically accelerated as a result of concerns for patient and healthcare provider safety during the SARS-CoV2 pandemic. Similarly, concerns regarding transmission of infection have required medical schools to provide robust, easily accessible virtual education options. At short notice, faculties have had to develop new telehealth focused curriculum components. However, telehealth, online education, and internet enabled research should not be simply a new …

γ9δ2T cells play a major role in cancer immune surveillance, yet the clinical translation of their in vitro promise remains challenging. To address limitations of previous clinical attempts using expanded γ9δ2T cells, we explored the clonal diversity of γ9δ2T cell repertoires and characterized their target. We demonstrated that only a fraction of expanded γ9δ2T cells was active against cancer cells and that activity of the parental clone, or functional avidity of selected γ9δ2 T cell receptors (γ9δ2TCRs), was not associated with clonal frequency. Furthermore, we analyzed the target-receptor interface and provided a 2-receptor, 3-ligand model. We found that activation was …

Notch signaling is often involved in cancer cell initiation and proliferation. Aberrant Notch activation underlies more than 50% of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL); accordingly, chemicals disrupting Notch signaling are of potential to treat Notch-dependent cancer. Here, we developed a flow cytometry-based high-throughput assay to identify compounds that disrupt the interactions of DNA and RBPJ, the major downstream effector of Notch signaling. From 1492 compounds, we identified 18 compounds that disrupt RBPJ-DNA interactions in a dose-dependent manner. Cell-based assays further revealed that auranofin downregulates Notch-dependent transcription and decreases RBPJ-chromatin interactions in cells. Most strikingly, T-ALL cells that depend on Notch …

The evolution of multidisciplinary team-based care for women with placenta accreta spectrum disorder has delivered stepwise improvements in clinical outcomes. Central to this overall goal is the ability to limit blood loss at surgery. Placement of inflatable balloons within the pelvic arteries, most commonly in the anterior divisions of the internal iliac arteries, became popular in many centers, at the expense of prolonging surgical care and with attendant risks of vascular injury. In tandem, the need to expose pelvic sidewall anatomy to safely identify the course of the ureters re-popularized the alternative strategy of ligating the same anterior divisions of …

With the advent of small molecule inhibitors, sustained responses in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients have been achieved. Ibrutinib, an inhibitor of Bruton’s tyr- osine kinase (BTK), is a particularly potent treatment for CLL, with overall response rates of 82% in treatment-naive and 43% in relapsed-refractory patients [1]. These responses are accompanied by transient lymphocytosis in 50–70% of patients and a concomitant reduction of tumor burden in lymphoid organs [2]. We have recently demonstrated that the high-risk, CD49d-high CLL subgroup [3] displays reduced lymphocytosis and minor lymph node shrinkage upon ibru- tinib treatment [4]. CD49d is the alpha subunit of …

Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) is integrated into the evaluation of decedents in several American medical examiner offices and medicolegal death investigative centers in many other countries. We retrospectively investigated the value of PMCT in a series of firearm homicide cases from a statewide centralized medical examiner's office that occurred during 2016. Autopsies were performed or supervised by board-certified forensic pathologists who reviewed the PMCT scans prior to autopsy. PMCT scans were re-evaluated by a forensic radiologist blinded to the autopsy findings and scored by body region (head-neck, thoracoabdominal, and extremities). Injury discrepancies were scored using a modified Goldman classification and …

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the commonest biliary tract cancer with an ill-defined etiology. We examined the role of Cd+2 exposures in a primary human gallbladder (GB) cell line model in this study. Cd+2 exposures induced decreased cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, altered Akt/ERK signaling pathway activation, PGE2 and COX-2 expression in a human primary gallbladder epithelial cell model. Pharmacological inhibitors were used to determine the key drivers of elevated COX-2 expression due to Cd+2 exposure. Our results show Cd+2 causes a dose- dependent reduction in GB cell viability (EC50 value – 18.6 μM). Dose-dependent activation of phospho-Akt and …

INTRODUCTION Temporary blood component shortages are common in some areas of the United States (US) and can usually be managed with short-term solutions.1However, a widespread, long-term shortage that leaves the blood industry with insufficient blood components to serve urgent medical needs requires additional mitigation strategies. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represents the greatest threat to the blood supply in recent memory. If the COVID-19 pandemic continues unchecked, the downward trend in blood collections will likely con-tinue.2Hospital transfusion services may be faced with unprecedented long-term shortages in blood products. A …
