Mucosal Immune System Of African Lungfish, Ryan D. Heimroth Nov 2020

Mucosal Immune System Of African Lungfish, Ryan D. Heimroth

Biology ETDs

Conquering land was an apex moment in the evolution of vertebrates. Physiologically, the first vertebrates to transition to life on land had to adapt in order to survive in an oxygen-rich environment where gravitational forces and limited water prevailed. Several extant vertebrates including anurans and lungfish, survive droughts by undergoing aestivation. Unfavorable environmental conditions trigger lungfish to aestivate. Aestivation is a process of metabolic torpor wherein the fish will encase itself in a mucus cocoon and not move until favorable environmental conditions (food and water) are reintroduced. Aestivation can be reproduced in laboratory settings and, thus, lungfish can be used …

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to assess whether instructor-prepared mind maps increased knowledge, exam scores and final grades in undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory human nutrition course. Two sections of the same class (one intervention, one control) were taught by the same student instructor/investigator. Mind maps were posted online for the intervention class following each chapter lecture. Students tracked their study methods, including whether they used the mind maps. Exam scores and final grades were analyzed and compared for differences in learning and course performance between groups. There were no statistically significant differences in exam scores or …

Artificial Intelligence Enabled Distributed Edge Computing For Internet Of Things Applications, Georgios Fragkos Nov 2020

Artificial Intelligence Enabled Distributed Edge Computing For Internet Of Things Applications, Georgios Fragkos

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Artificial Intelligence (AI) based techniques are typically used to model decision-making in terms of strategies and mechanisms that can conclude to optimal payoffs for a number of interacting entities, often presenting competitive behaviors. In this thesis, an AI-enabled multi-access edge computing (MEC) framework is proposed, supported by computing-equipped Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to facilitate Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Initially, the problem of determining the IoT nodes optimal data offloading strategies to the UAV-mounted MEC servers, while accounting for the IoT nodes’ communication and computation overhead, is formulated based on a game-theoretic model. The existence of at least one Pure …

Prefilling Mylar Capacitor Edge Margins To Improve Capacitor Reliability And Size, Chase Kayser Nov 2020

Prefilling Mylar Capacitor Edge Margins To Improve Capacitor Reliability And Size, Chase Kayser

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Typical high-voltage, wound film-foil capacitors have large edge margins filled with air to prevent breakdown between foil electrodes. This arrangement is inefficient for energy density and leaves a volume where particulates may settle in an uncontrolled atmosphere. The reliability and size of high-voltage, wound film-foil capacitors could be improved by adding a material with higher breakdown strength into the edge margins. This will not only improve reliability and size but also act as a barrier to prevent foreign object debris (FOD), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and water from damaging the capacitor’s performance. This paper will discuss the process of determining …

The Role Of Hud In Alternative Splicing And Alternative Polyadenylation In The Brain, Rebecca M. Sena Nov 2020

The Role Of Hud In Alternative Splicing And Alternative Polyadenylation In The Brain, Rebecca M. Sena

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) regulate several processes in the cell, including alternative splicing and alternative polyadenylation. Hu proteins, a class of ELAV-like RBPs, are crucial for proper development and maintenance of the nervous system. Several Hu proteins, including HuD, have been shown to regulate alternative splicing and alternative polyadenylation of neuronal transcripts. However, previous studies have relied on molecular techniques to analyze individual transcripts, which do not provide a global overview of the transcriptome. The purpose of this study was to develop a bioinformatics pipeline to analyze splicing and polyadenylation using RNA-sequencing data. Once the pipeline was developed, it was …

Federal troops have not been used to guard against election violence since the years after the Civil War when the Army was stationed across the South to put down the Ku Klux Klan and protect Black voters, said Joshua Kastenberg, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and military judge who teaches military law at the University of New Mexico School of Law.

“Presidents have historically been very reluctant to call out the Army. They’ve used the authority briefly and responsibly,” he said. But, he cautioned, there are almost no checks on the president’s power to send in troops. Challenges in …

To address critical health equity issues facing racially and ethnically diverse populations, it is essential to have researchers from similarly diverse backgrounds. Such researchers provide different perspectives that may lead to distinct research questions, novel interpretation of findings, and innovative recommendations for health promotion practice. There is a continuing need to increase the number of researchers leading health research studies who are from underrepresented minority populations (URMs). The literature demonstrates the effectiveness of mentoring for career development and the need to hone existing mentoring models. The TREE Center developed an innovative model for building capacity among early stage investigators, with …

The right to sue and defend in the courts of the several states are essential privileges of citizenship. Eight generations ago, this right was unavailable to black people, because descendants of African slaves were never intended to be citizens. Then, and for years to come, local governments failed to protect African Americans from violence and discrimination and were sometimes complicit in those violations.

Qualified immunity was born in 1982 when the Supreme Court decided Harlow v. Fitzgerald. With an outflow of questionable court decisions shielding officers solely because they act under color of state law, it is time for the …

Understanding Solar Wind Formation By Identifying The Origins Of In Situ Observations, Samantha Wallace Oct 2020

Understanding Solar Wind Formation By Identifying The Origins Of In Situ Observations, Samantha Wallace

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Over the past century, significant progress has made on the subjects of two fundamental unresolved questions in Heliophysics, namely 1) how is the solar corona heated to multi-million-degree temperatures, and 2) how is the solar wind formed, from its origin, to its release and acceleration. While the two are in many ways intertwined, this dissertation focuses on the latter. Our current understanding of solar wind formation has developed largely through relating the general origins of the observed solar wind on global spatial scales to the corresponding observed speed at 1 au. However, we are now at a point where long-standing …

Plasmon-Induced Color And Photochemistry, Paul J. Gieri Oct 2020

Plasmon-Induced Color And Photochemistry, Paul J. Gieri

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

In recent decades, metallic nanostructures have been extensively studied for a variety of applications due to the ability to support surface plasmons. These excitations, which consist of collective resonant oscillations of the conduction electrons, couple strongly to visible light, confining it into subwavelength volumes. In the first part of this work, we study the optical response of metallic nanostructures supported by metallic substrates. We demonstrate that these systems support a charge transfer plasmon mode, whose frequency is primarily determined by the geometry of the contact area between the nanoparticle and the substrate. In the following part, we exploit this knowledge …
