An Analysis Of Growth Of The Community Integration Psychological Score In An Ethnically Diverse Population Experiencing Homelessness In A Permanent Supportive Housing Program Using Hierarchical Mixed Modeling, Leah Hollis Puglisi Nov 2020

An Analysis Of Growth Of The Community Integration Psychological Score In An Ethnically Diverse Population Experiencing Homelessness In A Permanent Supportive Housing Program Using Hierarchical Mixed Modeling, Leah Hollis Puglisi

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Hierarchical models are becoming increasingly common in epidemiological and psychological research. When analyzing data from such studies, the nested structure of the data must be taken into account. Mixed modeling in conjunction with hierarchical mixed modeling allows researchers to ask broad questions about the population of interest. Modeling under restricted maximum likelihood estimation (REML), as opposed to full maximum likelihood estimation (ML), increases the accuracy of estimates for the random effects in the model. We use hierarchical mixed modeling under REML estimation to analyze which factors increase “community integration”, a concept and a construct developed and used in the mental …

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Boron has been detected on Mars [Gasda et al., 2017, Das et al., 2019, 2020] within calciumsulfate veins found within clay-rich rocks on Mars by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. Boron plays a vital role in stabilizing ribose on Earth and has been suggested as a key requirement for life [Scorei et al., 2006, 2012; Furukawa et al., 2013, 2017; Becker et al., 2019]. Additionally, boron readily adsorbs to phyllosilicate clay minerals and is often associated with biologic processes in clay soils. The discovery of boron on Mars in proximity to phyllosilicate …

Albuquerque Journal Interviews Joshua Kastenberg On New Benchmarks For Evidence Rules, Joshua Kastenberg, Isabella Alves Nov 2020

Albuquerque Journal Interviews Joshua Kastenberg On New Benchmarks For Evidence Rules, Joshua Kastenberg, Isabella Alves

Faculty Scholarship

Joshua Kastenberg, University of New Mexico School of Law professor, said the opinion means eyewitness testimony will have to undergo more corroboration before being allowed into evidence. For example, he said there will also have to be surveillance camera footage or more than one person accurately describing the suspect before eyewitness testimony can be admitted.

Studies over the past three decades show that people are terrible at giving eyewitness testimony on people who are outside their own demographic, Kastenberg said. Police, generally unconsciously, played into that.

Before, federal law put eyewitness credibility in the “lap of the jury,” Kastenberg said. …

Atom Trapping And Its Role On The Nucleation & Growth Of Platinum Nanoparticles, Deepak Kunwar Nov 2020

Atom Trapping And Its Role On The Nucleation & Growth Of Platinum Nanoparticles, Deepak Kunwar

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Diesel oxidation catalysts deactivate due to Pt sintering, a major problem in automotive industries. To make sure they operate effectively throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, automotive industries are putting an excessive amount of Pt. There is a need to develop a catalyst that serves long term performance with minimal use of Pt. Jones et al.1 demonstrated that ceria traps Pt atoms. His work generated some logical and valid questions such as what is the mechanism for the formation of anomalously large Pt particles? What is the upper limit of Pt metal loading in the form of single atoms …

Exploring Language Endangerment And Language Change In Tohono O'Odham, Keiko F. Beers Nov 2020

Exploring Language Endangerment And Language Change In Tohono O'Odham, Keiko F. Beers

Linguistics ETDs

Endangered languages are often assumed to undergo grammatical losses. Grammaticalization – which is concerned with how grammar evolves – has been largely overlooked in such contexts. In this dissertation, I address two questions: 1) Do grammaticalization processes in endangered languages look as they do in more robustly spoken languages, and 2) are there other changes that require explanations outside of grammaticalization?

The language that I consider is Tohono O'odham (Uto-Aztecan), spoken in Arizona (US) and Sonora (Mexico), which has become endangered over the last century due to coercive assimilationist policies. I conduct a comparative analysis of pre-existing oral data over …

Oral Health Literacy Status Of School Staff Members In Southern Minnesota, Gabrielle Sullivan Nov 2020

Oral Health Literacy Status Of School Staff Members In Southern Minnesota, Gabrielle Sullivan

Dental Hygiene ETDs

Purpose:

This study evaluated the oral health literacy OHL of school staff in Southern Minnesota. OHL is the degree to which individuals can understand health information. Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in school aged children, and school staff members spend a large portion of the day with children. Therefore, it is important for all school staff members to have a moderate or higher OHL status.

Methods:

The survey used a convenience sample of school staff in 3 different schools in southern Minnesota and used the REALD-30 OHL instrument with slight modification, to simplify data collection.

Results:

Fifty …

Radial Basis Densities And The Density Functional-Based Atom-In-Molecule: Designing Charge-Transfer Potentials, Godwin Amo-Kwao Nov 2020

Radial Basis Densities And The Density Functional-Based Atom-In-Molecule: Designing Charge-Transfer Potentials, Godwin Amo-Kwao

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Classical potentials that are capable of describing charge transfer and charge polarization in complex systems are of central importance for classical atomistic simulation of biomolecules and materials. Current potentials—regardless of the system—do not generalize well, and, with the exception of highly-specialized empirical potentials tuned for specific systems, cannot describe chemical bond formation and breaking. The charge-transfer embedded atom method (CT-EAM), a formal, DFT-based extension to the original EAM for metals, has been developed to address these issues by modeling charge distortion and charge transfer in interacting systems using pseudoatom building blocks instead of the electron densities of isolated atoms. CT-EAM …
