Experimental Validation Of A 3d-Printed Millimeter Wave/Thz Power Combiner, Jacob C. Giese
Experimental Validation Of A 3d-Printed Millimeter Wave/Thz Power Combiner, Jacob C. Giese
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The terahertz band (THz) in the electromagnetic spectrum is an untapped resource that possesses unique features for nondestructive methods of material imaging and detection. However, little advancements have been made in regard to a practical long range portable THz device. The solution proposed is an oversized cylindrical waveguide termed Power Combiner, designed to combine 12 azimuthally aligned rectangular waveguides to produce power levels suitable for threat detection at secure distances. This paper explores the physical parameters of the power combiner and the power distribution network and creates the 12 signals that allow for modification at the input of the power …
Cultivating The Future: Globalized Competition And Environmental Interactions In The New Mexico Chile Industry, Holly Patricia Brause
Cultivating The Future: Globalized Competition And Environmental Interactions In The New Mexico Chile Industry, Holly Patricia Brause
Anthropology ETDs
Despite the importance of chile to New Mexico, the future of the chile industry in the state is uncertain. Since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, chile producers in New Mexico have struggled to compete in a globalized marketplace. Additionally, predicted environmental problems, like impending water shortages and climate change, cast further doubt about the industry’s future. In this dissertation, I show how the New Mexico chile industry has become a binational endeavor. I examine the multiple future-making projects that are being undertaken by individuals and groups involved in the chile industry as they …
Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Computer Science ETDs
Automated approaches for parameter and algorithm selection greatly democratize fields such as machine learning, saving time and money as hiring experts can be prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, anomaly detection is difficult to automate due to subjectivity and class imbalance. An anomaly detection system is presented that incorporates human-in-the-loop techniques and is dynamic, scalable, and able to work with non-annotated data. By focusing on meta-features of the input data, the system can intelligently choose the most promising anomaly detection methods. The system is agnostic to the medium of data; it only expects the data to be sequential in nature.
Feasibility Study Of A Structural Electrolyte Containment Ring For Use In Thermal Batteries, Teal Harbour
Feasibility Study Of A Structural Electrolyte Containment Ring For Use In Thermal Batteries, Teal Harbour
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The feasibility of a new thermal battery separator design utilizing a structural machined MACOR® ceramic is explored. The cylindrical ceramic “separator ring” maintains separation of cell electrodes while containing a LiCl-KCl molten salt electrolyte. Finite element analysis (FEA) results show the separator ring can withstand mechanical and thermal loading conditions representative of a thermal battery environment. Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was used to characterize impedance mechanisms. EIS data was also used to calculate and show conductivities of the experimental separators are comparable to a traditional pellet. Although discharge testing resulted in high current-pulse resistivities and low delivered capacity, the work …

Yet another delivery from this thesis research is a …
Monte Carlo Perturbation Analysis Of Fuel Temperature Variations In The Mcnp Model Of The Annular Core Research Reactor, Melissa Andrea Moreno
Monte Carlo Perturbation Analysis Of Fuel Temperature Variations In The Mcnp Model Of The Annular Core Research Reactor, Melissa Andrea Moreno
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR) Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) model is used for a variety of computational calculations ranging from reactor kinetics metrics to safety analyses. To understand the dominant source of uncertainty within the model, perturbations in temperature were applied to individual ACRR MCNP fuel rods. Assigning random temperatures, selected uniformly, from the operational temperature ranges of the fuel enables a study of uncertainty effects based on temperature variations. Stochastic mixing was used to blend the cross-sections of the desired temperatures using the MCNP continuous and Thermal Neutron Scattering Treatment (S(α,β)) libraries in ENDF/B-VII.1. The uncertainty quantification process …
Probing The Galactic Agb Population Through Infrared And Sio Maser Emission, Megan O. Lewis
Probing The Galactic Agb Population Through Infrared And Sio Maser Emission, Megan O. Lewis
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) are of low to intermediate mass and have reached the end stages of stellar evolution. The mass-loss that stars undergo at this phase enshrouds the central star in a circumstellar envelope (CSE) that redistributes most of the stellar light into the infrared (IR) regime of the spectrum. In the CSEs of oxygen-rich AGB stars molecules including SiO form, and under certain conditions maser emission from SiO can make AGB stars bright beacons at radio frequencies (e.g., 43 and 86 GHz). SiO masers are ideal observational probes of AGB sources, providing data on their …
Side Channel Attack Counter Measure Using A Moving Target Architecture, Jithin Joseph
Side Channel Attack Counter Measure Using A Moving Target Architecture, Jithin Joseph
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
A novel countermeasure to side-channel power analysis attacks called Side-channel Power analysis Resistance for Encryption Algorithms using DPR or SPREAD is investigated in this thesis. The countermeasure leverages a strategy that is best characterized as a moving target architecture. Modern field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) architectures provide support for dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR), a feature that allows real-time reconfiguration of the programmable logic (PL). The moving target architecture proposed in this work leverages DPR to implement a power analysis countermeasure to side-channel attacks, the most common of which are referred to as differential power analysis (DPA) and correlation power analysis …
Μηδὲν Ἄγαν: Conviviality And Excess In The Symposium, Lauren B. Alberti
Μηδὲν Ἄγαν: Conviviality And Excess In The Symposium, Lauren B. Alberti
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This multi-disciplinary project demonstrates that the archaic and classical Greek symposium was a moralizing and educative space that governed the consumption of wine through the social protocol of the metron “measured restraint.” In Chapter One, I investigate sympotic drinking behavior contextualized within this concept of the metron as described by Theognis. Utilizing literary evidence and art historical representations of drinking at the symposium, I argue that a specified drinking protocol encouraged the community to benefit the male aristocratic citizen and ultimately their place in the polis. The symposium was an educative and moralizing space that encouraged communal harmony and …
William Blake's Satan As A Hermaphrodite, Genevieve E. Hartsock
William Blake's Satan As A Hermaphrodite, Genevieve E. Hartsock
Art & Art History ETDs
Depictions of Satan had started off with a grotesque and monstrous figure, but depictions of and attitudes towards the character shifted with the publication of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. However, although the aesthetics of the figure shifted, I argue that William Blake’s renderings of Satan continue the tradition of rendering them as monstrous and grotesque in a new way, in that Blake renders Satan as a hermaphrodite. Attitudes towards hermaphrodites has shifted over time, but the attitude of regarding them as unnatural or monstrous harkens back to ancient Greece, and these attitudes were only furthered with time and the advent …

Sex Differences In Running Performance: The Role Of The Anaerobic Speed Reserve In Female Middle-Distance Running, Lydia Charlotte Hallam
Sex Differences In Running Performance: The Role Of The Anaerobic Speed Reserve In Female Middle-Distance Running, Lydia Charlotte Hallam
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Middle-distance running is an interesting domain in which to study sex differences in athletic performance because of the varied metabolic, mechanical and tactical demands. The Anaerobic Speed Reserve (ASR) represents the difference between an athlete’s maximal sprint speed (MSS) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS). The ASR and MSS are key determinants of elite male 800m performance (Sandford et al., 2018); however, the role of the ASR in female middle-distance running is unclear, considering sex differences in physiology, mechanics and competition factors. We found that sub-groups of female middle-distance runners could be distinguished using the ASR and speed reserve ratio (SRR …

Exploring The Interaction Of Amphiphilic Mycobacterial Lipoarabinomannan With Lipoproteins: Implications For Blood-Based Diagnosis, Shailja Jakhar
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Currently, over one-third of the global population is infected with tuberculosis (TB), one of the world’s most deadly infectious diseases. The current gold standard for TB diagnosis is microbiological culture, which can take up to 6-8 weeks, which is not conducive to timely treatment. There are no reliable diagnostics for TB. Disease manifestation and outcome of diagnostic tests for TB are influenced by co-morbidities such as HIV co-infection, further complicating diagnostics development. Thus, there is a need for reliable diagnostics for TB. This is especially true in pediatric populations where the differential disease presentation further complicates outcomes.

A Quantitative Investigation Of Ovarian Cancer Disparities, Jimmy Valdes
A Quantitative Investigation Of Ovarian Cancer Disparities, Jimmy Valdes
Sociology ETDs
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most deadly form of cancer, and the leading cause of death among gynecologic malignancies in US women. Although this literature has empirically investigated parts of this phenomenon, several major gaps exist. First, this literature rarely attempts to theoretically contextualize the findings by explaining broader etiologies of ovarian cancer. It also does not attempt to explain how or why the social determinants of ovarian cancer disparity, primarily socioeconomic status and race, may be interrelated. Lastly, few studies have attempted to better understand the distinct ways in which Hispanics, as an ethnic group, fit into the ovarian …

Erotic Ecology In Ovid's Heroides, Noah Holt
Erotic Ecology In Ovid's Heroides, Noah Holt
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This project demonstrates that natural imagery in the Heroides is an emotionally charged space that exists as more than just background description. The first chapter explores how descriptions of the pastoral landscape reflect the shifting love affair of Oenone and Paris: when the love is reciprocal, the pastoral landscape is idyllic and peaceful; once Oenone realizes her attempt to win Paris back is futile, the pastoral landscape becomes more antagonistic. Ultimately, Oenone’s rusticitas proves to be incompatible with Paris’ newly acquired cultus, which I suggest can be read as an expression of the opposition between modern refinement and renewal …
Heterogeneously Integrated Photonic Modulators And High-Volume Manufacturing Of Related Technologies, Nicholas Adam Boynton
Heterogeneously Integrated Photonic Modulators And High-Volume Manufacturing Of Related Technologies, Nicholas Adam Boynton
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Silicon photonics is an attractive approach to cost-effective integrated optics due to the infrastructure established for silicon CMOS electronics. The material properties of silicon however are not ideal for optical devices. Specifically, silicon lacks the ability to easily produce light-emitting devices due to its indirect bandgap, and has a centro-symmetric crystal structure which does not facilitate the Pockels effect required for linear modulation. Conversely, lithium niobate is an excellent optical material due to its strong Pockels effect but, is a notoriously difficult material to process. One method of simultaneously overcoming the material limitations of silicon and the fabrication limitations of …

The Changing and Transitioning Name Narrative project is a replicated study from the Name Narrative Project (2014) by Montoya, Vasquez, and Martínez. The changing and/or transitioning of names relates to a Decolonial Embodiment Process (DE.E.P.) that speaks to an internal process of how individuals break away from colonial powers. Furthermore, the study highlights nine (eight volunteers and the author’s) Name Narratives to investigate their realities that express an individual experience and shared standpoints. Importantly, the changing and/or transitioning of names is not an act to disrespect parents or name givers, but a profound self-love indication that is represented through materialize …
Congress And The Fall Of Jacobo Arbenz: A Narrative Of Cold War Fears And Redemption, David Erik Lindwall
Congress And The Fall Of Jacobo Arbenz: A Narrative Of Cold War Fears And Redemption, David Erik Lindwall
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis will examine the statements and actions of U.S. Congressmen and Senators between 1945 and 1996 to understand how they influenced White House policy towards the regime of Jacobo Árbenz. It will show how legislators equated growing communist influence in the Árbenz regime to Cold War struggles going on in Korea, Indochina and Eastern Europe, and how Congressmen from both parties drew on those fears to pressure Presidents Truman and Eisenhower to "neutralize the threat," leading to Árbenz’s fall. When violence erupted again in Guatemala in 1960-1996, Congress reinterpreted the story of Árbenz as Republicans and Democrats were polarized …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Regioregular Cross-Conjugated Poly(Thienylene Vinylene)S, Yousef M. Katba Bader
Synthesis And Characterization Of Regioregular Cross-Conjugated Poly(Thienylene Vinylene)S, Yousef M. Katba Bader
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Poly(thienylene vinylene)s (PTVs) is special a class of conjugated polymers (CPs) that show remarkable optoelectronic properties and promising applications. The main reason that hinders their application, is the lack of synthetic methodologies for preparing new derivatives with various functionality. Developing new PTVs with improved structures based on structure-property relationships increases the potential of utilizing this type of polymers in advanced applications. Most available preparation methods lead to regio-random PTVs (ra-PTVs) structures due to the different placement of the sidechain in the polymer backbone, which results in reduced crystallinity. In this study, we developed a novel strategy that produces a series …

Functional Changes In Fortified Places: Strategy And Defensive Architecture In The Medieval And Early Modern Eras, Scott Kirk
Anthropology ETDs
Castles – defined as the fortified residences of a militarized elite class – are a global, cross-cultural phenomenon rather than a historically particular development in medieval Europe. Pairing Niche Construction Theory (NCT) with the Lévi-Straussian concept of the House, this research combines architectural, statistical, and geospatial analyses for a sample of castles from medieval European, western colonial, and nonwestern societies to show: (1) castle building is a recurring feature of competition in stratified pre-industrial societies, (2) geography and topography constrain castle location and function, and (3) changes in castle placement, design and elaboration reflect the changing nature of social, economic …
Fundamental Dislocation Solutions For Infinite And Semi-Infinite Media, Luo Li Mr
Fundamental Dislocation Solutions For Infinite And Semi-Infinite Media, Luo Li Mr
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Much research has gone into determining stress fields of dislocation, as the understanding of dislocations is fundamental to understanding metal or crystal plasticity. In this thesis, the stress field of a rectangular dislocation loop in an infinite isotropic solid is developed for a Volterra-type dislocation with three non-zero Burgers vector components. Also, the stress and strain fields of a rectangular dislocation loop in an isotropic solid, which is a semi-infinite medium, are obtained here for a Volterra-type dislocation. Moreover, analytical and numerical verifications of the developed stress/strain fields are performed. This is done by ensuring the satisfaction of the equilibrium …
