"Possessed": The Phenomenology Of Immersive Theatre, Shannon M. Flynn May 2021

"Possessed": The Phenomenology Of Immersive Theatre, Shannon M. Flynn

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Using phenomenology as a lens of analysis, I investigate how immersive theatre engages audiences in a more direct and sensory way than traditional theatre. In a proscenium theatre the action is seen from the same angle. The theatre itself becomes a phenomenon in audience’s minds, each performance subtly influencing how the audience perceives the next. I investigate how relationships between audience and performers are altered in immersive experiences with no delineation between the space audience and actors occupy. The phenomenological idea of frontality places immersed audiences in positions where they are able to explore a constantly changing perspective of the …

Hippocampal Functional Activity Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Ryan E. Harvey May 2021

Hippocampal Functional Activity Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Ryan E. Harvey

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is among the most common developmental insults to the nervous system and is characterized by spatial memory disruption. There is a pressing need to identify physiological alterations that help explain this memory impairment. The hippocampal (HPC) formation and connected regions are a compelling candidate for this purpose as they are vital for navigation, spatial memory, and memory consolidation. This document is broken up into 3 main parts, a detailed review of the prior literature followed by several experiments. First, It starts out with a comprehensive review on spatial behavioral impairments following PAE and the synaptic & …

Cross-Pressured: Agriculture, Immigration, And Congressional Gop Position-Taking, Jared William Clay May 2021

Cross-Pressured: Agriculture, Immigration, And Congressional Gop Position-Taking, Jared William Clay

Political Science ETDs

Why are Republican (GOP) members of the Congress bucking their party’s positions on immigration? I argue this is due to agriculture’s large-scale production needs for an immigrant, Latino workforce. Consequently, this immigration influx can excite racial threats which can provoke opposition to immigration and minority interests. This raises an interesting question: Do the agricultural transition and an immigrant workforce cross-pressure district opinion and MCs’ position-taking on immigration and Latino interests more broadly? I assert agriculture’s economic pressure mitigates racial threats, which produces greater support of immigration and Latino issues. Using data from the Congressional Cooperative Election Survey, Congress.gov, Census of …

“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace May 2021

“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace

History ETDs

“Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” examines home ownership and suburban development over the last one hundred years in the borderlands, American West, and Sunbelt regions. In this dissertation I argue that mobility shaped urban planning, neighborhood design, and architectural identity in the Sunbelt over the course of the twentieth century. “Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” places architectural identity at the center of this dissertation discussion to understand the origins of the Sunbelt as a geographic and intellectual space. I focus in particular on smaller cities in the intermountain West---New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and California---an area that has …

My Story To Tell: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Instructional Coaching For Culturally Responsive Pedagogy Through Multicultural Literature In Elementary Classrooms, Annette Melissa Fiedler

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this qualitative Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices was to explore and tell a personalized account of myself as an instructional coach striving for culturally responsive pedagogical practices through multicultural literature in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms. Two research questions were designed to address this autoethnographic exploration. Research Question 1 was: What tensions do I experience as a living contradiction in the work as an instructional coach for elementary teachers of diverse learners who need culturally responsive literacy instruction? Research Question 2 was: How do my personal understandings of these tensions honor my commitment to enlarging teachers’ culturally …

Anomaly Detection In Smart Grids Using Multi-Task Gaussian Processes, Aman Karra May 2021

Anomaly Detection In Smart Grids Using Multi-Task Gaussian Processes, Aman Karra

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The availability of data and computing infrastructure in smart grids creates new challenges that invite solutions based on algorithmic techniques. A particular problem of interest in these systems is fault detection. It is difficult to characterize faults because of the number of different ways in which these faults can occur. Moreover, simulating a faulty mode of the system can be expensive. This work addresses fault detection by framing it as the task of detecting anomalies in the sensor data of smart grids. The assumption made is that faults are events of low probability. But no reliance is made on any …

Molecular Characterization Of A Unique Population Of Human Cortical Interneurons; Implications For Primate-Specific Development, Crina Peterson May 2021

Molecular Characterization Of A Unique Population Of Human Cortical Interneurons; Implications For Primate-Specific Development, Crina Peterson

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The human brain consists of 86 billion neurons compared to rodent brain, which consists of 75 million neurons, and the underlying mechanisms for the increased complexity of the primate cortex are not fully elucidated. However, an increase in specific cell populations, including calretinin-expressing (CALB2/CR) interneurons (INs), has been identified. In my thesis work, I demonstrate that human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) differentiated to neurons by default patterning give rise to this CR population in vitro, providing a method to study their development.

Chapter I reviews cortical development and hPSCs as an appropriate proxy for studying human cortical development. Chapter …

Exploring The Relationship Between Vehicular Emissions And Traffic Operations At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Abiral Dulal May 2021

Exploring The Relationship Between Vehicular Emissions And Traffic Operations At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Abiral Dulal

Civil Engineering ETDs

Most roadway transportation modes still run on petroleum fuels. Petroleum fuels are major sources of air pollutants, including hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2, which are together called NOx), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter of size(PM10) and2 and BC). Mitigating pollution is a serious issue, and therefore, it is the engineers' and planners' responsibility to study and reduce emissions as much as possible. Emission levels are generally high at street intersections, which are places where vehicles tend to accelerate, decelerate, and idle. Emission levels at intersections are …

Shift Register Puf Implementation On An Fpga, Sriram Thotakura May 2021

Shift Register Puf Implementation On An Fpga, Sriram Thotakura

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this thesis, a novel shift register-based physical unclonable function (PUF), called SRP, is proposed. The PUF is implemented on an FPGA and leverages the internal delay variations introduced by within-die process variations that occur within the Look-up tables (LUTs), routing and switches of the FPGA. PUFs are designed to generate bitstrings and keys on-the-fly that are device-specific (unique), random and reproducible. PUFs eliminate the need for a specialized (secure) non-volatile memory(NVM) to store the secret keys. This reduces the total cost of chips and systems, particularly those used in the Internet of Things, where it is common for systems …

Bayesian Methods In Operational Testing: Enhancing Testing Through Combining Information, Victoria R C Sieck May 2021

Bayesian Methods In Operational Testing: Enhancing Testing Through Combining Information, Victoria R C Sieck

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

When developing a system, considering system performance from a user perspective can be done through operational testing|assessing the ability of representative users to accomplish tasks with the system in operationally representative environments. This critical process can be expensive and time-consuming. We show how to leverage an existing design of experiments (DOE) process to construct a Bayesian adaptive design. This method allows for interim analyses using predictive probabilities to stop testing early for success or futility. Furthermore, operational environments are directly used in product evaluation. Representative simulations demonstrate reductions in necessary test events. Next, priors are built using developmental testing data. …

Investigations Of Geochemical Variations With Depth At The First 15 Drill Sites On Mars Analyzed By The Chemcam Instrument Onboard The Curiosity Rover And Supported By Laboratory Studies And Analog Research At The Valle Grande Paleolake, Valles Caldera, New Mexico, Usa, Ryan S. Jackson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The ChemCam instrument collected a wealth of data during the first 15 drill campaigns and on the distribution of trace elements at Yellowknife Bay, Mars. The drill sites investigation showed that most sites were geochemically homogenous down the depth of the drill hole. Two sites in the Stimson formation contained a vertical gradient of decreasing silica down > 3 cm. This gradient may be the result of groundwater flow and is likely recent, within 2.3 Ma. The trace element research was grounded with an analog study at the Valle Grande paleolake in New Mexico. We observed progressive alteration in the minerology …

How Bojack Horseman Got Too Real: Audience Engagement And A Critique Of Capitalism, Camille Le Pioufle

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

What can a cartoon tell us about the state of capitalist societies? This study examines the case of Netflix adult animated TV show BoJack Horseman (2014-2020) with the aim of understanding the mechanisms at play in the formation of the critique of capitalism. It investigates the narrative and cinematographic devices employed by the show to construct a realistic portrayal of American capitalist system and its harmful consequences on individuals and society in general.

Through the analysis of realism, self-referentiality and intertextuality, the star system, and processes of subsumption and commodification, this work comes to the conclusion that BoJack Horseman ‘got …

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky May 2021

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky

Anthropology ETDs

It has long been assumed that fishes were unimportant in the diet of past Pueblo people in the U.S. Southwest. Yet, small numbers of fish remains are consistently recovered from Late pre-Hispanic/Early Historic archaeological sites in the Middle Rio Grande of New Mexico. The end of drought conditions may have impacted food choice and fishing decisions during this time. I use behavioral ecology to understand how fishing could have been an optimal food-getting strategy for Ancestral Pueblo farmers. Stable isotope analysis offers a way to account for environmental change. I provide a refined 13C Suess correction model to support …

A Practical Methodology To Detect, Quantify And Characterize Experimental Uncertainties In The Dynamic Testing Of Structures, James L. Woodall May 2021

A Practical Methodology To Detect, Quantify And Characterize Experimental Uncertainties In The Dynamic Testing Of Structures, James L. Woodall

Civil Engineering ETDs

This thesis investigates the uncertainty in the experimental context of structural dynamics. This thesis proposes a method to estimate both the effect of boundary conditions, as well as two different methods to detect the location of sensors on a specimen. Firstly, this thesis proposes a technique to predict the dynamic behavior of any point along a cantilever beam with an uncertain transverse elastic restraint. Secondly, this thesis investigates the estimation of the location of a sensor given the output data of a physical experiment with two different methods. Small errors in the sensor location may go unnoticed in the frequency …

Women’S Resilience Through Bullying Vernaculars: A Visual Vernacular Discourse Analysis, Karla Ibet Ochoa

Communication ETDs

This study shows the importance of understanding the vernaculars of resilience in relationship to bullying. In this thesis, I explore the public expressions of resilience from three women of color who experienced bullying and have become anti-bullying activists. I explore how the women construct public vernaculars of resilience and perform resilience. I drew on Feminist Standpoint Theory to conduct a visual vernacular discourse analysis of public expressions. The vernaculars discovered through analyzing the public expressions were resilience, self-expression, activism, and all voices matter. These vernaculars and performances reveal women’s feminist standpoints through the work that they do and release to …

Building Asian American And Black Solidarity For Racial Justice In Today’S America, Vinay Harpalani, Sunu P. Chandy, Sholanna Lewis, Frank H. Wu

Faculty Scholarship

About the Panel: Although there have been tensions, including those tied to colorism, between the Asian American and Pacific Islander and Black communities in America, there has been an equally long history of mutual support and collaboration between these two communities. How does anti-Blackness in the AAPI community impact the work of building solidarity with Black activists? In this conversation, we highlight our common ground so that Asian American and Black social justice communities can push forward our collective needs to fight racial injustice and other forms of discrimination in this country.

Biopsychosocial Multidisciplinary Treatment Impact On Risk Of Opioid Misuse, Michael A. Palacio May 2021

Biopsychosocial Multidisciplinary Treatment Impact On Risk Of Opioid Misuse, Michael A. Palacio

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

From 1999 to 2014, over 165,000 persons in the United States died from an overdose related to prescription opioids (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). In response, the CDC released guidelines that propose nonpharmacologic and nonopioid pharmacologic therapy as preferred methods for chronic pain control (Dowell et al., 2016). The purpose of this project was to examine the biopsychosocial multidisciplinary treatment impact on risk of opioid medication misuse among adult chronic opioid-dependent noncancer pain clinic patients with and without a psychiatric disorder. Engel’s (1977) biopsychosocial model was used to evaluate whether multidisciplinary treatment impacted the risk of opioid …

Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto May 2021

Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto

Communication ETDs

This study aimed to explore effective message strategies to promote COVID-19 prevention behaviors among college students. Due to the fewer symptoms and lessened impact of COVID-19 in this population, young adults tend to have low perceived risk that results in low engagement in preventive behaviors. Also, some people may hold beliefs or values that are contrary to preventive behaviors. Thus, applying message framing theory, this study tested the effects of perceived risk and cultural orientation on adherence to prevention behaviors. The results showed that perceived risk and cultural orientation were associated with intention to maintain physical distance and wearing a …

Hbme1 And Ck19 Expression In Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm With Papillary-Like Nuclear Features (Niftp) Vs Other Follicular Patterned Thyroid Lesions, Qandeel Sadiq, Radhika Sekhri, Daniel T Dibaba, Qi Zhao, Shweta Agarwal May 2021

Hbme1 And Ck19 Expression In Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm With Papillary-Like Nuclear Features (Niftp) Vs Other Follicular Patterned Thyroid Lesions, Qandeel Sadiq, Radhika Sekhri, Daniel T Dibaba, Qi Zhao, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Thyroid neoplasms with follicular architecture can have overlapping morphologic features and pose diagnostic confusion among pathologists. Various immunohistochemical stains have been investigated as potential diagnostic markers for PTC, among which HBME1 and CK19 have gained popularity. Non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) poses similar diagnostic challenges with interobserver variability and is often misdiagnosed as adenomatoid nodule or follicular adenoma. This study aims to evaluate expression of HBME1 and CK19 in NIFTPs in comparison to other well-differentiated thyroid neoplasms and benign mimickers.

METHOD: Seventy-three thyroid cases diagnosed over a period of 3 years at Methodist University Hospital, …
