In Pursuit Of Comparability: Evaluating Influence And Interaction Among Components Of The Home Range Estimation Process In Chimpanzee Datasets, Jillian J. Rutherford
In Pursuit Of Comparability: Evaluating Influence And Interaction Among Components Of The Home Range Estimation Process In Chimpanzee Datasets, Jillian J. Rutherford
Geography ETDs
The home range (HR) is a fundamental manifestation of an animal’s spatial behavior, but its study has been limited by unclear, unreliable, and unstandardized methodological approaches for measurement. The lack of a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of components of the HR estimation process has hampered consensus over best practices for collecting and analysing movement data. This leads to wide variation in practice, thwarting direct comparability between HR estimates and curtailing the cohesive power of cross-study findings necessary for testing hypotheses and developing appropriate conservation and management strategies. In this thesis I explore the influence of and interaction between common …

Project ECHO Bibliography
INTRODUCTION: Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a tele-education outreach model that seeks to democratize specialty knowledge to reduce disparities and improve health outcomes. Limited utilization of endocrinologists forces many primary care providers (PCPs) to care for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) without specialty support. Accordingly, an ECHO T1D program was developed and piloted in Florida and California. Our goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of an ECHO program focused on T1D and improve PCPs' abilities to manage patients with T1D.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Health centers (ie, spokes) were recruited into the ECHO T1D pilot through …

Quick Pivots: Maintaining An Agile Approach To Outreach During An Evolving Crisis, Holly M. Surbaugh
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic during the spring and summer of 2020, the University Libraries piloted enhanced virtual outreach initiatives, including an online event series and scaled-up social media activity. The Summer of Sci Fi (SoSF) consisted of three Zoom-facilitated programs that offered fun activities designed to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. Numerous “quick pivots” were necessary to accommodate unpredictable circumstances throughout the pilot implementation. This experience has demonstrated the advantages of approaching outreach with an agile stance, particularly during a crisis.

Hand Of The Potter, Hand Of The State: Pottery Production And Control In Tawantinsuyu, James A. Davenport
Hand Of The Potter, Hand Of The State: Pottery Production And Control In Tawantinsuyu, James A. Davenport
Anthropology ETDs
In empires, material culture plays an important role in creating and maintaining state power and legitimizing imperial rule. Through their form and decoration in imperial styles, these objects convey messages about state power, yet their production is often decentralized and carried out by subjects. This dissertation asks the question, how do imperial authorities organize the production of material culture? This question is addressed through a study of one category of material culture—Inka imperial pottery—from the site of Pachacamac, in Peru.
The Inka empire, called Tawantinsuyu, was a territorial empire spanning over 2 million km2 in Andean South America …

Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the native immune system that play a pivotal role in host defense and immune surveillance. While the conceptual view of NK-neoplasms is evolving, little is known about the rare NK lymphoblastic leukemia (NK-LL), which remains as a provisional entity in the 2016 WHO Classification. The goal of this study is to characterize NK-LL cases and compare with other CD56 co-expressing acute leukemias. We identified 105 cases, diagnosed as NK-LL (6), CD56+ acute undifferentiated leukemia (AUL) (6), CD56+ T-lymphoblastic leukemia (T-LL) (51), and CD56+ acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (42). Compared to AUL patients, NK-LL …

Total carbon dioxide (TCO2) is the acid–base determinant included in a venous plasma basic metabolic panel. TCO2 represents the sum of bicarbonate ion, dissolved CO2 gas, carbonic acid, carbonate ion, and CO2 combined with the amino group of plasma proteins to form carbamino compounds [1]. Bicarbonate concentration in arterial or venous blood gases is obtained by solving the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for bicarbonate [1]. TCO2 and bicarbonate have been used interchangeably in the past [2]. After institutional review board approval, we carried a physician survey addressing knowledge of this topic in two institutions (Table 1). …

Client Heart Rate Variability In Motivational Interviewing For Alcohol Use, Brigitte R. Stevens
Client Heart Rate Variability In Motivational Interviewing For Alcohol Use, Brigitte R. Stevens
Psychology ETDs
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a useful tool for clinical practice and substance use research, as it may provide insight into liability for relapse or development of addiction, as well as provide indicators of recovery outcomes and response to treatment. Psychotherapy would benefit from an integrated understanding of physiological regulation systems such as what are measured by HRV, as HRV is linked to psychopathology and substance use disorders.
HRV was measured in non-treatment-seeking adult drinkers as they underwent a motivational interviewing (MI) session. Subjects’ HRV from the interview was then regressed on therapist MI-consistent behaviors. The subjects’ drinking at both …

Changes In Pain During Buprenorphine Maintenance Treatment Among Patients With Opioid Use Disorder And Chronic Pain, Karlyn A. Edwards
Psychology ETDs
Objective: Opioid use disorder (OUD) and chronic pain frequently co-occur. Little is known about changes in pain during buprenorphine/naloxone (BUP/NX) maintenance and whether outcomes vary by pain levels. The current study examined changes in pain intensity and pain interference over 12 weeks of BUP/NX maintenance among participants with OUD and chronic pain (N=194). Differences in outcomes were assessed during BUP/NX maintenance (week 12) and two months following a BUP/NX taper (week 24). Method: Data from Phase 2 of the Prescription Opioid Addiction Treatment Study were used. Two latent transition models were conducted to characterize profiles and transitions between …
Intolerable Histories And Imperfect Narratives: Nationhood, Identity, And The Integrity Of Law In Post-Vichy France And Beyond, Kaela S. Holmen
Intolerable Histories And Imperfect Narratives: Nationhood, Identity, And The Integrity Of Law In Post-Vichy France And Beyond, Kaela S. Holmen
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The principal aim of this thesis project is to examine the socio-legal context of the Vichy regime in World War II France, and to provide an understanding of how that context informed, and continues to inform, the integrity of French nationhood. With Ernest Renan’s oubli serving as a framework for the solidification of nationhood, I will demonstrate that the betrayals to French law and custom that were committed in an attempt to right the wrongs of the Vichy resulted in an imperfect forgetting, and ultimately, a more fragmented national sense of self. I contend that this imperfect oubli resulting from …

Three Essays On Responsibility And The Transition To Adulthood In Comparative Perspective, Andrew Lee Breidenbach
Three Essays On Responsibility And The Transition To Adulthood In Comparative Perspective, Andrew Lee Breidenbach
Sociology ETDs
This hybrid dissertation examines three related topics on the concept of responsibility regarding adulthood and transitioning into this status: a) youth conceptions of responsibility for delayed home-leaving, b) the relationship between family responsibility and transition timing, and c) global conceptions of parental responsibilities to children. First, I find that youth typically see external, structural causes preventing earlier home-leaving over internal, more culturally-motivated causes leading individuals to prefer staying at home longer. Second, I find that total housework and specifically the “female-typical” interior work of cooking, cleaning and caring speeds up parenthood while delaying the achievement transitions of finishing school and …

Post-Discharge Healthcare Utilization In Infants With Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, Shikhar Shrestha, Melissa H Roberts, Jessie R Maxwell, Lawrence M Leeman, Ludmila N Bakhireva
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
The opioid epidemic in the United States has led to a significant increase in the incidence of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS); however, the understanding of long-term consequences of NOWS is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate post-discharge healthcare utilization in infants with NOWS and examine the association between NOWS severity and healthcare utilization. A retrospective cohort design was used to ascertain healthcare utilization in the first year after birth-related discharge using the CERNER Health Facts® database. ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnostic codes were used to identify live births and to classify infants into two study groups: NOWS and uncomplicated …
Impact Of Riverside Drains On Surface-Water And Ground Water Interactions In The Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico: Implications To The Sustainability Of Native Cottonwoods (Populus Deltoides Ssp. Wislizenii) And Native Species, Gerardo Rodriguez
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Middle Rio Grande riparian zone, named the Bosque, provides cultural, aesthetic, environmental, recreational, and historical value to the residents of the Middle Rio Grande valley. Most of the Bosque has not experienced successful native cottonwood (Populus deltoides ssp. wislizenii) recruitment since the completion of the Cochiti reservoir and most of the Bosque cottonwood forest is senescing. This decline of the native species in the Bosque can be attributed to highly managed hydrology of the riparian zone. The levees and agricultural drains managed by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD), that borders both sides of the river, also affect …

Excerpt:
Lysette Romero Córdova, who worked as an appellate attorney before becoming an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, said the statute is important because “what good is a right without a remedy?”
She said only one other state — Colorado — has enacted a similar law.
“What we are doing is novel and historic,” she said. “It’s good we are doing something innovative.”
She said it’s too early to tell what the law’s ramifications will be.
“You can have well-intentioned legislation, but you just don’t know how it’s going to work out in individual …
New Mexican Parents’ Perspectives Regarding Public Schools’ Communication And Language Services For Their Elementary-Aged Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder During Covid-19, Susanna E. Cole
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
This study explored five New Mexican parents’ perceptions of changes to the public school-based communication and language services for their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent advantages and disadvantages of these changes. The parents participated in semi-structured interviews between October 2020 and February 2021. All of the parents reported their children’s services had eventually gone completely remote, but one had secured some in-person instruction time for her child by the time of her interview. Three parents reported reduction in school-based communication and language services for which they sought to compensate through other means. …

This thesis examined the geospatial and temporal grazing patterns of domesticated livestock to model individual-level exposure potential to abandoned uranium mine (AUM) waste in a tribal community in the Southwest United States. Lotek Litetrack Global Positioning System (GPS) collars collected data at 20-minute-intervals for 2 flocks of sheep and goats during the Spring and Summer of 2019. Depending on the flock and individual animals, tracking time ranges from 10 days to four months. This research developed a GIS-based exposure potential framework that built on existing methodologies in time geography, GIS, and exposure mapping. This thesis aims to: 1) classify GPS …
The Chevron Capitate-Trapezoid Joint: A Case Report, Dean W. Smith
The Chevron Capitate-Trapezoid Joint: A Case Report, Dean W. Smith
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Anatomical variations to the human skeletal system are common and frequently reported in the literature. The structures around the hand and wrist are no exception, and these variations can affect ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, arteries, joints, and bone morphology. Musculoskeletal health care providers must be familiar with normal, individual variations when encountered during patient care and diagnostic imaging. In some instances, morphological variations have resulted in differences in kinematics, while others have been found in association with certain medical conditions. We discuss an unusual variation of the capitate-trapezoid joint. To the best of our knowledge, no prior studies have previously …
Chronic Complex Volar Dislocation Of The Middle And Ring Finger Metacarpophalangeal Joint: A Case Report, Fernando Moreno, Jordan T. Carter, John J. Pisquiy, Michael M. Polmear
Chronic Complex Volar Dislocation Of The Middle And Ring Finger Metacarpophalangeal Joint: A Case Report, Fernando Moreno, Jordan T. Carter, John J. Pisquiy, Michael M. Polmear
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint dislocations are uncommon injuries. Most dislocations occur dorsally, with volar dislocations being rarer owing to the architecture of the joint. Because of the rarity of the condition, there is no accepted standard treatment for these injuries. The most commonly affected digit is the ring finger, followed by the middle finger and then the small finger. Management depends on the complexity of the injury, with complex dislocations requiring open reduction owing to interposed soft tissue and repair of damaged ligaments and tendons. We describe a 52-year-old man with chronic MCP dislocation who underwent unsuccessful open reduction and subsequently …

Distal Radial Shaft Malunion And Distal Radioulnar Joint Instability 8 Years After Postoperative Plate Failure: A Case Report, Allicia O. Imada, Casey D. Mcdonald, Deana Mercer
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Radius shaft fractures often require operative treatment after skeletal maturity to restore functional range of motion. If the radial bow is not anatomically restored, pain and instability can occur from bony impingement and disruption of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). We describe a 25-year-old woman with a radius shaft malunion and DRUJ instability. Eight years prior, at the age of 17, she underwent open reduction and internal fixation for a radial shaft fracture with subsequent reinjury at 10 weeks postoperatively. The reinjury was treated nonoperatively, and the patient went on to have painful range of motion and DRUJ instability. Radiographs …
Bisphosphonate Associated Atypical Femur Fracture And Contralateral Impending Atypical Femur Fracture In A Pediatric Patient With Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Case Report, Benjamin Albertson, Taylor Polander, Selina Silva
Bisphosphonate Associated Atypical Femur Fracture And Contralateral Impending Atypical Femur Fracture In A Pediatric Patient With Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Case Report, Benjamin Albertson, Taylor Polander, Selina Silva
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Atypical femur fractures are rare, low-energy fractures that involve a specific constellation of radiographic findings. These fractures have been well described in adult osteoporotic patients on long-term bisphosphonates; however, little to no literature exists on atypical femur fractures in pediatric patients on long-term bisphosphonates. The use of bisphosphonates as treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta is common to reduce fracture rate and improve bone mineral density. We describe a 15-year-old adolescent boy with type I osteogenesis imperfecta on long-term bisphosphonate therapy. He presented with an atypical right femur fracture and an impending left femur fracture. To the authors’ knowledge, these findings represent …

Western Journal of Orthopaedics
A previously healthy 16-month-old boy presented with 5 days of fever, a limp favoring his right side, and swelling and erythema of the dorsal left foot and left great toe. Contrasted magnetic resonance imaging revealed septic arthritis of the left knee, the interphalangeal joint of the left great toe, and the left subtalar and ankle joints. He had osteomyelitis of the left talus and intraosseous abscess formation in the left calcaneus. Cultures of the blood, left knee synovial fluid, and abscess fluid all showed growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He was subsequently diagnosed with X-linked agammaglobulinemia with a novel mutation in …
Reconstruction Of A Chronic Quadriceps Tendon Rupture After Multiple Failed Repair Attempts: Technique And Case Report, Lauren Edge, Elizabeth Mcleod, Om Pathak, Justin Bartley
Reconstruction Of A Chronic Quadriceps Tendon Rupture After Multiple Failed Repair Attempts: Technique And Case Report, Lauren Edge, Elizabeth Mcleod, Om Pathak, Justin Bartley
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Rupture of the quadriceps tendon is a relatively uncommon injury that requires prompt surgical intervention to restore the function of the extension apparatus of the knee. Early, definitive surgical intervention generally produces excellent results. In the case of delayed surgery or re-rupture, the tendon is often retracted and scarred, thus complicating subsequent repairs and resulting in poor outcomes. We describe a middle-aged man who presented 4 years after his initial quadriceps rupture, following two repair attempts that failed. Upon presentation, he was unable to perform any active extension at the knee, and he ambulated with the use of a hinged …

Bilateral Peroneal Tendon Subluxation Associated With Complex Hindfoot Fractures: A Case Report, Benjamin C. Howse, Benjamin D. Packard, Rick J. Gehlert
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
A 41-year-old man presented to the emergency department after crashing his dirt bike and sustaining bilateral subtalar fracture dislocations. The left talus underwent open reduction internal fixation. At his first postoperative visit, the patient was found to have bilateral peroneal tendon subluxation (PTS). This case report discusses the cause of PTS and the challenges associated with accurate identification and diagnosis of this injury. We review the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with injury, the negative impact on clinical outcomes, and the association between PTS and hindfoot trauma.
