Machine Learning Based Dynamic Power Dispatching And Smoothing Using Hybrid Energy Storage System For Renewable Energy Systems, Bhuvaneshwarr Ramalingam
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The stochastic fluctuations from Renewable Energy Resources (RER) have a great influence on power quality and off-grid communities. A combination of the different storage systems is accessible for RER generation intermittency and to bring about finest smoothing operating cycle compared to sole Energy Storage System (ESS). Additionally, energy management in Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) creates an uncertainty during power smoothing operation. This research materializes, an intelligent mechanism for power smoothing and dispatch with the introduction of hybridized storage that can accommodate the unpredictable behavior of RER under dynamic load. A feed-forward neural network is proposed as a power smoothing …
Rethinking The Plra: The Resiliency Of Injunctive Practice And Why It’S Not Enough, Allison Freedman
Rethinking The Plra: The Resiliency Of Injunctive Practice And Why It’S Not Enough, Allison Freedman
Faculty Scholarship
During the latter part of the twentieth century, prison populations in the United States increased exponentially and the nation became notorious for mass incarceration. Despite what many viewed as a broken prison system, in 1996 Congress passed the Prison Litigation Reform Act (“PLRA”), with the avowed purpose of hindering prisoners and their advocates from bringing civil rights actions to challenge prison conditions, laws, and policies. To accomplish this, Congress curbed courts’ most powerful remedial tool—injunctive relief. As a result, early scholarship predicted that injunctive practice would become a useless tool in prison reform litigation.
Instead, twenty-five years after Congress passed …
Pt-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Bhj Photovoltaic Devices, Yunjeong Kwon
Pt-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Bhj Photovoltaic Devices, Yunjeong Kwon
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The current state of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices involve series of small molecular or polymeric systems that can absorb light from the solar spectrum in concert with another material that acts as an acceptor material. Together these materials serve to generate and split bound excitation species then transport the separate charges to their respected electrode. Several limitations have restricted the widescale use of these materials. Since these devices have their genesis in organic materials the OPV devices inherit short exitonic lifetimes, narrow absorption window and a lack of precise control over the morphology. To overcome these limitations, additional molecular engineering …
Interaction Of A Shock Wave With A Particle Curtain, Daniel M. Freelong
Interaction Of A Shock Wave With A Particle Curtain, Daniel M. Freelong
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
This thesis presents an experimental study of the interaction of a normal shock wave with a sparse curtain of particles. Soda lime particles with a nominal diameter of 40 micrometers are used to form the curtain. A high speed camera captured several segments of the particle curtain flow from the front view, including the early formation stages. The frames from the video segments were then extracted into individual sequential images. Properties were found using the images such as the velocity fields, time evolution of multiphase Atwood number, and perturbation growth. Volume fractions were derived from mass discharge measurements and particle …

Effect Of Degradation Environment And Relative Humidity On Fracture Of Cement, Patience L. Raby
Effect Of Degradation Environment And Relative Humidity On Fracture Of Cement, Patience L. Raby
Civil Engineering ETDs
Concrete serves in all forms of humidity conditions (arid climates to submerged conditions) and can be exposed to many different forms of degradation. To better understand the effects that degradation and humidity have on concrete as a composite, the effects on cement alone must first be better understood. This research aims to examine the significance of degradation (calcium leaching or sulfate attack), in addition to relative humidity, on cracking and fracture behavior of cement. Flexure and fracture tests were performed on cement exposed to varying periods of each form of degradation as well as various humidities. Samples were exposed to …
Evaluation Of Fine And Coarse Graded Asphalt Mixes, Md Mehedi Hasan
Evaluation Of Fine And Coarse Graded Asphalt Mixes, Md Mehedi Hasan
Civil Engineering ETDs
During the last 20 years, asphalt pavements were built in New Mexico (NM) and around the country using mostly Superpave coarse graded mixes as opposed to fine graded mixes. This is because coarse mix uses larger aggregates with good interlocking and requires less asphalt binder than a fine mix, while both mixes fulfill the Superpave criteria. Recently, it was observed nationally that the Superpave coarse graded mixes have good field rutting performances but poor cracking performances. It is hypothesized that fine graded mix can help improve pavement cracking performances. The idea is, the fine mixes would have less air voids …

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Tremolite At High-Pressure Conditions And Its Implication For The Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity, Soisiri Charin
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Tremolite is the calcium magnesium amphibole that widely occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks of the crustal and upper mantle lithosphere, especially in the greenschist facies to amphibolite facies of ultramafic assemblages. The stability field of amphibole reaches 3-4 GPa and 1100-1200°C depending on water content and cation substitutions giving rise to amphibole to occur in highly variable compositions. This P-T condition, corresponding to the depth about 80-120 km, coincides with the depth range that a negative velocity gradient usually found within most stable cratonic lithospheres. This depth range is seismically called Mid-lithosphere discontinuity (MLD). The geologic processes that might …
The Efficacy Of Brief Attitudinal Familism And Body Image Interventions On Diet And Exercise Self-Monitoring Adherence In Hispanic/Latinx Women, Kelsey Nicole Serier
The Efficacy Of Brief Attitudinal Familism And Body Image Interventions On Diet And Exercise Self-Monitoring Adherence In Hispanic/Latinx Women, Kelsey Nicole Serier
Psychology ETDs
Addressing health disparities in overweight/obesity is a key public health issue. Research supports the efficacy of behavioral weight loss (BWL) interventions, however, adherence to these interventions is often low, which negatively impacts outcomes. The efficacy of BWL interventions is consistently lower among communities of color. Thus, there is a strong need to design and test interventions that are culturally sensitive and address predictors of BWL adherence in diverse groups. Previous research suggests that for Hispanic/Latinx women with overweight/obesity, attitudinal familism (“family comes first”) and body dissatisfaction were informative in predicting BWL adherence. The current study builds on this previous research …

Chitin, a major component of fungal cell walls, has been associated with allergic disorders such as asthma. However, it is unclear how mammals recognize chitin and the principal receptor(s) on epithelial cells that sense chitin remain to be determined. In this study, we show that LYSMD3 is expressed on the surface of human airway epithelial cells and demonstrate that LYSMD3 is able to bind chitin, as well as β-glucan, on the cell walls of fungi. Knockdown or knockout of LYSMD3 also sharply blunts the production of inflammatory cytokines by epithelial cells in response to chitin and fungal spores. Competitive inhibition …

Of Mindfulness And Men: Mindfulness And Quality Of Life Of Distressed Prostate Cancer Survivors, Christopher G. Ford
Of Mindfulness And Men: Mindfulness And Quality Of Life Of Distressed Prostate Cancer Survivors, Christopher G. Ford
Psychology ETDs
Many prostate cancer (PCa) survivors experience on-going distress that affects their quality of life (QOL). Psychosocial interventions designed to address such distress frequently include mindfulness components. To better characterize the relation between mindfulness and distress, an ethnically diverse sample (n = 120) of PCa survivors in New Mexico and New Jersey endorsing at least minimal distress completed a one-time survey. Greater mindfulness was related to less psychological distress (r = -.40) and better mental health-related QOL (r = .35). However, mindfulness explained little additional variance after controlling for relevant demographic, medical, and psychosocial variables. Other variables (e.g., social isolation and …

Facemask Use During High Intensity Interval Exercise In Temperate And Hot Environments., Andrew D. Wells, Zachary Fennel, Jeremy Ducharme, Abdulaziz Masoud, Jon Houck, Bryanne Bellovary, Michael Deyhle, Yu Yu Hsiao, Fabiano Amorim, Christine Mermier
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
BACKGROUNDː Facemask use has been recommended during physical activity to prevent spreading and contracting the virus that causes COVID-19. There have been concerns about negative physiological and perceptual effects of mask-wearing, especially during higher-intensity activities. Emerging research suggests there is a minimal impact of wearing a surgical mask on physiological responses across a wide array of exercise intensities and modalities. However, there are no published data regarding the impact of surgical mask use in hot or temperate environments during high intensity interval exercise (HIIE). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of surgical mask use during …
Compact Sealed Spark Gaps, Seth Miller
Compact Sealed Spark Gaps, Seth Miller
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Spark gaps have always been a good solution for high power switching. They are simple, cheap, handle a large amount of Coulomb transfer, and are more forgiving to work with compared to solid-state alternatives. Even with solid-state switching advancing a long way since the 20th century, spark gaps outperform them in terms of peak power handling capabilities, Coulomb transfer, and make them attractive for higher power systems. Most lab settings use spark gaps because the cost is low, and they can be repaired if they break or wear out as opposed to a semiconductor alternative. While this technology is great …
Directional Integrity And Landmark Anchoring Of The Head Direction Cell System In The Tgf344-Ad Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Laura E. Berkowitz
Directional Integrity And Landmark Anchoring Of The Head Direction Cell System In The Tgf344-Ad Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Laura E. Berkowitz
Psychology ETDs
Spatial navigation and memory are impaired in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are prominent behavioral markers of preclinical AD. The TgF344-AD rat model of AD exhibits similar behavioral and pathological features to humans and thus serves as an excellent model to investigate the mechanisms underlying spatial impairment in AD. Brain regions in the parahippocampal cortex contain spatially responsive pyramidal cells that support spatial navigation and memory including place cells, grid cells, and head direction cells. Furthermore, GABAergic interneurons in these regions support precise temporal organization of spike dynamics and may play a critical role in maintaining reliable …

Eeg Features Of Explore-Exploit Decision-Making In Alcohol Use Disorder, Ethan Campbell
Psychology ETDs
Little research has assessed explore-exploit behavior in addiction using drug cues and even fewer studies have measured the neural activity underlying these behaviors. The present study aims to explore brain mechanisms of disordered decision-making in alcohol use disorder (AUD) through electroencephalography (EEG) during performance of a novelty bandit task with alcohol imagery and using a validated computational model of explore-exploit dynamics. Individuals with AUD (n = 28) and age and sex-matched controls (n = 27) showed differences in choice behavior and showed differences in EEG activity as a function of exploratory behavior, chosen stimulus type, and explore-exploit computational …

Multiple Baseline Interrupted Time Series: Describing Changes In New Mexico Medicaid Behavioral Health Home Patients’ Care, Jessica Reno
Multiple Baseline Interrupted Time Series: Describing Changes In New Mexico Medicaid Behavioral Health Home Patients’ Care, Jessica Reno
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In 2016, the CareLink New Mexico behavioral health homes program began enrolling Medicaid recipients with the goal of increasing care coordination, improving access to services, and decreasing long-term costs of care for adults with serious mental illness (SMI) and children with severe emotional disturbance (SED). To evaluate these aims, a retrospective interrupted time series study using Medicaid claims data was designed. First, a comparable subset of non-enrolled individuals was selected from the pool of Medicaid recipients with SMI or SED using propensity score matching. Then, segmented regression was applied to three outcomes: total Medicaid charges, number of outpatient behavioral health …
Mud Binds Mitotic Kinesins Non-Claret Disjunctional And Pavarotti In D. Melanogaster, Vincent Cutillas
Mud Binds Mitotic Kinesins Non-Claret Disjunctional And Pavarotti In D. Melanogaster, Vincent Cutillas
Biology ETDs
The cytoskeleton is crucial to maintaining an even distribution of chromosomes and subsequently to divide the cell during every cell cycle. During mitosis, spindle structure and movement dictates how chromosomes will be separated and act as the sole mechanism for even distribution of these chromosomes. The cytoskeleton also remains a major cellular component during cytokinesis when the cell must cleave the membrane in order to form two resulting daughter cells. Both processes require an extensive use of the immobile structures of the cytoskeleton, such as microtubules (MTs), intermediate filaments, and microfilaments, but also the mobile units, which are the motor …

Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran
History ETDs
Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519) utilized various forms of artistic and literary media throughout his reign to control his public image after his death. This thesis focuses on a manuscript project that has historically received little scholarly attention. The Ambraser Heldenbuch, produced between 1504 and 1517, preserves German heroic epics, many of which would otherwise be lost today. The manuscript has been highly valued for its literary and linguistic significance, but this thesis argues that the entire project sheds light on Maximilian’s plan to immortalize not only his own reputation, but also that of his family. This thesis focuses on …
The Effect Of Repetition Tempo On Training Volume, Heart Rate, Blood Lactate, And Muscle Oxygenation When Time Under Tension Is Matched In Recreationally-Trained Lifters, Zachary A. Mang
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
It is commonly reported that resistance training (RT) with slower-repetition tempos leads to greater metabolic stress because they increase the time under tension (TUT) during sets of exercise. However, little information is available on the effect of different repetition tempos on blood lactate concentration, muscle oxygenation, and heart rate (HR) when TUT and proximity to concentric muscular failure are matched during lower-body RT. In a repeated-measures, cross- over design, 11 recreationally-trained females (n = 5) and males (n = 6) performed five sets of belt squat under the following conditions: Slow-repetition tempo (SLOW; 10 reps with 4:2 second tempo) and …

The Saudi Ministry of Education and Saudi universities have taken significant steps toward meeting the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by reviewing the performance of teacher preparation programs in Saudi universities to improve the quality of teacher preparation, including for those who teach students with intellectual disability (ID). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of recently graduated unplaced teachers (RGUTs) specializing in ID toward their preparation, and to identify how these programs can be continuously improved. Five themes emerged based on the analysis of their responses in the interviews: (a) the RGUTs’ motivations to become …
Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper
Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper
Communication ETDs
Within the expansive literature on diabetes in other disciplines, the communication lens focuses on the biomedical perspective and emphasizes doctor-patient and patient-provider relations. While there are limited studies that focus on the psychosocial aspect of diabetes morbidity, there is a gap in the existing literature across disciplines on communication about diabetes using both qualitative and participatory methods that are church-based. Because diabetes disproportionately and adversely impacts communities of color that report high levels of religious influence, there is an dire need for more effective interventions to ameliorate this chronic illness that causes high levels of morbidity and mortality.

Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin Iii
Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin Iii
English Language and Literature ETDs
Despite his own high level of literacy and education, the Venerable Bede (672/3–735) inhabited a world in which nearly all personal, social, educational, and political discourse was conducted orally. A thorough understanding of his works will require an understanding of this discourse, but attempts to apply broad theories of “orality” derived from other cultures to early medieval England have repeatedly foundered. This dissertation establishes a set of guiding principles to produce a more nuanced and localized model of discourse in Bede’s England and observes a variety of ways oral and literate forms of rhetoric were employed by political actors in …

In its briefings, the Class in this appeal, in spite of the evidence, evokes the myth of a great conspiracy between operators and marketers, and it advances a theory that threatens impermissible economic and underground waste of natural gas resources. The language of the parties' oil and gas leases, on the other hand, sets up bargained-for arrangement that enables the parties to share in the benefits of stripper gas production and promotes conservation of the state's natural gas reserves.
Petrology And Geochemistry Of Evolved Achondrites: Planetesimal Mantles And Crusts, Zoltan Vaci
Petrology And Geochemistry Of Evolved Achondrites: Planetesimal Mantles And Crusts, Zoltan Vaci
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Melting and differentiation are fundamental to early solar system evolution on planetary bodies that accreted enough material to heat up radioactively or through impacts and breach their solidi. Partially and fully melted material is present in the meteorite record in the form of primitive achondrites and achondrites, which are fragments of planetesimals that underwent heating events in the first few million years of solar system history. Although the vast majority of this material is mafic or ultramafic, new evolved samples, recovered in the last few decades, are pushing the petrologic and geochemical boundaries of planetesimal melting, differentiation, and crust formation. …

Monitoring Damage Occurrence, Post-Peak Crack Propagation And Air Permeability In Concrete Using The Brazilian Indirect Tension Test, Angel M. Padilla
Civil Engineering ETDs
This research aims to investigate the relationship between stress, damage, crack propagation, and permeability evolution in concrete. A novel experimental test method is presented that enables monitoring post-peak cracking behavior of concrete using the Brazilian tension test by slowing crack propagation while concurrently measuring permeability and monitoring damage propagation using acoustic emission techniques. The modified Brazilian test method utilizes spring supports in parallel to the test specimen to off-load the test specimen incrementally to slow down the post-peak crack propagation. A vacuum flow system is attached to the rear side of the concrete during loading to measure apparent air permeability …
