Monitoring Of Structural Quality Under Construction Using 3d Point Cloud Data, Xinxing Yuan Mar 2022

Monitoring Of Structural Quality Under Construction Using 3d Point Cloud Data, Xinxing Yuan

Civil Engineering ETDs

Inspection of infrastructure under construction has become an active research topic in the past few decades. Due to rising costs and safety concerns of current inspection methods, automated inspection methods are proposed. In this context, this dissertation has developed a framework that uses 3D point cloud data from the bridge under construction and evaluates the design specifications and the strength capacity of the structure while is being built. This study presents a slicing algorithm for automatically evaluating rebar placement using 3D point cloud data. The outcomes of this research provide structural engineering with (i) automatic inspection of reinforcement during construction; …

Cognitive Reserve And Mild Cognitive Impairment: Predictors And Rates Of Reversion To Intact Cognition Vs Progression To Dementia, Maryam Iraniparast, Yidan Shi, Ying Wu, Leilei Zeng, Colleen J. Maxwell, Richard J. Kryscio, Philip D. St John, Karen S. Santacruz, Suzanne L. Tyas

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the effect of education or other indicators of cognitive reserve on the rate of reversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to normal cognition (NC) or the relative rate (RR) of reversion from MCI to NC vs progression from MCI to dementia. Our objectives were to (1) estimate transition rates from MCI to NC and dementia and (2) determine the effect of age,

METHODS: We estimated instantaneous transition rates between NC, MCI, and dementia after accounting for transition to death across up to 12 assessments in the Nun Study, a cohort study of religious …

Exploring Physical Educators' Efficacy Beliefs, Perceptions Of Importance And Openness For Social And Emotional Learning, Caitlin Olive, Karen Lux Gaudreault, Kelly Simonton, Michael Hemphill, Yu Yu Hsiao

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

In response to changes in student performance and behavior, social and emotional learning (SEL) has received increasing attention and interest in education (Bartlett, 2019). Physical education (PE) has also given increased attention to implementing SEL in physical activity spaces (Richards et al., 2019). Thus, it is important to evaluate teachers’ beliefs about SEL in order to understand their willingness to implement this curriculum effectively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships of several environmental and personal perceptions about teaching on PE teachers’ beliefs for implementing SEL. Physical educators (N = 157; 49.7% male) from the United States …

Relativistic Magnetron With Diffraction Output And Split Cathode, Artem Kuskov Mar 2022

Relativistic Magnetron With Diffraction Output And Split Cathode, Artem Kuskov

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The relativistic magnetron with diffraction output (MDO) is one of the most efficient
microwave sources for sub-100 ns pulses. For pulse widths greater than 100 ns, the microwave production stops due to anode-cathode (A−K) gap closure. In the presence of a solid cathode, the anode and cathode plasmas expand towards each other, shorting the gap. A research team at The Technion Israel Institute of Technology proposed to replace a solid cathode with a split cathode in a magnetron with radial extraction to mitigate gap closure and maximize microwave production from a long pulse generator. Such a cathode geometry comprises an …

Co-Occurrence Of Microplastics, Uranium And Arsenic In Heavy Metal-Contaminated Freshwaters And Their Potential Interaction, Jasmine Anne Quiambao Mar 2022

Co-Occurrence Of Microplastics, Uranium And Arsenic In Heavy Metal-Contaminated Freshwaters And Their Potential Interaction, Jasmine Anne Quiambao

Civil Engineering ETDs

This study identified microplastics and heavy metals in fields sites of freshwater systems in New Mexico and evaluated the interactions of arsenic (As) and uranium (U) with commercial microplastics for acidic and neutral pH in laboratory-controlled conditions. The potential interaction of microplastics with other contaminants is not well-established. Microplastics could interact with heavy metals in ecosystems with naturally elevated background concentrations of metals or affected by anthropogenic activities. Previous studies have found heavy metal contamination in freshwater systems in New Mexico near abandoned mine sites. The objective of this study is (1) to identify and characterize microplastics from metal contaminated …

From Zero-Sum To Economic Partners: Reframing State Tax Policies In Indian Country In The Post-Covid Economy, Pippa Browde Mar 2022

From Zero-Sum To Economic Partners: Reframing State Tax Policies In Indian Country In The Post-Covid Economy, Pippa Browde

New Mexico Law Review

The disparate impact COVID-19 has had on Indian Country reveals problems centuries in the making from the legacy of colonialism. One of those problems is state encroachment in Indian Country, including attempts to assert taxing authority within Indian Country. The issue of the reaches of state taxing authority in Indian Country has resulted in law that is both uncertain and highly complex, chilling both outside investment and economic development for tribes. As the United States emerges from COVID-19, to focus only on the toll exacted on tribes and their peoples ignores the tremendous opportunities for states to right these historical …

Ashamed, Judged, And Unsafe: A Qualitative Study Of Tenant Justice Perceptions To Inform The Redesign Of Housing Court, Daniel W. Bernal Mar 2022

Ashamed, Judged, And Unsafe: A Qualitative Study Of Tenant Justice Perceptions To Inform The Redesign Of Housing Court, Daniel W. Bernal

New Mexico Law Review

Scholars have long suspected that tenants were skeptical of housing court, but prior studies—relying principally on surveys— have not borne that out. This qualitative empirical study draws from in-depth interviews and finds, in contrast to these previous studies, that tenants find the housing court process anything but fair, and describe a startling disconnect between their reasons for court attendance and their experiences of the hearings. Such negative justice perceptions may affect participation in housing court, compliance with judgments, and overall confidence in the judicial process. This Article suggests several legal and policy reforms to better align the housing court experience …

Surviving The Field: Providing The Bare Minimum For Farmworkers In New Mexico, Annie Swift Mar 2022

Surviving The Field: Providing The Bare Minimum For Farmworkers In New Mexico, Annie Swift

New Mexico Law Review

People have cultivated the land now known as New Mexico for millennia. Throughout the last century, however, state law has denied important protections to agricultural workers and thereby contributed to the creation of an agrarian working class that is especially vulnerable to political majorities and powerful interests. For example, the New Mexico legislature explicitly exempted certain farm workers from the Workers’ Compensation Act in 1937, and from the Minimum Wage Act in 1966. Nationally, farm workers have faced exclusion from various labor, health, and safety laws. Consequently, farm workers have enjoyed few legal safeguards against the risk of injury and …

“Reverse” 404(B) Is Not An Evidence Law Issue: A Call To Revive The Compulsory Process Clause As A Vehicle For Evidence Admission, Clay Wilwol Mar 2022

“Reverse” 404(B) Is Not An Evidence Law Issue: A Call To Revive The Compulsory Process Clause As A Vehicle For Evidence Admission, Clay Wilwol

New Mexico Law Review

In criminal cases, Federal Rule of Evidence 404(b) is typically used by prosecutors seeking to introduce non-propensity “crimes, wrongs, or other acts” evidence against defendants. However, sometimes it is the defendant who seeks to use the Rule as a vehicle for evidence admissibility, either to provide such evidence to implicate the guilt of a third party or to help prove the intent or motive of alleged victims in violent crimes involving altercations. This latter defense-proffered use of Rule 404(b) has been termed “reverse” 404(b), and currently there is disagreement among courts (both federal and state) regarding how to assess the …
