More Than The Defiant Few: Lost Womanhood And Necro Women Dismantling Nineteenth-Century Gender Ideologies, Vicki Vanbrocklin Apr 2022

More Than The Defiant Few: Lost Womanhood And Necro Women Dismantling Nineteenth-Century Gender Ideologies, Vicki Vanbrocklin

English Language and Literature ETDs

Too many scholars still rely on adjectives such as deviant, unruly, dangerous, and wild to describe women who interrogate rigid forms of womanhood, especially women of color. My project intervenes in nineteenth-century womanhood discussions, which have traditionally solidified three main categories: Republican, True, and New Womanhood. Between True Womanhood in the mid-nineteenth century and the late nineteenth-century concept of New Womanhood lies an overlooked category aptly understood as Lost Womanhood. I focus on newspaper archives, archival research, and imaginative literature to find “lost” women who critiqued a patriarchal system that thrives on women living in a status akin to being …

Ngss-Based Constructivist Pedagogies: One Secondary Education Teacher’S Approach To Developing Student’S Science Identities, Massa Mafi

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This practitioner action research study explored features of NGSS-based pedagogies to improve secondary education student engagement, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. It examined ways that constructivist pedagogies might encourage students to understand science by putting their skills and knowledge into practice as young engineers. The study involved 51 secondary education students from a large district in the southwest and focused on how NGSS inquiry-based learning can improve scientific understanding and skills within group work, the role that teacher support and modeling can play in learning, and how peer interactions can influence their scientific identities. Qualitative findings from teacher observations, classwork …

Buying Goodwill: Local And Regional Consumer Relationships In Nineteenth Century New Mexico, Erin Nicole Hegberg Apr 2022

Buying Goodwill: Local And Regional Consumer Relationships In Nineteenth Century New Mexico, Erin Nicole Hegberg

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation uses comparative analysis of four nineteenth century Hispanic sites to examine the daily practices by Hispanic residents of acquiring and consuming material goods (1821–1912). Through the practice of consumption, Hispanics created and reinforced social relationships with the groups who bartered or sold them goods. In frontier New Mexico consumer relationships reflected important networks that may have played a role in the creation and maintenance of modern Hispanic identity after U.S. annexation. The nineteenth century was a key moment in the developing racialization of Hispanic identity in New Mexico, which makes it a vital period of study for archaeologists …

Identification Of Neuronal Injury And Survival Mrna Pathways After Spreading Depolarization, Michela Dell'orco, Lu Li, Jordan Weisend, Nora I. Perrone-Bizzozero, Lee Anna Cunningham, Russel Morton, Andrew P. Carlson, William Shuttleworth Apr 2022

Identification Of Neuronal Injury And Survival Mrna Pathways After Spreading Depolarization, Michela Dell'orco, Lu Li, Jordan Weisend, Nora I. Perrone-Bizzozero, Lee Anna Cunningham, Russel Morton, Andrew P. Carlson, William Shuttleworth

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Non-Expert Summary:

This study identified gene expression changes after repeated spreading depolarizations (SD) in healthy and injured brains. A large range of expression changes implicate SD in both deleterious and protective/adaptive changes. SDs are typically assumed to be purely damaging events, and thus increases seen in pathways related to neuronal growth and regeneration were surprising. Further studies of mechanisms underlying possible protective effects of SD could lead to new approaches to improve outcomes following stroke and trauma.

Abstract:

Spreading depolarization (SD) is a slowly propagating wave of profound depolarization that sweeps through cortical tissue. SD is not harmful to healthy …

Towards A More Formal Understanding Of Anyāpoha, David P. Kasza Apr 2022

Towards A More Formal Understanding Of Anyāpoha, David P. Kasza

Philosophy ETDs

The aim of this thesis is to investigate if Digṇāga’s commitment that non-observation (adarśanam) of the reason (adarśanam)and property to be proven (sādya) in the dissimilar example (vyatireka dṛṣṭānta) is alone sufficient to ground the exclusion of other referents (anyāpoha), as a valid inference for oneself (svārthānumāna) and proof for others (parārthānumāna). To answer this question, four formal accounts of Digṇāga’s view of the three characteristics (Trairūpya) of inference by Hayes, Katsura, Tillemans, and Oetke were consulted. I argue a formal logical account of …

Investigation Of Iron Homeostasis In Colon Tumorigenesis, Hyeoncheol Kim Ph.D. Apr 2022

Investigation Of Iron Homeostasis In Colon Tumorigenesis, Hyeoncheol Kim Ph.D.

Iron is essential part of the human metabolism. It is a catalytic co-factor for many proteins, but it generates harmful reactive oxygen species in human body. Also, many irons metabolic genes are changes in human cancer cells compared to normal cells, leading to iron accumulation in cancer cells especially in colorectal cancer.

Due to iron’s significant role in colorectal cancer promotion, much research is focused on its role in colorectal cancer genesis. But some important metabolic aspects are not fully addressed and researched. One key aspect of iron on colorectal cancer cell progression is hemin iron. Much research warned hemin …

Intra-Hour Solar Forecasting Using Cloud Dynamics Features Extracted From Ground-Based Infrared Sky Images, Guillermo Terrén-Serrano Apr 2022

Intra-Hour Solar Forecasting Using Cloud Dynamics Features Extracted From Ground-Based Infrared Sky Images, Guillermo Terrén-Serrano

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Due to the increasing use of photovoltaic systems, power grids are vulnerable to the projection of shadows from moving clouds. An intra-hour solar forecast provides power grids with the capability of automatically controlling the dispatch of energy, reducing the additional cost for a guaranteed, reliable supply of energy (i.e., energy storage). This dissertation introduces a novel sky imager consisting of a long-wave radiometric infrared camera and a visible light camera with a fisheye lens. The imager is mounted on a solar tracker to maintain the Sun in the center of the images throughout the day, reducing the scattering effect produced …

The Impact Of Nurse Leader Rounding On Staff Nurse Perceptions Of The Work Environment, Bobby Bluford, Eric T. Riebsomer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Effective communication and creating healthy work environments are two significant challenges nursing leaders face daily. When communication is poor and work environments are not healthy, nurses leave organizations, which is costly and disruptive to patients and the organization. The global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus COVID19 compounded problems related to poor communication and healthy work environments due to cyclic surges in patient volumes and increased spans of control of nursing leaders . Nursing leaders are challenged to find ways to improve communication with frontline nurses and improve work environments. This project implemented a structured rounding tool for nurse leaders …

Brief For The Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Southern Ute Tribe, The Crow Nation, And Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe As Amici Curiae Supporting Respondent, Paul Spruhan

Faculty Scholarship

The Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the Southern Ute Tribe, the Crow Nation, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe submit this amicus brief in support of Respondent Castro-Huerta.1 The signatory tribes do so to contest the State of Oklahoma’s argument that states have inherent criminal jurisdiction over crimes committed by non-Indians against Indians in Indian Country. Amici curiae are signatories to “Peace Commission” treaties with the United States that affirm tribal sovereignty over their territory to the exclusion of the states, with the federal government assuming the responsibility to arrest and prosecute non-Indian “bad men” who commit offenses …

Stated Culpability Requirements, Scott England

Faculty Scholarship

This Article comprehensively reviews the law of stated culpability requirements in Model Penal Code (MPC) jurisdictions. Part I provides an overview of section 2.02(4), explaining how the provision works and its role in the MPC’s culpability scheme. Part II then identifies section 2.02(4)’s main weaknesses, drawing on both the provision itself and the Code’s commentary. Next, Part III reviews the law in the twenty-five states with culpability provisions influenced by the MPC, identifying specific problems that section 2.02(4) has created in the case law. Finally, Part IV recommends new stated-culpability rules that improve section 2.02(4) and more rigorously enforce the …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

IMPORTANCE: Research into the genetic and genomic ("genomics") foundations of disease is central to our understanding of disease prevention, early detection, diagnostic accuracy, and therapeutic intervention. Inequitable participation in genomics research by historically excluded populations limits the ability to translate genomic knowledge to achieve health equity and ensure that findings are generalizable to diverse populations.

OBSERVATIONS: We propose a novel framework for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in genomics research. Building on principles of community-based participatory research and collective impact frameworks, the framework can guide our understanding of the social, cultural, health system, policy, community, and individual contexts in which …

Creating Lightbulb Moments: Developing Higher-Order Thinking In Family Law Classrooms Through Court Observations, Sonia Gipson Rankin Apr 2022

Creating Lightbulb Moments: Developing Higher-Order Thinking In Family Law Classrooms Through Court Observations, Sonia Gipson Rankin

Faculty Scholarship

This article fills a critical gap in the family law literature by arguing that teaching doctrinal family law in conjunction with the application of established learning theory and pedagogy yields a deeper engagement with the subject matter and leads to more practice-ready lawyers. ABA Standards 301, 303, and 304 do not clearly articulate the distinction between experiential education and experiential learning; doctrinal law classrooms are often bereft of experiential learning activities. By incorporating active learning and inclusive pedagogy in the doctrinal classroom and following recommendations from the MacCrate Report and Family Law Education Reform Project, students will be better prepared …

Against Political Speech, John M. Kang Apr 2022

Against Political Speech, John M. Kang

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court has dedicated itself to the proposition that political speech, more than any other category of speech, is deserving of the highest protection. A succession of cases amply supports this proposition. In Virginia v. Black, the Court announced that "lawful political speech [is] at the core of what the First Amendment is designed to protect." The Court similarly declared in Monitor Patriot Co. v. Roy that the First Amendment "has its fullest and most urgent application" to political speech. In McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission, the Court held that "handing out leaflets in the advocacy of …

Moving Law Schools Forward By Design: Designing Law School Curricula To Transfer Learning From Classroom Theory To Clinical Practice And Beyond, April Land, Aliza Organick

Faculty Scholarship

Calls for reform of legal education are long-standing and have been renewed with vigor and an increasing demand for “practice-ready” lawyers. As part of these reforms, changes to the American Bar Association Standards have been made that now require law schools to provide experiential learning opportunities, to define specific objectives, and to show that students are making progress toward those objectives. A rapidly developing area of study regarding professional identity formation stresses the importance of supporting and guiding students through experiential learning throughout the course of law school. Additionally, as part of its accreditation process, the ABA will now evaluate …

If You Draw It, Students Learn It: An Approach To Teaching Contracts And Other Doctrinal Courses, Paul Figueroa

Faculty Scholarship

Spring 2019 was my first semester as a tenure-stream law professor. That semester I taught Legal Remedies and Contracts II—two subjects that overlap in their coverage of contract damages. I felt very comfortable teaching contracts, given my nearly twenty years of experience on contractual matters in both the private and public sectors. My first few classes went well, which validated my initial confidence. However, my optimism about the semester evaporated when I attempted to teach the parol evidence rule (“PER”).1 It was a Monday, and before starting my Contracts II class I asked the students, “How was the weekend?” followed …
