Characterization Of Materials Properties In Additively Manufactured Aisi-420 Martensitic Steel Deposited By Laser Engineered Net Shaping, Md Mehadi Hassan Nov 2022

Characterization Of Materials Properties In Additively Manufactured Aisi-420 Martensitic Steel Deposited By Laser Engineered Net Shaping, Md Mehadi Hassan

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is a disruptive technology enabling the fabrication of complex and near-net-shaped parts by adding material layer-wise. It offers reduced lead production time. AM processes are finding applications in many industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and mold tooling. Despite the tremendous advantages of AM, some challenges still prevent this technology's adoption in high-standard applications. Anisotropy and inhomogeneity in the mechanical properties of the as-built parts and the existence of pores and lack-of-fusion defects are considered the main issues in directed energy deposition (L-DED) parts. Laser-engineered net shaping LENS® offers excellent possibilities to fabricate metal tools …

Defining The Role Of Core Histones In Cellular Quiescence, Eric M. Small Nov 2022

Defining The Role Of Core Histones In Cellular Quiescence, Eric M. Small

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Quiescence is a distinct cell cycle phase, termed G0, in which growth, transcriptional and translational activity, and replication are halted. Importantly, quiescent cells are viable and can return to the cell cycle. Quiescence is a feature of all organisms and a key hallmark of stem cells; however, the regulation of quiescence is still poorly understood.

Prior studies have implicated chromatin in the regulation of quiescence. In aim 1 I conducted a comprehensive screen of H3 and H4 histone mutants to identify chromatin features that may affect quiescence. I identified several histone residues implicated in transcriptional regulation that altered quiescence and …

El Llano: The Making And Remaking Of A Mexican Homeland On The Southwest-Great Plains Borderlands, Joel Zapata, Latin American And Iberian Institute Nov 2022

El Llano: The Making And Remaking Of A Mexican Homeland On The Southwest-Great Plains Borderlands, Joel Zapata, Latin American And Iberian Institute

LAII Events

The United States’ Mexican population has come to the forefront of public and academic exchanges amidst
the past two presidential campaigns and ensuing political debates regarding immigration policy and border
security. Yet, these discussions consistently neglect Mexicans’ long-term history in what is now the United
States, along with their enduring social influence throughout the nation. A prime example of this neglected
history is the ethnic Mexican past of the Southern Great Plains, a vast transregional grassland larger than
California that stretches from southeastern Colorado and southwestern Kansas, down across eastern New
Mexico and western Oklahoma to central Texas.

High-Precision Estimation Of Emitter Positions Using Bayesian Grouping Of Localizations, Mohamadreza Fazel, Michael J. Wester, David J. Schodt, Sebastian Restrepo Cruz, Sebastian Strauss, Florian Schueder, Thomas Schlichthaerle, Jennifer M. Gillette, Diane S. Lidke, Bernd Rieger, Ralf Jungmann, Keith A. Lidke

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Single-molecule localization microscopy super-resolution methods rely on stochastic blinking/binding events, which often occur multiple times from each emitter over the course of data acquisition. Typically, the blinking/binding events from each emitter are treated as independent events, without an attempt to assign them to a particular emitter. Here, we describe a Bayesian method of inferring the positions of the tagged molecules by exploring the possible grouping and combination of localizations from multiple blinking/binding events. The results are position estimates of the tagged molecules that have improved localization precision and facilitate nanoscale structural insights. The Bayesian framework uses the localization precisions to …

Social Presence As A Predictor Of Social Construction Of Knowledge In Discussion Forums In Asynchronous Online Higher Education Courses, Austin Megli Nov 2022

Social Presence As A Predictor Of Social Construction Of Knowledge In Discussion Forums In Asynchronous Online Higher Education Courses, Austin Megli

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The three research papers completed and compiled to make up this dissertation explore the relationship between social presence and social construction of knowledge in asynchronous online discussion forums in higher education courses in the instructional technology field. Paper 1 is a literature review of the interaction analysis model (IAM) (Gunawardena et al., 1997) as a methodology, which is used to measure and determine the social construction of knowledge in online discussion forums. This literature review identified and highlighted the need to determine how the social environment of online learning influences the social construction of knowledge. This led to the second …

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Earth’S Mantle Transition Zone Minerals And High Pressure-Temperature Phase Equilibrium Experiments On Martian Basalts, Wenyi Zhou Nov 2022

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Earth’S Mantle Transition Zone Minerals And High Pressure-Temperature Phase Equilibrium Experiments On Martian Basalts, Wenyi Zhou

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Wadsleyite and ringwoodite are major minerals in the Earth’s Mantle Transition Zone. Global and local seismic studies have detected strong lateral variations in seismic velocity and anisotropy in the Mantle Transition Zone, reflecting temperature and possible composition variations. Interpretation of these seismic observations requires knowledge of thermoelastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite with different compositions (water and Fe contents) under high pressure-temperature conditions. In this dissertation, we have measured single-crystal elastic properties of wadsleyite and ringwoodite under high pressure-temperature conditions by Brillouin spectroscopy. Based on our measurements and previous experimental results, we further model the effects of water and Fe …

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang Nov 2022

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Gas-surface scattering involves the conversion of energy in different forms in the impinging molecule, possible bond breaking and forming, and the energy transfer across gas-solid interface. Possible energy dissipation channels include adiabatic energy transfer to the motion of surface phonons and non-adiabatic interactions with surface electron-hole pairs. A complete understanding of the interplay of energy dissipation and physical/chemical changes in the molecule is vital for many important applications such as materials fabrication and heterogenous catalysis.

Gas-surface encounters may occur where non-adiabatic effects are negligible. Two such systems were investigated, both with ample experimental data. One is concerned with the scattering …

Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen Nov 2022

Reclaiming Justice From Below: Victim Participation And Reparations In Post-Conflict Peru, Fiorella P. Vera-Adrianzen

Political Science ETDs

Since 2007, Peru’s Plan Integral de Reparaciones (PIR, Comprehensive Reparations Plan) has provided material, symbolic, individual, and collective reparations to victims of the civil conflict (1980-2000). Important differences in the implementation of reparations have emerged across time and space. Previous studies have examined factors conditioning the adoption and the effects of reparative justice, generally at the national level. How reparative processes unfold on the ground from design to implementation remains underexplored. Drawing upon original interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and archival research in three highly affected Andean regions (Apurímac, Junín, and Ayacucho) and in the capital city, Lima, I examine …

Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler Nov 2022

Convexity Of Regularized Optimal Transport Dissimilarity Measures For Signed Signals, Christian P. Fowler

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Debiased Sinkhorn divergence (DS divergence) is a distance function of

regularized optimal transport that measures the dissimilarity between two

probability measures of optimal transport. This thesis analyzes the advantages of

using DS divergence when compared to the more computationally expensive

Wasserstein distance as well as the classical Euclidean norm. Specifically, theory

and numerical experiments are used to show that Debiased Sinkhorn divergence

has geometrically desirable properties such as maintained convexity after data

normalization. Data normalization is often needed to calculate Sinkhorn

divergence as well as Wasserstein distance, as these formulas only accept

probability distributions as inputs and do not directly …
