Singing “Aca’Pala” And Doing Anthroplocura: A Testimonio Of A Músicx Y Puet@, Dabi García

LAII Events

¡Agua es vida! Water is life is a saying in the arid mountain deserts of NM. In this region the musical arts and theater have been an important source of inspiration within the growing land based acequia movement. Dabi García will give a testimonio of their involvement in this movement conceptually using the concepts of “dando segunda” and “singing out of tune,” as local ways of building knowledge.

A Moving Target Architecture As A Side-Channel Countermeasure, Rachel M. Cazzola Nov 2023

A Moving Target Architecture As A Side-Channel Countermeasure, Rachel M. Cazzola

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

We investigate a novel side-channel attack countermeasure called Side-channel Power analysis Resistance for Encryption Algorithms using Dynamic partial reconfiguration (SPREAD). The countermeasure leverages a strategy that is best characterized as a moving target architecture. Modern field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architectures provide support for dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR), a feature that allows real-time reconfiguration of portions of the programmable logic (PL) while the FPGA continues to carry out computing tasks. Using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the proposed moving target architecture leverages DPR to change the implementation characteristics of the substitution boxes (SBOX) in real time. We present experimental hardware results …

Conceptual Meaning In Phonology: Multimodal Iconic Expressions In Discourse Focus, David Páez Acevedo Nov 2023

Conceptual Meaning In Phonology: Multimodal Iconic Expressions In Discourse Focus, David Páez Acevedo

Linguistics ETDs

In everyday communication, speakers go beyond words to synchronize speech sounds and gestures, adding nuanced meanings. For instance, in Colombian Spanish, recounting the distant past involves elongating words, modulating pitch, and using expressive hand movements. This dissertation explores this phenomenon, termed Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs), using Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Grammar. The quantitative study uncovers correlations between verb aspect, nominal quantification, and speech duration, revealing phono-iconic connections. The qualitative study examines construal operations giving rise to MMIEs across semantic domains. MMIEs predominantly appear in discourse Focus, with durative events and mass-like quantities exhibiting pronounced phono-iconic associations. Patterns include stress and …

Study Of Si-Gan Photoconductive Switches Operating Modes Using Near-Ir Radiation, Nicolas Eduardo Gonzalez Padilla Nov 2023

Study Of Si-Gan Photoconductive Switches Operating Modes Using Near-Ir Radiation, Nicolas Eduardo Gonzalez Padilla

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

One of the most promising solid-state devices for fast switching and radio frequency generation applications is the photoconductive switch (PCSS). These devices have been thoroughly explored since the late 1980s and exhibit remarkable switching properties in gallium arsenide (GaAs). With recent advances in wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor manufacturing processes, there has been an increasing interest in using WBG semiconductors to implement PCSS. WBG semiconductors could exhibit the same switching characteristics as GaAs while overcoming their poor power management and short lifetime under pulsed power conditions, making PCSS a reliable option in high-power applications. Gallium Nitride (GaN) has emerged as one …

Phenological Activities Of Desert Bees Track Rainfall More Than Temperature And Predict Temporal Abundance Trends Over 16 Years, Jade Elijah Mclaughlin Nov 2023

Phenological Activities Of Desert Bees Track Rainfall More Than Temperature And Predict Temporal Abundance Trends Over 16 Years, Jade Elijah Mclaughlin

Biology ETDs

Phenology, the timing of recurrent biological events, is a key mechanism by which species adapt or acclimatize to variable environmental conditions, including those influenced by climate change. Measurable traits, including the onset and end of activity, peak activity, and duration, characterize the phenology of life events, and could be significant predictors of trends in population abundance or stability in a changing climate. Bees provide critical pollination services, and understanding the covariates of bee phenological traits can refine predictions on the vulnerabilities of bees and their services to climate change. We paired 16 years of monthly bee survey data (2002-2019) with …

Quantifying Co2 And Heat Fluxes At Roosevelt Hot Springs, Hydrothermal Area, Samantha R. Wolf Nov 2023

Quantifying Co2 And Heat Fluxes At Roosevelt Hot Springs, Hydrothermal Area, Samantha R. Wolf

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Roosevelt Hot Springs is an actively producing hydrothermal system that has been extensively studied by field, geophysical and geochemical techniques since the 1970’s. Roosevelt Hot Springs sits at the western base of the Mineral Mountains in Utah, an area that has formed because of many volcanic, thermal and structural events since the late Oligocene. The work in this manuscript is the first of its kind to incorporate measurements of spring-based CO2 fluxes with diffuse measurements to quantify the total CO2 Flux in tons per day of a Basin and Range and Colorado Plateau Transition Zone-hosted hydrothermal system. Using …

Application Of An Empirical Density Law Via Python For Aqueous Plutonium Chloride Systems For Mcnp6, Riley Bulso Nov 2023

Application Of An Empirical Density Law Via Python For Aqueous Plutonium Chloride Systems For Mcnp6, Riley Bulso

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

A predictive density law has been implemented and developed into a Python tool to reduce bias and the high degree of conservatism in criticality safety calculations for aqueous plutonium chloride systems. Based upon available data and parameters, an empirical method was used to create this law. This method was used in the development of a Python tool to predict the density and composition of such a solution, which may then populate material data in an MCNP6 input file.

This tool and the density law equation have been verified against experimental data points for accuracy. Density is predicted with a maximum …

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read Nov 2023

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Within this research, I have developed a microneedle-based wearable sensor for plants and fungi, to measure the electrical impedance of different tissues. Electrical impedance measures the physical properties of a material while allowing complex biological systems to be modeled onto a simplified electrical circuit. Microneedles allow for electrical impedance to measure specific tissues without the insulative properties of the cuticle and can be applied to delicate tissues. I have demonstrated the tissue specificity, novel attachment methods, as well as use on both plants and fungi. In chapter 1, I applied microneedle-based impedance to the leaf midrib of a sorghum and …

Carrier Dynamics In Green Iii-Nitride Leds Using Small-Signal Electroluminescence, Xuefeng Li Nov 2023

Carrier Dynamics In Green Iii-Nitride Leds Using Small-Signal Electroluminescence, Xuefeng Li

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Solid-state lighting has achieved significant success over the past two decades, but the low quantum efficiency of green LEDs (i.e., the “green gap”) remains a barrier to full red-green-blue (RGB) displays in numerous applications. Combating efficiency reduction in longer-wavelength LEDs requires understanding the relative roles of intrinsic effects (e.g., wave-function overlap, carrier-current density relationship, phase-space filling (PSF)) vs. extrinsic effects (e.g., material degradation due to increased defect density, compositional inhomogeneities, etc.). A systematic study of the carrier dynamics in InGaN/GaN LEDs is very important for understanding the origin of the green gap and for providing solutions to improve the efficiency …
