Background: Learning Communities (LC) are an established mechanism for student advisement and support in medical schools in the United States. A recent survey* of LC programs in 27 US medical schools identified intentionally connecting students across class years as a feature of many LCs. The UNM School of Medicine LC program, launched in 2015, has seen the benefits of providing vertical mentoring and has increasingly scheduled activities where students interact with learners from other classes at key points throughout the curriculum. However, as the challenges students face change between didactic and clinical learning, it is important to understand the best …

Faculty can also request that the Library purchase apps that might be useful for …
Designing Curriculum With The Affective Context Learning Theory: Using Stories To Explore Fact And Feeling In Geriatric Psychiatry, Wayles Haynes, Jeremy Miller, Christopher Abbott
Designing Curriculum With The Affective Context Learning Theory: Using Stories To Explore Fact And Feeling In Geriatric Psychiatry, Wayles Haynes, Jeremy Miller, Christopher Abbott
HSC Education Days
Geriatric psychiatry requires physicians to treat psychiatrically, medically, and ethically complex patients while navigating limited resources, ageism, and complex emotions. The number of geriatric psychiatry fellows is declining while the target patient demographic grows. One proposal to address the mismatch is to provide residents with earlier, quality exposure to geriatric psychiatry. To shift perspectives and spark interest, curriculum was created using the affective context theory of learning and push pull learning design model targeting both cognitive and affective learning. This model addresses learner specific concerns, provides resources for motivated learners, and employs storytelling to create emotionally impactful experiences. The eight-class …

Health sciences students experience mental health issues, demoralization, and burnout at greater rates compared to other students and often do not report these issues for fear of marginalization. Additionally, many neurodiverse students struggle in higher education due to environments that are not accessible. Considering these information points, authors surveyed space in the library to determine an appropriate area to create and pilot the Wellness Room. Funding was established through an internal grant and a study room was approved for use in the pilot. Resources were provided with autonomous space, feminist ethics of care, and trauma informed care tenets.

What's Right With You? Using Strength-Based Approaches To Empower Patients, Communities, And Learners, Luke Sanchez, Derek Lin, Anthony Fleg
HSC Education Days
A deficits model is the cornerstone for the health professions education, practice and scholarship. With a focus on diseases, deficits, addictions, social risk factors, this approach has a risk of disempowering patients, communities, and learners. A strength-based approach instead focuses on what people and communities do well – resources, skills, strengths, resilience, etc. – with intention of building upon these to improve health. Strength-based approaches are critical for decolonization and for undoing racism. This session, led by HSC students, presents a mixture of data and personal experience to elucidate the importance of strength-based approaches to health, with guidance on how …

BACKGROUND:
The social mission of health professional schools is generally to ensure a diverse cadre of providers is trained to care for populations, with particular attention paid to the delivery of primary care in underserved areas. Students who attend community college (CC) before matriculating to a health professional program typically bring diversity and concordance with local population demographics. However, CC students face more challenges than traditional students in obtaining proper resources and support to prepare for graduate programs, including mentorship. This study aimed to identify challenges faced by CC students, such as financial status, cultural backgrounds, and fear of medical …

Introduction: The innovative restructuring of the UNM College of Nursing Undergraduate clinical placements across various specialties is a good reflection of our colleges' commitment to meeting the needs of our students. Based on cohorts' performance on standardized exams administered through the Health Education Systems Inc (HESI), clinical courses were changed to allow every student to take a didactic course and clinical hours in the specialty areas previously limited to a select number of students.
Methods: The cohort data revealed lower performances on HESI exams within the specialty areas of behavioral health, pediatrics, community, and maternity. The traditional upper-level clinical courses …

Now more than ever, medical schools must strengthen the tools they provide for historically underrepresented students to foster a diverse physician workforce. Near-peer mentorship is a powerful tool that promotes resilience, reduces stress, increases academic accountability, and eases the transition into medical school, with students historically underrepresented in medicine benefiting most. We created a near-peer mentorship program matching matriculating first-year Combined Baccalaureate/Medical Degree (BA/MD) program students with rising second- and third-year BA/MD medical students. We surveyed students about their interests, goals, and backgrounds to create matches, and held a mentorship training outlining expectations for discussing sensitive topics, accountability, and relationship …
The Effectiveness Of Various Online Continuing Education Formats For Improving Knowledge Of Clinical Documentation, Sara L. Nottingham
The Effectiveness Of Various Online Continuing Education Formats For Improving Knowledge Of Clinical Documentation, Sara L. Nottingham
HSC Education Days
Context: Clinical documentation is a professional responsibility of healthcare providers, including athletic trainers (ATs). Previous research has identified that ATs desire continuing education (CE) opportunities specific to documentation. We investigated the effectiveness of different online CE formats to improve ATs’ knowledge of clinical documentation.
Methods: We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods randomized controlled trial design. After recruiting 18,981 practicing ATs, interested participants were randomly enrolled into a group: online personalized learning platform that included videos, presentations, case studies, documents, and knowledge checks (PLP, n=39), passive online reading list (PAS, n=44), or control without resources (CON, n=77)]. Baseline and follow-up knowledge …

Lessons Learned From The Design And Implementation Of A Learner And Location Focused Deij Curriculum For A Psychiatry Residency Program, Wayles Haynes, Samira Khalil, Lindsay Smart
HSC Education Days
The 2022 ACGME survey found that learners perceived a residency-wide lack of DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice) education reflecting the program’s historic de-prioritization for DEIJ education. This gap in conjunction with increasing concern about the effects of DEIJ issues on clinical care and the learning environment inspired a new curriculum. An interprofessional and inter-hierarchical team created a learner and location focused resident DEIJ curriculum. A year-long investigation of learner specific needs was conducted through a series of zoom meetings discussing content, organization, and teaching methods. Learners reviewed asynchronous material (podcasts, videos, and articles) then provided feedback through in-class discussion …

Teaching What Matters: Addressing Social Determinants Of Health In Clinical Practice, N Marian Salas, Suman Pal
HSC Education Days
Social determinants of health (SD0H) account for 50-80% of healthcare outcomes. Despite this, many residents receive minimal training in how to address the negative social determinants of health in their patient populations. We developed a 1.5-hour workshop integrated into GME orientation for all the 167 incoming interns of our institution. We used case-based learning as a proven effective method for both improving knowledge gain and skills acquisition outcomes. Using the input of multiple subject matter experts, we developed four cases from different regions of the state that learners worked through in facilitated small groups supported by intermittent check-ins with the …

Internal Medicine Resident Outcomes After Initiation Of Block Scheduling, Annashia Shera, Michael Louie, Raymond G. Murphy
HSC Education Days
The height of the COVID pandemic took a considerable toll on all healthcare workers and heavily on resident physicians. The long work hours and subsequent effect on mental health required a change to the system not only for wellness but also education. This especially affected the quality of the resident outpatient experience due to the competing high demands of inpatient service. Feedback from residents propelled the decision to implement block scheduling at the University of New Mexico Internal Medicine Residency program in 2021. In this presentation, we share the outcomes of this change in terms of duty hours, wellness, and …

Comparison Of Vipassana Meditation With Other Mindfulness Traditions In The Response To Experimentally Induced Pain, Timothy Ian Vandiver
Comparison Of Vipassana Meditation With Other Mindfulness Traditions In The Response To Experimentally Induced Pain, Timothy Ian Vandiver
Psychology ETDs
This study compared various mindfulness meditators with a meditation-naïve control group on various measures of pain tolerance and response. My primary hypothesis was that meditators would show greater pain tolerance than non-meditators and that they would also show greater parasympathetic nervous system activation in response to experimentally induced pain. The results were mixed, with meditators showing no greater increase in pain tolerance post-baseline. Differences in nervous system function between the two groups were also difficult to interpret.
Another component of the study was to explore the phenomenological reports and to compare and contrast those of the meditators and non-meditators using …

The Juan De La Cruz Molino: Folk Architecture At El Güique-Estaca New Mexico, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Faculty Publications
El Güique and Estaca are twin communities just north of the confluence of the Río Grande and the Río Chama. Like other Spanish colonial settlements in the historic Río Arriba, acequia-based agriculture was essential for food production in this high desert region of the northern Río Grande. Along with the construction of acequias, molinos (grist mills) were built to grind wheat into flour as part of the subsistence farming economy of the times. While acequias were communal, molinos most often were constructed and operated as private enterprises by local millers like the case of Juan de la Cruz Borrego and …

The Phenomenology Of Abstract Awe: A Qualitative Study Of Lived Experiences In Psychedelic Virtual Reality, Jacob Spinks
The Phenomenology Of Abstract Awe: A Qualitative Study Of Lived Experiences In Psychedelic Virtual Reality, Jacob Spinks
Psychology ETDs
This thesis investigates individuals' experiences with SoundSelf, a virtual reality (VR) program inspired by psychedelic experience, focusing on its capacity to evoke awe and other self-transcendent experiences. Conducted with fifteen participants, the study involved a single VR session followed by in-depth phenomenological interviews. Through a thematic analysis, three primary themes were constructed: (a) emotions and feelings, the good and the bad; (b) non-reflective engagements, directly living experience; and (c) reflective engagements, exploring curiosity and wonder. The findings indicate that while SoundSelf can elicit a wide array of emotions and self-transcendent experiences, it does not consistently induce awe. This research contributes …
