Mexico is estimated to have 9.8 billion barrels of untapped oil reserves, or about 10 percent of the world’s crude oil; however, much remains undeveloped and production is declining as a result of dysfunction in the structure of Mexico’s petroleum regime. Until recently, Mexico’s Constitution and laws limited oil and gas activities to those of its state oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), which struggled to invest in new drilling and technology. In 2013, however, Mexico reopened its petroleum sector to foreign investment. Although 75 years in the making, Mexico is taking a bold new path toward developing its petroleum resources. …

Development Of Oligo(P-Phenylene Ehynylene)(Ope) Applications Against Chemical And Biological Threats, Suhyun Yoon

Four new applications of oligo-phenylene ethynylene (OPE) and poly-PE (PPE) compounds for detection and destruction of biological and chemical threats have been investigated. Mixed surfaces composed of PPEs and a thermoswitchable polymer were created, and were shown to be able to capture, kill, and reversibly release pathogenic bacteria. In order to develop fluorescent sensors for CW agents, the spectral changes of OPEs with surfactants and malathion (a simulant for nerve agents) were measured. Formation of OPE-dimers in the presence of surfactants can cause fluorescence enhancement (turn-on) or quenching (turn-off). Among six positive and negative OPEs, only OPEs with ethyl ester …

DNA sequencing is a fundamental tool for biological science, aimed primarily at uncovering the genetic contributions to diseases. The first Human DNA sequence, which employed conventional fluorescent-based Sanger Sequencing method, took many years to complete at a cost of over three billion dollars. In one survey, it shows that Human Genome Project (HGP) had generated more than $67 billion in U.S. economic output, $20 billion in personal income for Americans and 310 thousand jobs in USA, only during year 2010. Paraguay presents a unique case of societal bilingualism in Latin America. Almost 90% of its population speaks the indigenous language Guarani, and half of the population is bilingual in Spanish and Guarani. However, contemporary Guarani has been described as an unpredictable, ad-hoc mix of Guarani and Spanish. This idea is also reflected in the local term jopara 'mixture', which is used to refer to the variety by its speakers. A particularly salient contact feature are loan verbs, i.e. Spanish-origin roots used with Guarani morphology. The Gallina area is an ideal location for an investigation into social violence using GIS-based methods. Situated in northern New Mexico, the remote Gallina region and the Gallina phase (A.D. 1100\u20131300) in particular have a clear record of violence that peaked in the latter half of the 13th Century (Borck and Bremer 2015; Constan 2011). Although there is an abundant record of violence, the source of the violence remains unclear. Were the Gallina attacked by an outside group or groups? Did the Gallina turn on each other? Direct physical evidence and rock art, including head skin trophies, indicate that violence linked to warfare was prevalent among the preceramic farmers of the North American Southwest known as Basketmakers. The degree of intergroup conflict indicates that Basketmakers may have needed defense against atlatl darts. In the early 1900s archaeologists suggested that distinctive wooden artifacts served this purpose. Despite resembling Puebloan rabbit sticks, the first to report these S-shaped and flattened sticks with longitudinal facial grooves thought that hunting was not their purpose. Yet the sticks appear singularly inadequate for the task of atlatl dart defense. I evaluate the suggested …

This thesis argues that the American West is a melting pot unprecedented by anything else in the North American continent. The natural beauty observed by the nineteenth-century photographers still prevails. The land is shaped not only by new peoples and cultures, and by those already inhabiting the land, but also by political ideas about how the land should be used. The works of Robert Adams and Mark Klett examine these agendas through their respective works. They illustrate ideas of how the land should be used--from national parks, to cities, to energy and environmental projects. Both photographers focus on different areas …

Achieving computer security requires both rigorous empirical measurement and models to understand cybersecurity phenomena and the effectiveness of defenses and interventions. To address the growing scale of cyber-insecurity, my approach to protecting users employs principled and rigorous measurements and models. In this dissertation, I examine four cybersecurity phenomena. I show that data-driven and abstract modeling can reveal surprising conclusions about longterm, persistent problems, like spam and malware, and growing threats like data-breaches and cyber conflict. In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above. This descriptive, ethnographic study explored the influence of cultural health beliefs and social capital on the adoption of community-based health care interventions by rural villages in Papua New Guinea. The development of local level resources that lead to improved health indices requires an awareness of both the cultural context and the relational components of social capital that link people within the community. Social capital has been defined as resources that are an inherent part of a social group and the elements of social organization such as trust, networks, and norms of reciprocity that facilitate mutual cooperation (Billings, 2000; Carpiano, 2006). …

Under what conditions will rivals choose to accept mutual constraints, limitations, and even reductions on their capabilities for waging war? Contemporary political science lacks a strong theoretical basis for understanding this behavior, despite the fact that states in the modern era continue to negotiate and enter into arms control arrangements. This study contributes a theoretical framework and empirical analysis identifying the conditions under which nuclear-armed rivals might choose to curb their deadly arsenals. In early 1943, the U.S. governments Manhattan Project built a secret laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, for a single military purpose—to develop the world's first atomic weapons. Today, the remaining places and spaces of the bomb at Los Alamos are being preserved for future generations through their inclusion in the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, a unique partnership between the Department of Energy, which will continue to own and manage its wartime properties located 'behind the fence,' and the Department of Interior's National Park Service, which will take the lead on interpreting the complex history and continuing legacy of …

In the project of nationalism in Mexico, the governing bodies acted out a deliberate process of reclamation of the histories and mythologies of Mexico for the purpose of state programming, and for the development of an official narrative of nationality. In my thesis, I trace the effects of nationalism by first looking into a history of power in Mexico as articulated through the adaptive reuse, over centuries, of the Castillo de Chapultepec building. Email as a communication phenomenon has been in existence since the 1970s, and yet researchers are still discovering new information regarding the usage and implications of usage for this medium (Atherton, Sawmynaden, Sheikh, Majeed, & Car, 2012; Zhu and White, 2009). Enron, a very large organization that peaked in the 1990s, utilized email for a variety of different purposes. This study examined the validity and reliability of the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS; Hallinger, 1985) for use among teachers in a rural school district. The problem addressed by this study was the need for a well-substantiated tool, which demonstrated reliable and valid assessments of principal leadership skills among elementary and secondary teachers. Measuring principal leadership behaviors is valuable and necessary for the on-going study of the phenomenon of effective school leadership. This was a study involving one rural, northern New Mexico school district, with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students and a teacher population of 214. The survey …

Research into the pre-Islamic Arabs has posited an autochthonous, maritime tradition in Southern Arabia which provided the foundation for effective use of sea power within the early Islamic state. Using historical and archaeological evidence, the existence of such a tradition is reexamined within the broader cultural and historical context of the area, with focus divided into three periods; that immediately prior to the birth of Muhammad, that before the rise of Ptolemaic Egypt and that of the Mesopotamian City-States, when southern Arabia was peripheral to the earliest organized civilizations. Conflict, Tension, Strength,' explores the longevity of three separate Catholic Indian missions in the West: St. Paul's Mission in Hays, Montana; St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana; and St. Stephens Indian School in St. Stephens, Wyoming. These mission schools, in part, possess two common traits: they have all reached the 125-year milestone and they are all located on or adjacent to reservations that serve two distinct Indian tribes. St. Paul's Mission is on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. St. Labre Indian School serves students from the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations. …

This thesis examines how language deforms the image of the 'pagan and barbarous' inhabitants of the African continent, and specifically that of Queen Njinga of Matamba, through the process of 'Othering,' realized by the racist imperialist ideology embedded in European writings. I argue that the representation of Africans and African subjects in Fra. Cavazzi da Montecúccolo's writings deform their image. Cavazzi's writings draw from a stockpile of images that circulated in European ideology to represent the 'Other' and make inferior all non-Europeans and non-Catholics in order to justify the slave trade and colonization. In the contemporary United States apocalypse, dystopia, and catastrophe are commonplace. Indeed, both the increasing presence of fictional apocalypse in art and popular culture and the tone of apocalypticism in U.S. political, environmental, and social rhetorics, have been noted by writers and thinkers from a wide range of fields. Scholars of neoliberalism in particular have traced this popularity to the economic and political realities of late-capitalism and the ideological contradictions embedded in the evolution of capitalism to its current, immersive iteration. Sugarcane workers in northwestern Nicaragua are suffering from chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnt) at extremely high rates. In the small town of Chichigalpa alone, CKDnt causes 46% of male deaths (Kurzrok et al. 2013). This paper examines the CKD epidemic as a fundamentally structural problem, not merely a biological abnormality, because it is closely linked to labor exploitation, poverty, human rights violations, and historical context. Grounded in literature from medical anthropology and medical sociology and based on two months of ethnographic field research in northwestern Nicaragua, it analyzes how knowledge production interacts with scientific uncertainty about CKDs specific …

In my thesis, I explore the generic allusion of two ekphrases in the textile competition between Minerva and Arachne. While various scholars have approached the story of Arachne based on Ovids critique of the Augustan regime, I focus more on the poetic representation of the two ekphrases in the context of their intertextual relationship with other Greek and Roman literary traditions. Minerva's tapestry is the embodiment of the heroic epic tradition similar to Homeric and Vergilian narrative, and Arachne's tapestry represents the archetype of the Hellenistic poetic tradition.
