In this essay, I review my development as a playwright in the MFA Dramatic Writing program and examine the shifting, overlapping goals of playwright-as-educator and playwright-as-entertainer. In Part One, I position my academic exploration of trauma in relation to ethics in journalism, embodied knowledge, and intersectional feminism and outline my creative experiments in staging trauma through the process of witnessing, retelling, and abstraction. Abstract

A high-power L-band microwave source has been developed using a metamaterial (MTM) to produce a biperiodic double negative slow wave structure (SWS) for interaction with an electron beam. The beam is generated by a ~700 kV, ~6 kA short pulse (~ 10 ns) electron beam accelerator. The design of the metamaterial SWS (MSWS) consists of a cylindrical waveguide, loaded with alternating …

The Heart Of K'É: Transforming Diné Special Education And Unsettling The Colonial Logics Of Disability, Sandra Yellowhorse

This paper takes up the roles of ideology and spatiality as they impact Diné students and learners in understanding conceptions of normativity, neuro-diversity and bodily variance. I am concerned with how the movement and creation of Indigenous schools and their praxis still maintain and often times produce settler colonial ideologies of being, personhood, difference and ability. I illustrate the challenges that Diné planners and educators face in entrenching cultural knowledge and language into their educational initiatives, while some of the problematic manifestations and expressions of normativity present themselves through state polices, federal law and mainstream curriculum.

The conceptual framework of Indigenous placemaking is defined as a fundamental and complex approach to the processes of the Indigenous planning paradigm. To identify placemaking is to acknowledge and recognize Indigenous place-based knowledge as essential planning tools when working with Indigenous communities. Colonization and western acculturization adjudicated the divestment of Indigenous languages and cultures through western policies and Indian school education. Today, Indigenous worldviews are tainted with extreme levels of sociocultural disparities. The implementation of Indigenous planning processes establishes an understanding to Indigenous community-building through shared knowledge and collaboration. With a central theme of emancipatory education, Seeds of Freedom: Liberating Education in Guatemala by Clark Taylor (2014) delivers a powerful historical narrative that reaffirms the value of an education for liberation. The remarkable story of Santa Maria Tzejá, a remote village in northern Guatemala, demonstrates how social activism and a liberating education contributed to the socio-economic development and empowerment of this indigenous community. Through extensive interviews with students, families, community leaders, and teachers, Taylor describes a story that has been unfolding for over twenty-five years.

Embodying The West: A Literary And Cultural History Of Environment, Body, And Belief, Julie E. Williams

My dissertation challenges the dominant narrative identity about Western embodiment and opens the field of Western literary studies as it explores what the West looks like to women writers for whom it is not a space of regeneration through violence. I argue that women’s writing reconceptualizes Western literature, creating a counter-narrative about American identity by shaping a space for and a discourse about the embodied experiences that have been marginalized, silenced, and ignored. Through examining discourses of health and embodiment in women’s writing about the American West from the 1880s to the present day, my study brings together a diverse …

This dissertation analyzes the text and context of a mid-twelfth-century Hebrew narrative composed by a Northern European Jew writing pseudonymously as Solomon bar Samson. The so-called Chronicle of Solomon bar Samson treats the perceived reasons for and Jewish responses to the Rhineland pogroms of 1096 C.E., which were carried out by burghers, peasants, and crusaders traveling to the Holy Land. The reasons expressed range from divine retribution for Jewish transgression to Christian vengeance for Christ’s crucifixion while responses range from voluntary conversion aimed at preserving life to suicidal and homicidal martyrdom enacted in the hopes of securing atonement and redemption. …

Having become almost cliché in academic discourses, the term gentrification offers a conceptualization of sociospatial transformation too narrow for contemporary understandings of inequality within the post-industrial city. Generalizations of a wealthy populous displacing working-class and marginalized populations fail to address the diversity, complexity, and scope of economic hollowing-out and fail to fully account for other incoming subpopulations such as the emergent “creative class,” comprised of university-educated individuals who are not necessarily considered affluent by traditional economic measures. This thesis is a comparative analysis of Emperor Charles V and Sultan Süleyman I. Both men were archetypes of their age and perfectly demonstrated the perceived struggle between the East and West, Christianity and Islam. These two were the first generation of sovereigns of the early modern period, and throughout their time as monarchs each sought to counteract and dominate the other by utilizing rhetoric, titulature, propaganda, regalia, and iconography.

The article analyzes the constitutional basis of command responsibility as well as how this responsibility has been shaped by the Judicial Branch and Congress. It also briefly discusses the application of international law and human rights norms in the context of two models of future operations and the corresponding potential for command liability, beginning with the Commander in Chief. This article focuses on two principle areas of consideration. The first involves the use of non-military personnel who assist or take part in quasi-military roles. This narrative study documents the experiences of seven Latina community educators through focus groups, interviews, and artifact data. Given the stigma of mental health (Bayer, 2005), a lack of culturally centered emotional curriculums (Boler, 1997; Boler & Zembylas, 2003) which are removed from structural oppression (Collins, 2002,1989; Crenshaw, 1991, 1993; hooks, 2014), educators, parents, and communities are in need of mental health promotion tools. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2015), approximately 70 million Americans annually are diagnosed with mental health issues that disable daily functioning. Negotiating Identity, Home, And Belonging: Understanding The Experiences Of African Women Refugees Resettled In The United States, Consolata Nthemba Mutua

The purpose of this study is to examine how former African women refugees negotiate their identity, sense of belonging, and home in the context of transnational displacement. To explore this topic, I conducted in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group interviews with African women who came to the United States as refugees and who now live in two cities in the Southwestern and Midwestern United States. The resulting data was analyzed using both thematic and narrative analysis.

Simulation And Analysis Of The Band-Agile Coaxial Backward-Wave Oscillator, Phillip H. Fansler

Simulation of a Band-Agile Coaxial Backward-Wave Oscillator (BACoRBWO) pro- duced a device that is tunable to operate in two distinct bands: L-band (1.4GHz) at 1.9GW with an efficiency of 26%, and C-band (4.2GHz) at 1.1GW with an efficiency of 15%. The device does not perform as expected based on existing literature; how- ever the end result is not necessarily undesirable. The need for further exploration of the discrepancies between contemporary literature and our findings notwithstanding, this device operates well enough of its own accord to merit additional study.

Search In T Cell And Robot Swarms: Balancing Extent And Intensity, George M. Fricke

This work investigates effective search and resource collection algorithms for swarms. Deterministic spiral algorithms and L ́evy search processes have been shown to be optimal for single searchers. We extend these strategies to swarms of robots and populations of T cells and measure performance under a variety of conditions.

Search extent and intensity lie on a continuum: more intensive patterns search thoroughly in the local area, while extensive patterns cover more area but may miss targets nearby. We show that the most efficient trade-off between search intensity and extent for swarms depends strongly on the distribution of targets, swarm size …

Roadway pavement surface distress information is essential for effective pavement asset management, and subsequently, transportation agencies at all levels dedicate a large amount of time and money to routinely collect data on pavement surface distress conditions as the core of their asset management programs. These data are used by these agencies to make maintenance and repair decisions. Current methods for pavement surface distress evaluation are time-consuming and expensive. The assumption that civil war era France divided neatly into two ideological parties is common within the historical scholarly literature. There were, more accurately, three ideological groups in France by the outbreak of the Civil Wars in 1562. Firstly was the reactionary party, made up of entrenched forces of the Crown that had adopted much of the outward symbols of the Renaissance/Humanist movement but at root remained essentially regressive. The Moderate Party, secondly, made up mostly of Catholic Humanists and Renaissance scholars who adopted much of the essence of reform, but stopped short of calling for systematic societal change through …
