Exploring The Role Of Cyclin D1 In Regulating Thermogenic Program In Brown Adipose Tissue, Chengrui Qiu Jan 2025

Exploring The Role Of Cyclin D1 In Regulating Thermogenic Program In Brown Adipose Tissue, Chengrui Qiu

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Scholarship

Adipose tissue plays a multifaceted role in regulating metabolic health and contributing to the pathophysiology of various diseases. Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT), a vital organ that senses different environment cues such as cold stress and diet and then undergoes non-shivering thermogenesis in mammalian animals, enhancing energy expenditure to combat obesity. In our recent published study, we found that the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway exhibits doubleedge effects in regulating thermogenic function, with opposite role in BAT and white adipose tissue (WAT). To further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the dual role of mTORC1 in thermogenic regulation, …

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil Jan 2025

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil

Linguistics ETDs

Hirrel (2018) examines form-meaning mappings between speech and co-articulated cyclic gestures, identifying meanings associated with such gestures. To test replicability, this thesis analyzes two functional-semantic domains: modification (adverbs, quantifiers) and morphosyntactic constructions (complex sentences, English Progressive) and their relationship to cyclic gestures. About 12 hours of video was coded in ELAN for cyclic gestures (n=586) and analyzed textually for speech instances (n=1919) of target constructions. Contrary to Hirrel’s predictions, cyclic gestures were not more commonly co-articulated with adverbs than quantifiers and were also not more commonly co-articulated with complex sentences than the English Progressive Construction. Neither pattern reached statistical significance …

Caste-Ing And Recasting Race In Equal Protection Jurisprudence, Vinay Harpalani, Magdalene Bernier Jan 2025

Caste-Ing And Recasting Race In Equal Protection Jurisprudence, Vinay Harpalani, Magdalene Bernier

Faculty Scholarship

In this Essay, we analyze how the concept of "caste" has influenced the U.S. Supreme Court's race-based equal protection jurisprudence. Even before the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment, advocates such as Charles Sumner appealed to caste analogies to argue for rights for Black Americans. The "stigma of caste" a prominent harm of Jim Crow laws was rejected by the majority in Plessy v. Ferguson but articulated in Justice Harlan's Plessy dissent. The notion of caste also undergirded the origin of strict scrutiny and the ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. However, Brown defined the harm ofschool segregation not …

2025 Environmental Flows Report, Adrian Oglesby, Anjali Bean, Martha Cooper, David Pílz

Publications

A selection from the 2025 Environmental Flows Workshop Report's Introduction:

The term environmental flows means different things to different people. For example, environmental flows might refer to the science underpinning instream flow recommendations; or environmental flows might refer to the tools used to legally allocate water to rivers; or it might most broadly refer to the question, “how much water does a river need to stay alive?” Workshop presentations and discussions covered all these topics and others.

A New Simulation Framework For Analyzing Neutrosophic Data In Experimental Design, Muhammad Aslam, Nasrullah Khan, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2025

A New Simulation Framework For Analyzing Neutrosophic Data In Experimental Design, Muhammad Aslam, Nasrullah Khan, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

A recent simulation-based classical analysis has been developed for interval data. However, a review of the literature indicates that these existing simulations have notable limitations and fail to conform to the neutrosophic statistical framework. In this paper, we propose a novel simulation process designed to analyze neutrosophic data within an appropriate and rigorous neutrosophic framework. We demonstrate that the proposed simulation is more comprehensive and aligns closely with the principles of neutrosophic theory. The results will be obtained through simulation and compared with those of existing methods, with the expectation that the proposed approach provides substantial improvements and is better …

Introducing The University Of New Mexico 12-Level Functional Scale: A Novel Approach For Assessing Functional Recovery In Orthopaedic Trauma Patients, Devin A. Maez, Rick J. Gehlert, Thomas A. Decoster

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Activity Scale and other common activity scales are primarily used for patients undergoing joint reconstructive surgery. However, no such scale exists for musculoskeletal trauma patients. The authors propose The University of New Mexico (UNM) 12-Level Functional Activity Scale to address this gap in assessing functional activity and managing postoperative care for orthopaedic trauma patients. A comprehensive review of existing scales led to the development of the UNM Scale, emphasizing simplicity, objectivity, and potential benefits in patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration. The UNM Scale provides a structured approach to assess and monitor functional …

When Emotions Flare: Solar Rhythms, Emotions And Cycles Of Political Revolution, Andreas Hernandez, Carolina Zilli Vieira, Alexandra Smith, Rebecca Olson

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Revolutions are among the most transformative events in human history. Analyzing 395 revolutionary episodes from 1900 to 2014, we find that major waves cluster around solar maxima - periods of intensified geomagnetic activity. Drawing on biomedical research linking geomagnetic disturbances to cardiovascular and stress regulation, and thus to emotional states, we propose that solar cycles modulate the affective ecologies within which revolutions arise. Solar activity may accelerate, shape, and amplify revolutionary cycles by heightening emotional climates and tipping fragile systems toward mass mobilization. This reframes revolutions as planetary events - entanglements of political conflict, embodied emotion, and cosmic …

Uncertain Labeling Graphs And Uncertain Graph Classes (With Survey For Various Uncertain Sets), Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2025

Uncertain Labeling Graphs And Uncertain Graph Classes (With Survey For Various Uncertain Sets), Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Graph theory, a branch of mathematics, studies the relationships between entities using vertices and edges. Uncertain Graph Theory has emerged within this field to model the uncertainties present in real-world networks. Graph labeling involves assigning labels, typically integers, to the vertices or edges of a graph according to specific rules or constraints. This paper introduces the concept of the Turiyam Neutrosophic Labeling Graph, which extends the traditional graph framework by incorporating four membership values—truth, indeterminacy, falsity, and a liberal state—at each vertex and edge. This approach enables a more nuanced representation of complex relationships. Additionally, we discuss the Single-Valued Pentapartitioned …

Some Types Of Hyperneutrosophic Set (1): Bipolar, Pythagorean, Double-Valued, Interval-Valued Set, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2025

Some Types Of Hyperneutrosophic Set (1): Bipolar, Pythagorean, Double-Valued, Interval-Valued Set, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Neutrosophic Set is a mathematical framework designed to manage uncertainty, characterized by three membership functions: truth (T), indeterminacy (I), and falsity (F). In recent years, extensions such as the Hyperneutrosophic Set and SuperHyperneutrosophic Set have been introduced to address more complex scenarios. This paper proposes new concepts by extending Bipolar Neutrosophic Sets, Interval-Valued Neutrosophic Sets, Pythagorean Neutrosophic Sets, and Double-Valued Neutrosophic Sets using the frameworks of Hyperneutrosophic and SuperHyperneutrosophic Sets. Additionally, a brief analysis of these extended concepts is presented.

Exploring Concepts Of Hyperfuzzy, Hyperneutrosophic, And Hyperplithogenic Sets (I), Florentin Smarandache, Takaaki Fujita

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This work investigates the evolution of traditional set theory to address complex and ambiguous real-world phenomena. It introduces hierarchical hyperstructures and superhyperstructures, where superhyperstructures are formed by iteratively applying power sets to create nested abstractions. The focus is placed on three foundational set-based frameworks—Fuzzy Sets, Neutrosophic Sets, and Plithogenic Sets and their extensions into Hyperfuzzy Sets, HyperNeutrosophic Sets, and Hyperplithogenic Sets. These extensions are applied to various domains, including Statistics, TOPSIS, K-means Clustering, Evolutionary Theory, Topological Spaces, Decision Making, Probability, and Language Theory. By exploring these generalized forms, this paper seeks to guide and inspire further research and development in …

Symbolic Hyperplithogenic Set, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Concepts such as Fuzzy Sets, Neutrosophic Sets, and Plithogenic Sets have been widely investigated for tackling uncertainty, with numerous applications explored across various domains. As extensions of the Plithogenic Set, the HyperPlithogenic Set and the SuperHyperPlithogenic Set are also recognized. A Symbolic Plithogenic Set (SPS) is a structured set defined by symbolic components 𝑃𝑖 and coefficients 𝑎𝑖 , enabling flexible algebraic operations under a specified prevalence order. In this paper, we examine concepts including the Symbolic HyperPlithogenic Set and the Symbolic 𝑛-SuperhyperPlithogenic Set.

Some Types Of Hyperneutrosophic Set (7): Type-M, Nonstationary, Subset-Valued, And Complex Refined, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper builds upon the foundational advancements introduced in [26,39–43]. TheNeutrosophic Set provides a versatile mathematical framework for addressing uncertainty through its three membership functions: truth, indeterminacy, and falsity [84]. Extensions such as the Hyperneutrosophic Set and the SuperHyperneutrosophic Set have been recently proposed to address increasingly complex and multidimensional problems. Detailed formal definitions of these concepts can be found in [33]. In this paper, we extend the Type-𝑚, Nonstationary, Subset-Valued, and Complex Refined Neutrosophic Sets using the Hyperneutrosophic Set and the SuperHyperneutrosophic Set frameworks.

Significado Neutrosófico: Partes Comunes De Cosas Poco Comunes Y Partes Poco Comunes De Cosas Comunes, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
