The Indian lives close to nature and utilizes the plants which grow about him, and these uses differ among various tribes. In order therefore to understand the ethnobotany of any group of Indians it is necessary to know something of their history, customs, mythology, religion and medicine. Hence in treating the ethnobotany of the Acoma and Laguna Indians the above phases of their culture will be discussed as they relate to these two pueblos.

Within the past thirty years much has been done by the New Mexico Game and Fish Commission for the protection and increase of Game. Market hunting is a thing of the past, as we have controlled seasons and bag limits. Species have been maintained and increased by establishing refuges and in some cases species reestablished by transplanting.

This investigation was made for the purpose of determining what has been accomplished in the past in the study of ethnobiology of the southwest Indians. Much of this has been produced as incidental to the archaeology of the region, and some as definite biological problems. Also isolated pieces of work have been done with the different Indian peoples and with varying phases of their ethnobiology. It is therefore proposed to organize and correlate this great mass of ethnobiological literature into a plan which (1 ) includes the entire region and (2) considers the various phases of the culture through which …
