The Status Of Anthropology In Chile, Donald Brand
New Mexico Anthropologist
Chile recognizes the existence of Anthropology, but has no formally trained anthropologists, and has no chairs or departments of Anthropology. Due to the existence of archaeologic material pertaining to a number of the higher middle American cultures in northern Chile, and the existence of aboriginal populations in Araucania and Fuegia, both Chileans and foreigners have long carried on desultory investigations in archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, and physical anthropology. This work has been highly sporadic in time, spotted in areal distribution, and uneven in quantity, quality, and content subject.

Among the earliest problems which interested the physiological chemist was that of the possibility of an interconversion of the major types of food-stuffs. That this conversion actually does take place in the case of carbohydrates changing to fats has been apparent, ever since Man began to fatten his domestic animals on a starchy diet. However, interconversion of the other types, such as that of fats to carbohydrates and proteins, or carbohydrates to proteins, and of proteins to carbohydrates and fats, is not so obvious, and even now, after many years of experimentation, the answer to the question is far from …

The Early Basis Of Subsistence Of Indians In The Plains Area, Joe D. Reed

The fundamental purpose of this paper is to present the picture of early food economy among the Indians of the Plains. In order to accomplish this task the procedure has been to present: (1) a brief study of the tribal groups with special emphasis upon their early history and movements, followed by (2) a general picture of Plains food economy with regard to the sequence and tribal units. The important subjects within this second category have to do with buffalo utilization, agriculture and the gathering to wild plant food; (3) a listing of the various wild plant and animal foods …
