The Analysis Of Seed Oils Of Six Tropical Plant Species By Gas Chromatography, Justin C. Hamer
The Analysis Of Seed Oils Of Six Tropical Plant Species By Gas Chromatography, Justin C. Hamer
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Several factors influenced the choice of tropical plant seeds studied in this research. Among these factors were: (1) an early interest in the chemistry of natural products; (2) the legends surrounding the use of certain plants by native herb "doctors," and (3) the ready availability of the materials at the beginning of this investigation, which was started in Cuba.
A Floristic Study Of The Basidiomycetes Of The Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Horace R. Simms
A Floristic Study Of The Basidiomycetes Of The Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Horace R. Simms
Biology ETDs
The basidiomycete flora of the Sandia Mountains has never really been investigated before. At best this survey can serve only as a rather spotty general sketch of fungi in the area. But at least it is a beginning, and one which is not slanted just at the pathological aspects. It is my hope that such information as has been uncovered will help in future ecological and taxonomic investigations of the fungi of these mountains.
A Spectroscopic Study Of Some Rare Earth Complexes, Richard M. Alire
A Spectroscopic Study Of Some Rare Earth Complexes, Richard M. Alire
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The phenomenon of intramolecular energy transfer was studied using anthranilate, 8-hydroxyquinolate, 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinolate, and salicylaldehyde rare earth chelates. Line emission characteristic of the rare earth ion was observed whenever the lowest triplet (measured) of the complex was higher in energy than the emitting (resonance) level of the rare earth trivalent ion. The path of energy transfer from the organic portion of the chelate to the rare earth ion was verified as going via the lowest or a nearby triplet state of the complex. Relative quantum yield measurements were made on the anthranilate rare earth series using a photographic method. Gadolinium anthranilate …

A Comparison Of Intestinal Protozoa Among Peromyscus And Other Small Rodents Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Raymond C. Bowen
Biology ETDs
The purpose of this investigation is to study the intestinal protozoans in three species of deermice, Peromyscus boylei, F. leucopus, and P. maniculatus, and to compare the protozoans with those in several other small rodents found in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
Vegetation, Pollen Rain, And Pollen Preservation, Sangre De Cristo Mountains, New Mexico, Hobart N. Dixon
Vegetation, Pollen Rain, And Pollen Preservation, Sangre De Cristo Mountains, New Mexico, Hobart N. Dixon
Biology ETDs
In this investigation I shall attempt to relate pollen percentages of recent sediments to relative phytosociological measures of the vegetation in each of six southwestern vegetational types. The establishment of such relationships will enable more accurate reconstructions of past plant associations and climate from studies of pollen profiles
Age And Growth Of The Longfin Dace, Agosia Chrysogaster Girard, John Kristian Winther
Age And Growth Of The Longfin Dace, Agosia Chrysogaster Girard, John Kristian Winther
Biology ETDs
This is the first study to determine the age and growth of the longfin dace, Agosia chrsogaster Girard. During March, June, and October, 1961, 8,568 dace were collected from the Mimbres, San Francisco River and one of the Mimbres River indicate that Agosia lives just over one year. Estimates of age based on the examination of scales from a stratified subsample of 255 fish appear to agree with length-frequency estimates. The position of a check near the outer margin of scales established the formation of a winter check in March. Two or more checks appear to be formed each year. …
The Flora Of Mount Taylor, Neal L. Osborn
The Flora Of Mount Taylor, Neal L. Osborn
Biology ETDs
The writer has attempted to determine what species occur on Mount Taylor. This information should reveal any deviations from the expected floristic pattern as well as general distributional trends. If deviations are detected, the writer will attempt to explain them in the general discussion. Most of the answers and conclusions are of a speculative nature because of insufficient meteorologic information and comparative data from other regions.
The Physical Anthropology Of Pottery Mound: A Pueblo Iv Site In West Central New Mexico, Russell Lowell Gordon Schorsch
The Physical Anthropology Of Pottery Mound: A Pueblo Iv Site In West Central New Mexico, Russell Lowell Gordon Schorsch
Anthropology ETDs
The thesis presents the anthropometric data on 110 skeletons obtained by the University of New Mexico from Pueblo IV site of Pottery Mound. The measurements include 27 dimensions and 11 indices of the skull, face, and long bones of all or part of the 49 individuals. Observations on pathologist of the bones and teeth are also discussed. These data are compared with similar material from the Pueblo IV sites of Paako, Pecos, and Hawikuh. The Pottery Mound materials, although of a general Southwestern physical type, are somewhat divergent from other Pueblo IV groups.Several possible causes for the divergencies are postulated, …

An Annotated Checklist Of The Bats Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Frances Veronica Sheppard
An Annotated Checklist Of The Bats Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Frances Veronica Sheppard
Biology ETDs
In 1960-61, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, was surveyed for bats. The purpose of this survey was to determine what kinds of bats occur in the county and to collect natural history data on these bats. Bats were obtained by cave and roost searching and by mist-netting and shooting over ponds, streams, and tanks. For all bats collected, standard museum study skins and skulls as well as alcoholic carcasses are preserved in the Museum of Southwestern Biology at the University of New Mexico.
Rapid Identification Of Streptococcal Infections Using Fluorescent Antibody Techniques, James H. Meadows
Rapid Identification Of Streptococcal Infections Using Fluorescent Antibody Techniques, James H. Meadows
Biology ETDs
The use of fluorescent microscopy coupled with immunological techniques offer new methods for the demonstration of antigen-antibody reactions. The adaptation of these techniques to grouping of beta hemolytic streptococci makes feasible their further adaptation toward identification of group A streptococci in clinical material. Commercially available labeled antibodies against group A beta hemolytic streptococci were obtained for use in this study. A method for the determination of labeled antisera specificity is proposed and a technique for absorbing out any heterologous reacting antibody is described. Using this commercial labeled antisera, subsequent to specificity studies plus absorption if necessary, adaptations of basic fluorescent …

High Temperature Vaporization Behavior And Thermodynamic Properties Of Hafnium Diboride, Milton C. Krupka
High Temperature Vaporization Behavior And Thermodynamic Properties Of Hafnium Diboride, Milton C. Krupka
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Vaporization of hafnium diboride has been studied in a tungsten effusion cell over the temperature range 2175°K. to 2500°K. A low-melting eutectic at 2520°K. prevented the use of the effusion cell technique at higher temperatures. An ultra-high vacuum apparatus, capable of producing vacuums of the order of 1 x 10-12 atm. or better and within which the final series of vapor pressure measurements was made, was designed and constructed during the course of this study. The effect of a high background pressure in producing species more volatile than the ones under investigation was considered to have been reduced to …
The Kinetics Of The Exchange Of Chlorine Atoms Between Hydrogen Chloride And Benzyl Chlorides, Warren Bruce
The Kinetics Of The Exchange Of Chlorine Atoms Between Hydrogen Chloride And Benzyl Chlorides, Warren Bruce
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The study of the rates of chemical reactions in solutions has received a great deal of attention, primarily because of the relative ease with which such investigations can be persued; however, the great number of publications can never obscure the truth that a rigorous treatment of molecular processes in solutions is not available. The approach to the problem has been through extensions of theories which have their origins in descriptions of gaseous systems, and, with few exceptions, these extensions are firmly grounded on the techniques of classical thermodynamics. Hopefully, future advances in the calculation of the partition functions of molecules …

A Study Of Body Water In Active And Hibernating Ground Squirrels, Citellus Lateralis Lateralis And Citellus Spilosoma Marginatus, Lawrence R. Klinestiver
A Study Of Body Water In Active And Hibernating Ground Squirrels, Citellus Lateralis Lateralis And Citellus Spilosoma Marginatus, Lawrence R. Klinestiver
Biology ETDs
The present studies were designed to evaluate dehydration as a factor in determining duration of hibernation. Skin temperatures were utilized to indicate the condition of hibernation. Two species of animals, Citellus lateralis and Citellus spilosoma, from two different ecological areas, were studied for the purpose of determining whether tolerance for deprivation of water would indicate changes in water content of tissues during hibernation. If hibernation is limited by dehydration of body tissues, then animals with a greater tolerance for dehydration may hibernate for longer periods. The following experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of dehydration on active and …
