Biology ETDs
Pour species of desert rodents were studied 1n the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico in an effort to detect the factor or factors excluding each one from areas north of their ranges. Their distributions were analyzed in relation to climate, vegetation, soil texture, and biotic competition.
The cactus mouse (Peromyscus eremicus) and rock pocket mouse (Perognathus intermedius} seem to be limited by temperature. Each is saxicolous and inhabits rocky outcrops as far north as certain isotherms for average annual maximal temperature, these being 71 F for£. eremicus and 69 F for~. intermedius. Occasionally the former inhabits nonrocky sites, but …

Sporicidal Efficiency Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide, Various Disinfectants, And Their Combinations For Four Strains Of Bacillus, William L. Lappenbusch
Biology ETDs
This study was concerned with the sporicidal efficiency of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), various disinfectants, and their combinations or complexes. Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger (globigii), Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis (5230), and Bacillus stearothermophiluswere used to demonstrate the sporicidal activity of DMSO, phenol, Clorox, phenylmercuric nitrate, silver nitrate, Roccal, merthiolate, and iodine. Dimethyl sulfoxide has been shown in the past to enhance the penetration of neighboring substances which it encounters whether it be by the formation of a complex or by a reservoir effect in which DMSO causes a change in the osmotic concentrations on either side of a semipermeable …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
There are many examples of nitro-substituted aromatic compounds, and of these the compounds in the benzene series have been most extensively studied. Nitro groups attached to an aromatic ring vary in reactivity toward nucleophilic displacement. For example, when two nitro groups are ortho or para to each other, one may be substituted with varying ease depending on the other substituents present. Nitro groups which are meta to one another are generally not subject to nucleophilic displacement. The mobility or ease of displacement of a nitro group by a nucleophile may be increased by introduction of other groups into the ring, …

The Cleavage Of Diborane By Tetra (Dimethylamino)Diboron And The Preparation Of Some Dihale (1, 10-Phenanthroline)Boron(Iii) Cations, Jack D. Cummins
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Boron hydrides were first described and characterized by Stock (1). His early work has led to the proposal of about twenty new, distinctly identifiable hydrides (2). Of the proposed hydrides, it has been established that diborane-6 (B2H6), tetraborane-10 (B4H10), and nonaborane-15 (B9H15) contain bridged BH2 groups in the boron hydride framework (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). The proposed structures for these compounds is shown in fig. 1 (2,10).
Isolation, Identification And Antibiotic Sensitivity Of Enteric Obligate Anaerobes In Cases Of Gastro-Enteritis, Gordon E. Newlin
Isolation, Identification And Antibiotic Sensitivity Of Enteric Obligate Anaerobes In Cases Of Gastro-Enteritis, Gordon E. Newlin
Biology ETDs
Organisms capable of living in the absence of atmospheric oxygen were first described in 1861. However, it was not until almost forty years later that anaerobes were discovered to be associated with the human body. From 1900 until the present, most work with anaerobes concerned media and methods to promote the growth of these organisms. Their classification has been attempted, but their taxonomy still remains in a state of confusion. Rarely, and only in rather obvious cases, has the pathogenicity of these organisms been investigated. Consequently, these organisms and their relationship to pathogenicity remain relatively unknown to bacteriologists today.

Annual Report Of The University, 1965-1966, University Of New Mexico
UNM Annual Reports
The annua1 report of the University of New Mexico for the year 1966 is devoted principally to the discussion of a problem which we believe deserves the attention of everyone with more than average concern for the affairs of our state. This problem is caused by the rapid Space Age evolution of the national economy-an evolution which has produced an extraordinary new demand for education at the graduate level and simultaneously has made the centers of such advanced education both magnets for, and producers of, our new technical and scientific industries. It also has brought exciting changes in the development …

Liquid Scintillators. The Stability Of Organic Scintillator Solutes Toward Ultra-Violet Radiation. The Photooxidation Of 2, 5-Diphenyloxazole, Harold A. Mackay
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
An insight has been gained concerning the stability of organic scintillator solutes in toluene on exposure to ultraviolet light while in the presence of oxygen and water. Oxygen and water, from either solute or solvent, not only function as quenchers but may continue to react with the solute molecule via a photooxidation process. Removal of these materials from the 2, 5-diphenyloxazole toluene system resulted in a marked improvement in stability of the system on exposure to ultraviolet light. The choice of scintillator solute, in addition to water and oxygen, and the time of ultraviolet irradiation, has a pronounced effect on …

Polarographic Investigation Of Several Tetrakis 1, 3-Diketone Europium Chelates In Acetonitrile, Samuel Lee Jeanjaquet
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
This study is concerned with the polarographic behavior of several tetrakis 1, 3-diketone chelates of europium and of the 1, 3-diketone ligands in acetonitrile. Such a study should reveal the following: (a) whether the europium (III) in the complexes is reduced directly to the metal, or if reduction to europium (II) takes place followed by reduction to the metal; (b) whether ligands are released during the reduction step(s) and if so, how many; (c) whether the polarographic behavior is such that dissociation constants of the complexes or complex ions can be determined by measuring the shift in half-wave potential as …
Breeding Birds Of The Sandia Mountains, John L. Tatschl
Breeding Birds Of The Sandia Mountains, John L. Tatschl
Biology ETDs
A field study was conducted during the summer and winter months of 1964 and 1965 to determine what birds breed and winter in the Sandia Mountains. Study plots were established in eight different plant communities from 10,600 feet in spruce-fir to 6,350 feet in Embudo Canyon. Of the 154 species noted, 89 were found to breed in the Sandias. Permanent residents, arrival and departure dates, total numbers of breeding pairs per 100 acres per plant community, and nests were recorded. Biomass was recorded for each species and each community. The occurrence in flocks, pairs, or singly and the beginning and …
Va Survey Of Intestinal Helminths Occurring In Dogs From Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ronald P. Hathaway
Va Survey Of Intestinal Helminths Occurring In Dogs From Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ronald P. Hathaway
Biology ETDs
In recent years there have appeared numerous publications dealing with intestinal helminth of dogs and the relationships of these helminths to public health. Although several species of helminths that normally infect dogs recently have be found to infect humans, most of these parasites are unable to complete their life cycles in man and are destined to wander aimlessly through tissues, bringing about a condition known as visceral larva migrans. The importance of such helminths as Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma canium in relation to human disease has been pointed out by Beaver et al. (1952) and Beaver (1956, 1959).

A Comparative Floristic Study Of Mount Taylor And Redondo Peak, New Mexico, Neal L. Osborn
A Comparative Floristic Study Of Mount Taylor And Redondo Peak, New Mexico, Neal L. Osborn
Biology ETDs
For several years, there has been an intensified interest and activity in floristic studies of various areas in New Mexico, especially of certain well-isolated mountain masses characteristic of many mountainous areas in New Mexico. Many of these mountain masses are, in effect, islands of Montane Biota separated from other islands by lower and drier mesa and valley barriers. Botanists realize a need to investigate thoroughly the floras of these areas with one another to reveal possible modifications in flora composition or species differences that may have arisen as a result of geographic isolation and subsequent changes in gene frequencies.
