Thermodynamics Of Proton Ionization In Dilute Aqueous Solution At 25°, Ernest J. Baca Jr. Oct 1969

Thermodynamics Of Proton Ionization In Dilute Aqueous Solution At 25°, Ernest J. Baca Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

This dissertation consists of four studies and is divided into five parts. Part I contains a description of the calculations and equipment used for these four studies.

Part II is a study of tris(hydroxymethyl)nminomethane (THAM) for use as a standard in solution calorimetry. The heat of solution of THAM in 0.100 M HCL was determined at 25°.

Part III is a study of the thermodynamics of proton ionization

from some unsaturated, five membered, nitrogen ring compounds in dilute aqueous solution at 25°. Values of deltaK, pK and deltaS are reported for 1,2,3-triazole, benzotriazole, 4,5-dibromo-1,2,3-triazole, 1-phenyl- 5-methyl-1, 2, 3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid, …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Complexes Of Rhodium (Iii) And Iridium (Iii), Dean H. W. Carstens Sep 1969

Spectroscopic Studies Of Complexes Of Rhodium (Iii) And Iridium (Iii), Dean H. W. Carstens

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of complex compounds of two d6 transition metal ions, rhodium(III) and iridium(III), was made to characterize the electronic transitions responsible for the various bands seen in the absorption and emission spectra and to determine the dependence of the energies of the excited states of a complex ion on the nature of the ligands and the central metal ion. All the complex compounds contained organic ligands—pyridine, 2,2’-bipyridine, or l,l0-phenanthroline—in the principal coordination sphere. Most also had halide ions bonded directly to the central ion. An ancillary study was made of 2,2’,2’’-terpyridine complexes of two d10 …

Discrimination Reversal Learning As An Index Of Memory In Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus, Waneta Kay Coester Aug 1969

Discrimination Reversal Learning As An Index Of Memory In Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus, Waneta Kay Coester

Biology ETDs

Spermophilus tridecemlineatus were trained to solve a simple visual discrimination problem. Following a 15-day non-training period the ground squirrels were trained on-a series of five discrimination reversal problems. Criterion and non-correction procedures were followed during original and reversal training. During the non-training period one half of the subjects (Group I) remained in the training laboratory and the remainder of the animals (Group II) hibernated.

It was possible to train the animals to solve the original discrimination and the reversal problems. No statistically significant differences were observed between performances on consecutive problems. However, differences approaching statistical significance were observed between performances …

Migration Into San Juan Indian Pueblo, 1726-1968, Shirley Hill Witt Aug 1969

Migration Into San Juan Indian Pueblo, 1726-1968, Shirley Hill Witt

Anthropology ETDs

Ethnographic literature and popular opinion conjoin in the belief that American Pueblo Indians reside in endogamous communities. Since one pueblo community is part of our population under study, it behooves us to assess its genic relation to the wider population of the Chama Valley-San Juan Jurisdiction area. If it is endogamous, then, of course, it is a genetic isolate and, as such, contributes nothing on the biological level to the outside population. If, on the other hand, the pueblo is exogamous, we need to know how and what is transferred both to the outside population and from the outside population …

The Food Habits Of The Gila Mountain-Sucker, Pantosteus Clarki (Baird And Girard), Gail C. Kobetich Jul 1969

The Food Habits Of The Gila Mountain-Sucker, Pantosteus Clarki (Baird And Girard), Gail C. Kobetich

Biology ETDs

Intestinal contents of postlarval to adult Gila mountain-suckers, Pantosteus clarki (Baird and Girard), collected from the upper Gila River system, were examined using a slightly modified Sedgewick-Rafter counting technique. From the analysis of the intestinal material it was found that the diet of Pantosteus clarki consisted of 97.4% plant material, 2.4% animal material, and 0.2% organic detritus. In order of importance the plant material consisted of filamentous green algae, filamentous blue-green algae, and diatoms. The animal material consisted of aquatic invertebrates with the following groups being most important: Tendipedidae, Epherneroptera, Simuliidae, and Pyralididae. Other algal types and invertebrates groups occurred …
