Optimal Foraging: A Selective Review Of Theory And Tests, G.H. Pyke, H.R. Pulliam, Eric Charnov
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Beginning with Emlen (1966) and MacArthur and Pianka (1966) and extending through the last ten years, several authors have sought to predict the foraging behavior of animals by menas of mathematical models. These models are very similar, in that they all assume that the fitness of a foraging animal is a function of the efficiency of foraging measured in terms of some "currency" (Schoener, 1971) - usually energy - and that natural selection has resulted in animals that forage so as to maximize this fitness. As a result of these similarities, the models have become known as "optimal foraging models"; …
The Deconvolution Analysis Of The Radiohippurate Renogram, Conrad Robert Appledorn Jr.
The Deconvolution Analysis Of The Radiohippurate Renogram, Conrad Robert Appledorn Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The evaluation of kidney function is a necessary procedure in assessing the extent of renal disease in today's population. In particular, this assessment should include measurements of the patient's plasma flow into and urine flow from each kidney. Changes in either measurement from accepted normal ranges indicate the presence of a disease process.
The combination of radioactive tracer methods with data analysis using models describing biological kinetics has demonstrated the potential of large computers in the assessment of renal function. However, the requirement for sophiticated computer resources has limited the widespread application these techniques might otherwise receive. This work investigates …
Relation Of Flotation Analysis To Archeological Excavations, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Mary B. Struever
Relation Of Flotation Analysis To Archeological Excavations, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Mary B. Struever
Biology ETDs
Flotation analysis (the examination of small-scale botanical remains recovered by a simple water separation technique) was undertaken at site 29SJ627, a small pueblo in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Altogether 69 samples were examined, yielding 5208 seeds from approximately 30 plant taxa. All plant taxa encountered in flotation samples are growing in Chaco today, with the exception of the domesticates corn and squash, and the riparian Scirpus (bulrush). The assemblage of seed types recovered by flotation indicates that the prehistoric plant community was essentially similar to today's, with increased emphasis on arboreal and riparian species and that weedy types were more …
Floristic Affinities Of Animas Mountain, Southwestern New Mexico, Warren L. Wagner
Floristic Affinities Of Animas Mountain, Southwestern New Mexico, Warren L. Wagner
Biology ETDs
Animas Mountain of southwestern New Mexico was selected for a floristic inventory and analysis because of the lack of previous study in this unique portion of the Southwest.
An annotated checklist of the vascular flora of the study area was compiled. A species-rich flora represented by 718 taxa (ca. 20% of the known flora of New Mexico) was documented by either (i) herbarium specimens from the University of New Mexico, or New Mexico State University herbaria, or (ii) specimens collected during the 1975 and 1976 growing seasons.
Floristic assemblages were recognized based upon descriptive field notes, species lists from collection …
A Multivariate Study Of The Family Molossidae (Mammalia, Chiroptera): Morphology, Ecology, Evolution, Patricia Waring Freeman
A Multivariate Study Of The Family Molossidae (Mammalia, Chiroptera): Morphology, Ecology, Evolution, Patricia Waring Freeman
Biology ETDs
The Molossidae is a worldwide, mostly tropical family of bats. This analysis examines what phenetically similar groups occur within the family; what ecological role species of molossids may have; and, finally, what kind of evolutionary relationships exist among phenetically similar species.
Seventy-six characters were taken on each of eighty species of molossids and analyzed by principal components, distance (size-in and size-out), and correlation analyses from the NT-SYS package of multivariate statistical programs. Phenetically similar bats are grouped and described morphologically. Morphological trends which are revealed by the principal components analysis are used to make ecological predictions about the bats' feeding …
Laboratory Diagnosis Of Genital Infections Associated With Chlamydia Trachomatis: Cell Culture And Serological Methods, Linda L. Cole
Laboratory Diagnosis Of Genital Infections Associated With Chlamydia Trachomatis: Cell Culture And Serological Methods, Linda L. Cole
Biology ETDs
Recent investigations have revealed the widespread involvement of Chlamydia trachomatis in nongonococcal genital infections in man. In an effort to develop the necessary methodology for isolating this agent, several different cell culture techniques were evaluated.
Additionally, a fluorescent antibody technique and neutralization test were developed for possible diagnostic use.
Quantitation of Chlamydia in cell culture was accomplished using inclusion counts which showed linear dose response curves. Inclusions were stained by the PAS, iodine, and Giemsa methods, and these stains were found to be equal in their sensitivity in detecting chlamydia inclusions. Using inclusion counts as a quantitative assay, a variety …

Charge Transfer Photochemistry Of Some Chromium (Iii) Complexes, Yohn Sik Kang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The photolyses of a series of chromium(III) complexes Cr(en)3 3+, Cr(den)2 3+, Cr(tn)3 3+, and Cr(pn)3 3+, where en= ethylenediamine, den= diethylenetriamine, tn = trimethylenediamine, and pn = propylenediamine, have been investigated. Experiments were carried out on unbuffered and buffered (pH= 2.00) solutions containing 10^-3 – 10^-2 M chromium(III) complexes at room temperature and 10°C. While purging with argon or oxygen, the irradiation was performed with 184.9-253.7 nm u.v. light, corresponding to the charge transfer bands of the complex.

Community Structure Of Ten Southwestern Rodent Faunas, Terrence Morgan May
Community Structure Of Ten Southwestern Rodent Faunas, Terrence Morgan May
Biology ETDs
Thirty morphological characters were measured for each of 63 rodent species. All characters were standardized to a mean of zero (O) and standard deviation equal to one (1). From this assemblage, subsets were chosen to represent ten (10) naturally occurring rodent communities of New Mexico and Arizona. Numerical taxonomy techniques of distance, correlation and principal components analysis were used to analyze the data.
Results reveal three distinct community 'types'. The presence or absence of morphologically divergent species is responsible for these differences. The appearance of Castor canadensis (the most morpho-logically divergent species) is dependent upon the addition of a new …

Chromium(Iii) Tartrates, Gerald Lynn Robbins
Chromium(Iii) Tartrates, Gerald Lynn Robbins
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The binuclear tartrate-bridged complexes [Cr2 (tartH)2 (L)2] and Na[Cr2 (tart) (tartH) (L)2]("tart" = C4H2O64-, "tartH" = C4H3O63- and "L"= 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-bipyridyl) have been synthesized where each complex contains either two optically active or two meso bridging ligands. A discussion of the number of isomers and symmetries of these complexes is presented, as well as a complete description of the syntheses of the complexes and their sodium salts. Steric constraints force the octahedral coordination geometry for the dimer containing two …

Theoretical Studies Of Nucleic Acid Sugar Ring Analogs, Ali-Reza Hashemi-Attar
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Extended Hueckel theory (EHT) was used to study analogs of sugar rings in nucleic acid monomers. The energy gradient in a variable metric algorithm was used to find the potential energy along the pseudorotation path. Use of the energy gradient made it possible to permit 34 degrees of freedom in a molecule. Seven molecules and their isomers were studied. These were: 3-hydroxy2-methyl tetrahydrofuran, 2-ami no-4-hydroxytetrahydrofiJran, 5-ami no3-hydroxy-2-methyltetrahydrofuran (deoxyribonucleic acid analog), 3,4-dihydroxy-2-methyltetrahydrofuran, 2-amino-3,4-dihydroxytetrahydrofuran, 2-amino-5-methyltetrahydrofuran, and 2-amino-3,4-dihydroxy-5-methyltetrahydrofuran (ribonucleic acid analog).
It was shown that the difference in sum of total overlap populations (TOP) for all pairs of atoms between two related conformations …
