Annual Report Of The University, 1977-1978, Volumes 1-4, University Of New Mexico
UNM Annual Reports
The University of New Mexico intercollegiate athletic program made a major splash on the national scene in 1977-78 with 13 Lobos earning All-America honors and the UNM basketball team achieving its best finish ever. Additionally, one of the biggest highlights of the school year for New Mexico was the hosting of the 1978 N.C.A.A. Far West Regional Basketball Tournament, March 16 and 18. The two-day tournament, which drew praise on national television from commentators Al McGuire and Dick Enberg, had the best attendance of the four regional tournaments in 1978. The 35,894 who attended the Far West Regional at University …

The Fracture Toughness Of Steel-Aluminum Deformation Welds, Charles Ellis Albright Jr
The Fracture Toughness Of Steel-Aluminum Deformation Welds, Charles Ellis Albright Jr
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
A study of the fracture toughness (in this case, Gic) of steel-aluminum deformation welds using a specially developed double cantilever beam fracture toughness specimen is presented. Welds made at 350C were heat treated at 360, 380, 400, 420 and 440 C.
An intermetallic reaction product layer of Fe2Al5 is formed at the steel-aluminum interface with increasing heat treating temperature and time by a process of nucleation and growth of discrete particles. A transition in toughness from a higher average Gic value (6097 N/m) to a very low average Gic value (525 N/m) is observed. The decrease in toughness is accomplished …
The Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Trans-Stilbene Derivatives, James R. Wilson
The Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Trans-Stilbene Derivatives, James R. Wilson
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
A group of 15 compounds, all structurally related to transstilbene have been studied in systems of electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL). The compounds are substituted 2-phenyl indenes, dihydronapthalenes, and dihydrophenanthrenes. Absorption and fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yield, cyclic voltammetry, and ECL were obtained for each compound. The ECL experiments were set up as single and mixed systems which used tripara-tolylamine as the source of cation radicals. Each mixed system was studied in two different solvents, which were acetonitrile and a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and benzene. Single systems were studied only in the acetonitrile-benzene solution. Emissions at wavelengths longer than the fluorescence …

Vertical Banding And Associated Behavioral Responses Evoked By Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Anesthetized And Free-Swimming Sunfishes, Lepomis Cyanellus And L. Macrochirus, Diana Hoenke Bauer
Vertical Banding And Associated Behavioral Responses Evoked By Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Anesthetized And Free-Swimming Sunfishes, Lepomis Cyanellus And L. Macrochirus, Diana Hoenke Bauer
Biology ETDs
A pattern of dark vertical bands is a characteristic display by Lepomis cyanellus and L. macrochirus. The rapidity with which this display can appear and disappear indicates that it is neurally controlled. This study was carried out in order to identify regions in the brain involved in the control of this color pattern and to determine other behavior patterns associated with electrical stimulation of these regions. Initially, anesthetized fish which were held in a stereotaxic device were stimulated electrically at various sites in the brain to locate regions where vertical banding could be evoked. In subsequent tests, immovable electrodes were …
Chemiluminescence Studies Of Silicon Fluoride And Uranium Oxide, Russell A. Armstrong
Chemiluminescence Studies Of Silicon Fluoride And Uranium Oxide, Russell A. Armstrong
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Spectroscopic studies of the reactions of fluorine with silicon, silane and deuterated silane, and of oxygen with uranium are reported. Chemiluminescence and atomic absorption techniques have been employed to determine the kinetics, photon yields and branching ratios of the chemistry leading to the excited states of the radical SiF. The reaction of silicon vapor with fluorine occurs at nearly a gas kinetic rate (k2=1.3 x 10-10 cc molecule-1 sec-1). The overall system photon yield from the reaction of silane and fluorine to produce SiF(A➔X) and SiF(a➔X) emission were 5 x 10-2% and …

PiñOn Pine Cone Assessment By The Clark's Nutcracker, Nicifraga Columbiana, Donna Christine Cole
PiñOn Pine Cone Assessment By The Clark's Nutcracker, Nicifraga Columbiana, Donna Christine Cole
Biology ETDs
Clark's Nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) rely heavily on seeds of pinon pine (Pinus edulis) as a winter food supply in years of good seed production. During late summer and autumn these birds spend considerable time and energy harvesting seeds from green, unopened cones. I tested abilities of three groups of wild-caught birds to discriminate cone quality: (1) adults, (2) experiences juveniles, and (3) naive juveniles. The birds were given choice tests with two cones, three cones, and cones that had been painted. Under controlled conditions nutcrackers discriminated between cones of differing quality. Adults assessed cones more accurately than did juveniles in …
Inhibition Of Normal Human Eosinophil Chemotaxis By Iga Myeloma Paraproteins, Kathleen J. Reed
Inhibition Of Normal Human Eosinophil Chemotaxis By Iga Myeloma Paraproteins, Kathleen J. Reed
Biology ETDs
Previous studies have been shown that IgA paraproteins suppress human neutrophil chemotaxis. This investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of isolated IgA myeloma component (IgA-MC) on eosinophil chemotaxis. The data presented here indicate that IgA myeloma sera inhibit eosinophil chemotaxis, and demonstrate that the IgA-MC is responsible for this chemotactic inhibitory activity (CIA). Chemotactic inhibition was cell directed and was lost following pepsin digestion or dithiothreitol reduction alkylation of the IgA-MC. Polymeric IgA was shown to be the most effective inhibitor of eosinophil chemotaxis as determined by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration chromatography and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Both isolated …
Physiochemical Studies Of Newly Synthesized Dna During Stable Dna Replication In Escherichia Coli, Mary Sroka-Richardson
Physiochemical Studies Of Newly Synthesized Dna During Stable Dna Replication In Escherichia Coli, Mary Sroka-Richardson
Biology ETDs
The DNA synthesized during stable DNA replication (i.e., DNA replication in the absence of protein synthesis following a period of thymine starvation) was found to be alkali or RNase sensitive. Experiments were performed using both alkaline and neutral cell lysis and gradient sedimentation. Initial results under alkaline conditions revealed much smaller size DNA material than would normally be expected. This data was interpreted to show a reduced rate of DNA chain growth. However, under neutral conditions the DNA material was found to be nearly normal in size. The presence of an alkali-sensitive componant (RNA) was suspected and tested for with …

An Investigation Into The Transport Properties And Kinetic Parameters Of Single Coal Particles During Devolatilization, Gregory Forrest Roach
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
This study focuses on the devolatilization step that occurs in the process of coal gasification. This is a key economic step for both the Lurgi synthetic natural gas process and the in-situ gasification that are being proposed for New Mexican coals. The findings of this study may be used by industry to improve the design and operation of these processes.
The work presented is an investigation into the transport properties and kinetic parameters that govern the extent of pyrolysis for single particles of subbituminous coal from the San Juan Basin in north-west New Mexico. The unique feature of this work …
Nasal Absorption Of Dtpa In Rats And Beagle Dogs, Robert E. Dudley
Nasal Absorption Of Dtpa In Rats And Beagle Dogs, Robert E. Dudley
Biology ETDs
The use of nuclear generated power increases the risk that human accidental exposure to radionuclides will occur. Chelation therapy has been used to remove internally deposited radionuclides primarily by intravenous injection of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). Recently, inhalation of aerosolized DTPA has been shown to be both a convenient and effective means of treatment. Inhalation of aerosolized OTPA through the nose and mouth results in a significant deposition in the nasopharyngeal region of the respiratory tract. This study was designed to determine the fate of OTPA deposited in the nasopharyngeal region of the respiratory tract of rats and Beagle dogs, particularly …

Production Of Canine Macrophage Inhibitory Factor And Its Comparison To Canine Alpha₁-Antitrypsin, Carol Therese Schnizlein
Production Of Canine Macrophage Inhibitory Factor And Its Comparison To Canine Alpha₁-Antitrypsin, Carol Therese Schnizlein
Biology ETDs
Both migration inhibitory factory (MIF) and alpha1-antitrypsin (A1-AT) interact with macrophages. MIF interactions occur during cell-mediated immune responses while A1AT interacts by inhibiting proteolytic enzymes released by macrophages. A comparison of the characteristics of guinea pig MIF and human A1AT in the current literature indicates that both are glycoproteins containing sialic acid with molecular weights of approximately 50,000 daltons. To determine the comparative characteristics of MIF and A1AT, this study partially characterized MIF and A1AT from the dog and evaluated their effect on the in vitro migration of canine pulmonary alveolar macrophages. Canine MIF was produced by stimulating peripheral blood …
Environmental Factors Affecting Natural Succession On Coal Mine Spoils, Jens W. Deichmann
Environmental Factors Affecting Natural Succession On Coal Mine Spoils, Jens W. Deichmann
Biology ETDs
Strip-mining for coal and other mineral resources in the southwestern United States has produced problems in reclamation entirely different from those encountered in regions of higher or more effective precipitation. It was the intent of this study to look at the essentially random assortment of environmental factors left after the mining process and to determine qualitatively, as well as quantitatively, which of those factors are more likely to lead to the successful germination and establishment of invading plant species. A second objective was to determine what changes in the spoil material are occurring as a result of plant establishment.

Desublimation Of Water Vapor At Low Pressure And Evaporative Freezing Of Seawater, Sun Sea Pao
Desublimation Of Water Vapor At Low Pressure And Evaporative Freezing Of Seawater, Sun Sea Pao
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Desublimation and High Pressure Ice-Melting Process has been developed since 1972. In 1976, Mr. T. C. Chung finished a theoretical study of Low Pressure Water Vapor Desublimation Operation. The writer was a co-worker of Mr. Chung, and had worked with him for the study for four months. The information collected in Mr. Chung's thesis was borrowed and edited as Chapters 1 and 2 in the present thesis. Mr. Chung's theory predicts the rate of water vapor desublimation as a function of the difference between operating temperature and desublimer wall temperature. In the present thesis, experimental rates of desublimation …
A Simple, Inexpensive Spinning-Drop Interfacial Tensiometer, Humoud S. Al-Rabiah
A Simple, Inexpensive Spinning-Drop Interfacial Tensiometer, Humoud S. Al-Rabiah
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
A spinning-drop interfacial tensiometer was designed, built, and tested. The device is very simple, inexpensive to build, and easy to operate compared with other spinningdrop tensiometers.
The tensiometer measures the interfacial tension of liquid-liquid or liquid-vapor systems. Interfacial tensions of three systems were measured to test the device: water-heptane, glycerol-heptane, and glycerol-air.
Experimental results agree with literature values within one percent for the glycerol-heptane system. The variations among the values for the liquid-liquid systems at different rotational speeds are within six percent. Repeated experiments with different drop sizes show that drop size of the glycerol-air system may affect the results. …
